An apparatus for delivering air through a powered axle assembly and an improved powered axle assembly which incorporates the apparatus. The apparatus comprises: a base attachable to a non-rotating structure within the axle assembly and a rotor mountable in the axle assembly for rotating with the drive axle and for forming an air chamber between the rotor and the base. The base includes at least one air inlet for delivering air to the air chamber and the rotor includes at least one air outlet for air flow out of the chamber.

Apparatus for delivering air through powered axle assemblies

An apparatus and method for measuring gas flow rates and an improved automatic vehicle tire inflation system which utilizes the inventive gas flow measurement apparatus and method. The gas flow measuring apparatus and method utilize a porous media material effective for creating an appropriate pressure differential relative to the gas flow rate.

System for automatic tire inflation

A method for in-season macro and micronutrient application based on predicted yield potential, coefficient of variation, and a nutrient response index. The inventive method includes the steps of: determining a nutrient response index for a field; determining the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of an area to fertilize; determining the coefficient of variation of NDVI over a plot; determining a predicted crop yield for the area without additional nutrient; determining an attainable crop yield for the area with additional nutrient; determining the nutrient requirement for the area as the difference between the nutrient removal at the attainable yield minus the nutrient removal at the predicted yield, adjusted by the efficiency of nutrient utilization in the particular crop as indicated by the coefficient of variation.

Use of within-field-element-size CV for improved nutrient fertilization in crop production

A method for in-season macro and micronutrient application based on predicted yield potential and a nutrient response index. The inventive method includes the steps of: determining a nutrient response index for a field; determining the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of an area to fertilize; determining a predicted crop yield for the area; determining an attainable crop yield for the area; determining the nutrient requirement for the area as the difference between the nutrient removal at the attainable yield minus the nutrient removal at the predicted yield, adjusted by the efficiency of nutrient uptake in the particular crop. In one preferred embodiment, processing requirements at the time of application of the nutrient are eased by generating a lookup table of nutrient requirement relative to measured NDVI prior to application of the nutrient.

Process for in-season fertilizer nutrient application based on predicted yield potential

A spectral reflectance sensor including: a light source for emitting a modulated beam of red light; a light source for emitting a modulated beam of near infrared light; a receiver for receiving reflected light produced by either the red source or the near infrared source; a receiver for receiving incident light from either the red source or the infrared source; a signal conditioner responsive to the modulation such that the signals produced by the receivers in response to reflected and incident light from the source can be discriminated from signals produced by ambient light; and a microprocessor having an input such that the microprocessor can determine the intensities of incident red light, reflected red light; incident near infrared light; and reflected near infrared light. From these intensities, and by knowing the growing days since emergence or planting, the sensor can calculate the mid-growing season nitrogen fertilizer requirements of a plant.

Optical spectral reflectance sensor and controller

A nozzle attitude controller for use in connection with a farming apparatus for precision farming, the apparatus comprising an applicator vehicle, a boom supported by and extending across the rear of the vehicle, a manifold rotatably supported by the boom, a plurality of nozzles disposed from the manifold and oriented in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the vehicle, but disposed at an angle with respect to the horizontal, the attitude controller including a linear actuator operated by a stepper motor and a radar sensor which connects to the stepper motor and which measures the speed of the vehicle such that pulses from the radar sensor to the stepper motor moves the linear actuator to change the angle of the nozzle so that the horizontal component of its velocity is equal and opposite to the speed of the vehicle.

Nozzle attitude controller for spot and variable rate application of agricultural chemicals and fertilizers

A method for in-season fertilizer nitrogen application based on predicted yield potential and a nutrient response index. The inventive method includes the steps of: determining a nutrient response index for a field; determining the normalized difference vegetation index of an area to fertilize; determining a predicted crop yield for the area; determining an attainable crop yield for the area; determining nitrogen uptake for the vegetation within the area; and determining the amount of fertilizer nitrogen required by said vegetation. In one embodiment, the normalized difference vegetation index is determined by scanning an area to fertilize with a spectral reflectance sensor which provides reflectance values for red light and near infrared light. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is defined by: NDVI&equals;(NIR&minus;red)/(NIR&plus;red) where &ldquo;NIR&rdquo; is the reflectance value for near infrared light and &ldquo;red&rdquo; is the reflectance value for red light.

Process for in-season fertilizer nitrogen application based on predicted yield potential

In the subsurface application of herbicides, a plurality of upwardly directed nozzles having one millimeter openings are pulled beneath the soil surface behind the trailing side of a sweep in parallel paths two to four centimeters apart while jets of herbicide are emitted so that moving soil passing over each jet receives ample herbicide properly spaced to control germinating weeds. The pressure of application and speed of movement forms treated bands having widths before diffusion of five millimeters of soil and liquid uniformly mixed to a depth of approximately eight centimeters over the treated area. The sweep operates at a depth up to eight centimeters and pesticide incorporation depends on such variables as soil density, soil moisture, spacing of nozzles and injection pressure. A uniform distribution of chemicals in bands near or completely to the surface of the soil is made possible with a one-pass operation, while the soil and plant residue on the surface remain substantially undisturbed.
