Embodiments are directed to optics, light modules with such optics, and methods of assembling such light modules such that the optics are attached and sealed directly to a printed circuit board, thereby eliminating the need for gaskets and a frame and reducing the number of component parts of the light module. In some embodiments, the optics are discrete optics that can each be attached to the printed circuit board independent of the other optics.

Silicone-containing light fixture optics. A method for manufacturing an optical component may include mixing two precursors of silicone, opening a first gate of an optic forming device, moving the silicone mixture from the extrusion machine into the optic forming device, cooling the silicone mixture as it enters the optic forming device, filling a mold within the optic forming device with the silicone mixture, closing the first gate, and heating the silicone mixture in the mold to at least partially cure the silicone. Alternatively, a method for manufacturing an optical component may include depositing a layer of heat cured silicone optical material to an optical structure, arranging one or more at least partially cured silicone optics on the layer of heat cured silicone optical material, and heating the heat cured silicone optical material to permanently adhere the one or more at least partially cured silicone optics to the optical structure.

A light fixture having a front and opposing lateral sides, the light fixture includes at least one light source configured to emit a plurality of light rays towards the front and opposing lateral sides, each light ray is emitted at a first angle relative to an optical axis of the at least one light source, and at least one panel extending adjacent to the at least one light source and configured to refract the light rays emitted towards the opposing lateral sides such that light rays exit the at least one panel at a second angle relative to the optical axis that is less than the first angle.

A luminaire includes a housing, a luminous zone coupled with the housing, and one or more transition zones coupled with the housing and disposed adjacent to the luminous zone. The luminous zone provides a first light to an illuminated area, and the one or more transition zones provide a second light to the illuminated area. The first light is harsher than the second light. A method of illuminating an area includes providing a first light to the area from a luminous zone of a luminaire and providing a second light to the area from one or more transition zones disposed adjacent to the luminous zone within the luminaire. The first light is a harsher light than the second light.

A light fixture includes a fixture housing. In some examples, an optic that includes silicone and is at least 5 inches in diameter is coupled to the fixture housing, and the light fixture is compliant with standard UL-844. In various examples, a top cap assembly is coupled to the fixture housing natively or as a retrofit kit. The top cap assembly includes a top cap and an interface ring, and allows for the light fixture to be attached to an existing top cap.

Optics for asymmetrically redirecting light from one or more light engines include a dome optic, and first and second reflecting surfaces. The dome optic refracts light emitted by the light engines. The first reflecting surface redirects at least a portion of the light that is initially emitted toward a backward horizontal direction, toward the forward horizontal direction. The first reflecting surface extends substantially vertically and along a transverse horizontal direction, proximate to and behind the dome optic, and has a height greater than or equal to a height of the dome optic. The second reflecting surface reflects downwardly at least a portion of the refracted light that is initially emitted in the forward horizontal direction. The second reflecting surface is proximate to the dome optic and forward of the dome optic, and forms an angle of 45 degrees or more with respect to vertical.

Asymmetric vision enhancement optics, luminaires providing asymmetric light distributions and associated methods

A luminaire provides an asymmetric light distribution biased toward a forward horizontal direction. The luminaire includes a luminaire housing, light engines, dome optics, and first and second reflecting surfaces. The light engines emit light downwardly, and are in a row substantially orthogonal to the forward direction. Each of the dome optics is substantially similar, and refracts the light emitted by at least one of the light engines. The first reflecting surface reflects at least a first portion of the refracted light toward the forward direction, is proximate and behind each of the dome optics, forms an approximately vertical angle, and has a height greater than or equal to a height of the dome optics. The second reflecting surface is forward of the dome optics, forms an angle of 45 degrees or more with respect to vertical, and reflects downwardly at least a second portion of the refracted light.

The present invention, in some embodiments, provides a luminaire operable to enhance the uniformity of light distributed from the luminaire thereby mitigating diminished illuminance at the periphery of an illuminated area.

Luminaires for illumination of vertical surfaces of predetermined dimensions such as billboards or similar signs, the invention in several embodiments takes the form of reflector assemblies capable of directing light from a light source disposed within each of said luminaires either directly to the vertical surface or to refractive structures located on the luminaires for redirection of light to the vertical surface for even illumination of said surface with minimal light pollution from 'spill' light. Lamps used in embodiments capable of providing asymmetrical light distributions are located toward one or the other of side portions and are preferably vertically oriented. A main reflector is curvilinear in conformation and functions in concert with a secondary reflector located directly behind the lamp to direct light onto desired portions of a vertical surface. Luminaires configured according to the invention also utilize side reflectance panels for light control and for maximizing light directed onto a vertical surface, said luminaires also preferably including refractive lens elements for redirection of light onto the vertical surface. The reflector assemblies of the invention are mounted within weather-tight housings, the refractive structures conveniently being disposed on or formed integrally with a transparent glass or plastic cover that completes the housing, said cover being located between the lamp and the vertical surface to be illuminated. Efficiencies occasioned by the present luminaires permit illumination of billboards and similar signs of standard dimensions with only two of the luminaires and with full and even illumination with minimal light spillage, a capability approached previously in the art only with a greater number of luminaires.
