An online printing parameter establishment apparatus is used with a xerographic printing device for printing high quality prints given a target value. The xerographic printing device is capable of producing at least one print control patch on a photoreceptor and is capable of sensing a value of the at least one print control patch. The xerographic printing device has a plurality of sets of inherent performance characteristic values. The online printing parameter establishment apparatus includes a controller device and a switch device. The controller device is operative to produce a first database of different ones of the sensed values. Each sensed value is associated with a respective one of the plurality of sets of inherent performance characteristic values based upon the target value. The controller device is also operative to produce a second database of a plurality of control values. Each one of the control values is extracted from a respective one of the sensed values and the associated set of inherent performance characteristic values. Further, the controller device selects one of the control values which is closely comparable to the target value. A method for online establishment of print control parameters to render high quality prints using a xerographic printing process is also described.

The present invention generally relates to an imaging system, and more specifically, a method and apparatus for accurately predicting toner usage and hence toner dispensing requirements in an imaging system. The toner concentration control system maintains toner concentration in a developer structure, which is connected to a dispenser containing toner. The toner concentration control system includes a toner mass estimator providing a toner mass estimate of the toner mass in the developer structure to be applied to the photoreceptor; a feed forward dispense unit receiving the toner mass estimate and transmitting a feed forward dispense command based on the toner mass estimate; a toner concentration target adjusted by toner age, toner break-in and temperature in the developer structure; a feed back dispense unit receiving the adjusted toner concentration target and transmitting a feedback dispense command; and a total dispense unit receiving the feed forward dispense command and the feedback dispense command, and outputting total dispense command to the dispenser, which dispenses the toner to the developer structure in accordance with the total dispense command.

A multi-color electrophotographic printing machine in which the tangential velocity of the photoconductive drum in the transfer zone is greater than the tangential velocity of the transfer drum having the sheet receiving the transferred images thereon. A buckle is formed in the sheet after the transfer zone, resulting in the sheet being tacked to the developed image on the photoconductive member and moving at the same tangential velocity as the developed image. This is achieved by a transfer sheet having one end secured fixedly over an aperture in the transfer drum. The other end of the transfer sheet is resiliently secured to the transfer drum. The sheet of support material receiving the transferred images is secured at the leading edge to the transfer sheet. In this way, the transfer sheet and the sheet of support material may be induced to form a buckle after the transfer zone enabling the sheet of support material and the developed image to move at the same tangential velocity. By moving at the same tangential velocity, the image smear is eliminated during transfer.

Transfer system

An apparatus in which contaminants are on-the-fly removed from an electrode wire positioned between a donor roller and a photoconductive surface. A magnetic roller is adapted to transport developer material to the donor roller. The electrode wire is electrostatically biased with respect to the donor roller to remove contaminants therefrom. The electrostatic wire bias polarity corresponds with the contaminant charge polarity to repel the contaminants from the wire.

In accordance with the present invention an apparatus is provided for use with a developer container adapted to retain a quantity of developer material, the developer material including varying concentrations of magnetic carrier material and toner material. The toner concentration sensing apparatus comprises a device for generating a magnetic field within the developer container. The apparatus further comprises a device for controlling the generating device to selectively generate the magnetic field within the developer container, wherein a preselected portion of the developer material is compressed by the magnetic field and a signal is generated across the generating device, the signal across the generating device varying as a function of the concentration of the toner.
