An electrical device assembly (120) has a removable signal cable assembly (180). The electrial device assembly (120) includes a circuit substrate (110) which is encapsulated by a device housing (121). The device housing (121) includes two mechanically coupled housing members (130, 140). The housing members (130, 140) are secured together by a retainer (190) mounted to a signal cable (181), that is removably connected to the electrical device assembly (120). Preferably, the housing members (130, 140) have overlapping loop portions (135, 145), and the retainer (190) mounted through the loop portions (135, 145) to secure the housing members (130, 140) together, and to secure the signal cable assembly (180) to the electrical device assembly (120).

A radio housing (101) includes first and second retention mechanisms (216, 218) on both its back and bottom surfaces (104, 106) for selectively retaining a variety of battery form factors and providing a variety of radio configurations.

A unitarily molded seal membrane (310) includes an integral microphone support (304) which includes a diaphragm (306). A cavity wall (406) is located about said diaphragm (306) on one side of the seal membrane (310). The cavity wall (406) defines a cavity area (410) for receiving a microphone (504). The cavity wall aligns the diaphragm (306) in front of the microphone (504), thereby allowing for environmental sealing of the microphone (504).

A rotary control device is provided comprising a light source (22), at least one light receptor (24) radially spaced from the light source (22), a light director (14) having means for directing light from the light source (22) to the receptor (24) and means for rotating the director (14) so that the light director (14) is in a first position when not directing light from the light source (22) to the light receptor (24) and the light director (14) is in a second position when directing light from the light source (22) to the light receptor (24). In another aspect of the invention, the optical rotary device further comprises an isolator (26) made of opaque material which surrounds four sides of the light receptor (24) and four sides of the light source (22). In a further aspect of the invention the light director includes a reflector (46) for directing the light from the light source (22) to the light receptors (24).

Briefly, according to the invention, a compression seal between two surfaces is provided by a body portion (212) conforming between the two surfaces (110 and 130). A first (211) and second (311) rim are connected to a perimeter of the body portion (212). For providing a seal between the two surfaces when the two surfaces are compressed against each other, the second rim is connected to the first rim at an angle (216) between 0 and 180 degrees.

A radio or speaker-microphone unit (10) includes a radio housing (11) and a first (17') or second (17') battery housing. A speaker (33) is disposed in the radio housing (11) and two microphones (34' and 34') are disposed respectively, in the radio housing (11) and in the second battery housing (17'). The battery housings (17' and 17') are selectively attachable with the radio housing (11) to provide a selection between first and second relative positions, with one of the positions providing a handset configuration and the other providing a speaker-microphone configuration. A switch (37) senses which of the battery housings (17', 17') is attached and disables (36) the microphone (34') in the radio housing (11) if the second battery housing (17') is attached.

A multi-position switch (100), comprises an integral integrated circuit (66) for encoding one of a plurality of switch inputs (66) into a combination of a lesser quantity of switch outputs (57) and a miniaturized rotor (15) and stator (60) arrangement for selecting (50) one (62) of the plurality of switch inputs (53) corresponding to a selected switch position.

A portable two-way radio includes a radio portion and a battery removably attached to the radio portion. The radio portion includes an opening that is accessible when the battery is removed. An electronic card is received by the radio portion through the opening. When reassembled, the battery retains the electronic card in the radio portion.

A cable assembly 100 capable of electromagnetic interference suppression a cable strain includes relief 106, a tubular electromagnetic interference suppressor 110 located within the strain relief 106, both of which are disposed around electrical cable 102. The electromagnetic interference suppressor 110 attenuates any electromagnetic interference ('EMI') which might get coupled to electrical cable 102. By attenuating the EMI coupled to electrical cable 102 the problems associated with the electromagnetic interference can be minimized.

A retaining washer (100) prevents the rotation of a D-shaped shaft (106) which is mounted in a round hole (105a) of a housing (105). The retaining washer includes a substantially flat washer (101) having a hole (101a). A tapered tab (102) includes a wide end (102a) and a narrow end (102b). The tab is attached to the flat washer at the wide end such that the tab is substantially perpendicular to the flat washer. A gusset (103) is attached between the tab and the flat washer. The gusset includes a lower edge (103a) which is positioned at an obtuse angle (104) relative to the flat washer. The gusset indents into the housing (105b) and the tab is forced against the flat portion (106b) of the D-shaped shaft. The upper left and right edges of the tab cut into the wall of the housing hole (105c and 105d).

Self-locking, anti-rotational retaining washer for a 'D' shaped shaft

An improved moisture and dust seal assembly is disclosed which is especially suited for application in small hand-held radio apparatus or the like which includes a molded plastic enclosure. A vertical wall is provided on one of the mating members forming the enclosure, such as the cover. The wall has essentially right angle corners and is adapted to receive a standard O-ring thereabout. The assembly is completed by affixing a ribbon-like member, in the form of a closed loop, to the top of the verticle wall. The ribbon-like member extends a predetermined distance beyond the edge of the verticle wall to form a groove-like space for retaining the O-ring. The ribbon-like member may be affixed to the top of the wall by a convenient heat staking operation.
