A bearing element having an adherent score-resistant coating on its surface comprising a carbonized layer of an organic resin in which the layer is carbonized by ion implantation. The ion implantation is controlled to not only provide graphite-like and diamond-like structures in the carbonized coating but to also produce chemical bonding between carbon atoms of the resultant coating and atoms of the bearing surface.

Method of making adherent score-resistant coating for metals

The heavy-duty performance of babbitt-lined, copper-lead based journal bearings is improved by a novel trimetallic barrier layer interposed between the babbitt and copper-lead layers. The trimetallic barrier layer contains the elements nickel, tin and copper in suitable proportions. In a preferred embodiment, the barrier layer consists of layers of nickel, tin and copper metals successively plated over the copper-lead base.

A bearing with or without a backing comprising a sintered porous body formed of a composition containing 1/2 to 6% by weight sulfur, 0 to 60% copper, and the balance iron. The body may be impregnated with a lubricant.

A bearing comprising a steel backing with a porous matrix composition comprising 1/2 to 6 percent by weight sulfur, 0 to 60 percent copper, and the balance iron which is impregnated with babbitt.
