The disclosure is directed to an electrosurgical generator comprising: an electromagnetic signal supply unit for generating electromagnetic, EM, energy to be conveyed along each of a plurality of channels. Each of the plurality of channels is arranged to convey electromagnetic energy at a different frequency. The electrosurgical generator further comprises an output port selectively connectable to each of the plurality of channels. The output port is connectable to an electrosurgical instrument for delivering the electromagnetic energy to biological tissue. The electrosurgical generator further comprises a tissue identification unit comprising a controller configured to: detect a signal indicative of a load impedance at the output port; determine a set of complex impedance values from the detected signals; identify a tissue type from the set of complex impedance values; and generate an output for communicating the identified tissue type to a user.

Electrosurgical system for identifying and treating biological tissue

The invention relates to a modular electrosurgical system for using electromagnetic (EM) radiation, such as radio frequency (RF) or microwave EM radiation, to treat biological tissue. In one example, control of the modules is centralised in a remote computing device which can communicate wirelessly with the modules of the system. In one example, different optional modules may be combined together with core modules to provide the system with different electrosurgical capabilities.

Modular electrosurgical system, and modules for said system

An electrosurgical instrument capable of performing both thermal ablation and electroporation in a minimally invasive manner. The instrument is dimensioned to fit within an instrument channel of an endoscope to enable non-percutaneous insertion. The instrument comprises a radiating tip mounted at a distal end of a coaxial transmission line to receive microwave EM energy from the coaxial transmission line and emit it as a field around the radiating tip. The instrument further comprises an auxiliary transmission line arranged to convey electromagnetic energy having an electroporation waveform to a microelectrode array mounted on the radiating tip. The electroporation waveform may be a radiofrequency or low frequency electromagnetic (EM) signal. The microelectrode array may comprise a plurality of nanoscale conductive electrode elements.

Electrosurgical instrument for performing ablation or electroporation of biological tissue

The disclosure relates to a sterilization apparatus which uses thermal or non-thermal plasma to disinfect surgical scoping devices such as endoscopes, gastroscopes, laparoscopes and the like. Aspect of the disclosure provide: (i) an apparatus for sterilizing inside an instrument channel formed with an insertion tube of a surgical scoping device, (ii) a whole-device sterilization apparatus for treating the entire exterior surface of a surgical scoping device, and (iii) an apparatus for cleaning and sterilizing a distal end face of an insertion tube of a surgical scoping device.

Sterilization apparatus

A treatment apparatus which uses thermal or non-thermal plasma to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) by destroying bacteria. The apparatus comprises an elongate probe that includes a coaxial cable for conveying radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic (EM) energy and/or microwave EM energy, a probe tip connected at the distal end of the coaxial cable for receiving the RF and/or microwave EM energy, and a gas conduit for conveying gas to the probe tip. The probe tip comprises a first electrode connected to the inner conductor of the coaxial cable, and a second electrode connected to the outer conductor of the coaxial cable, and wherein the first electrode and second electrode are arranged to produce an electric field from the received RF and/or microwave EM energy across a flow path of gas received from the gas conduit to produce a thermal or a non-thermal plasma.

Apparatus for treating urinary tract infections

An electrosurgical generator capable of supplying energy in a waveform that causes electroporation in biological tissue. The electrosurgical generator may comprise an electroporation waveform supply unit that is integrated with an electromagnetic signal supply unit for generating microwave electromagnetic signals and radiofrequency electromagnetic signals for treatment. The electrosurgical generator may be configured to deliver different types of energy along a common feed cable. The electroporation waveform supply unit comprises a DC power supply and a DC pulse generator. The DC power supply may include a DC-DC converter for up-converting a voltage output by an adjustable voltage supply. Each DC pulse may have a duration in the range 1 ns to 10 ms and a maximum amplitude in the range 10 V to 10 kV.

Electrosurgical generator for delivery of different types of energy to biological tissue

Sterilisation apparatus comprising a sterilisation instrument configured to be inserted through the instrument channel of a surgical scoping device and a withdrawal device for withdrawing the sterilisation instrument from the instrument channel at a predetermined rate. The sterilisation instrument comprises an elongate probe having a probe tip with a first electrode and a second electrode arranged to produce an electric field from received RF and/or microwave frequency EM energy. In operation the instrument may disinfect an inner surface of the instrument channel by emitting energy whilst being withdrawn through the channel.

Apparatus for sterilising an instrument channel of a surgical scoping device

Sterilization apparatus comprising a sterilization instrument configured to be inserted through the instrument channel of a surgical scoping device and a withdrawal device for withdrawing the sterilization instrument from the instrument channel at a predetermined rate. The sterilization instrument comprises an elongate probe having a probe tip with a first electrode and a second electrode arranged to produce an electric field from received RF and/or microwave frequency EM energy. In operation the instrument may disinfect an inner surface of the instrument channel by emitting energy while being withdrawn through the channel.

Apparatus for sterilizing an instrument channel of a surgical scoping device

A calibration method and apparatus for surgical antennas arranged to deliver microwave radiation into biological tissue. An emitting region of the antenna is exposed to a plurality of calibration standards having different complex impedances at the treatment frequency. Calibration standards are created in a short-circuit-terminated waveguide cavity of variable length. In another variation, each calibration standard is a different mixture of liquids. Measurement of the magnitude and phase of signals reflected from the emitting region when exposed to the calibration standard permits calibration of the antenna; Also disclosed is a tissue treatment apparatus having an ablation channel for conveying microwave radiation to a surgical antenna at a high power level, with a separate measurement channel for conveying radiation at a low power level. A surgical antenna having an impedance transformer for matching a coaxial feed structure that terminates in radiating elements with tissue to be treated is also disclosed.

Apparatus for treating tissue with microwave radiation and antenna calibration system and method

The present invention relates to an apparatus for classifying and/or ablating tissue. By directing microwave radiation through a probe () into tissue () and detecting the amplitude and phase of radiation reflected back through the probe and a reference signal, the tissue type can be classified. An impedance tuner which is actuated by magnetostrictive material () is also disclosed.

Tissue detection and ablation apparatus and apparatus and method for actuating a tuner

A calibration method and apparatus for surgical antennas which are arranged to deliver microwave radiation (e.g. having a treatment frequency of 500 MHz to 100 GHz) into biological tissue is disclosed. An emitting region of the antenna is exposed to a plurality of calibration standards each having a different complex impedance at the treatment frequency. In one embodiment the calibration standards are created in a short-circuit-terminated waveguide cavity of variable length. In another embodiment, each calibration standard is a different mixture of two or more liquids. Measurement of the magnitude and phase of signals reflected from the emitting region when exposed to the calibration standard can permit calibration of the antenna, e.g. by generating a mapping function based on the measured values and known or reference values for the calibration standards. Also disclosed is tissue treatment apparatus having an ablation channel for conveying microwave radiation to a surgical antenna at a high power level and a separate measurement channel for conveying microwave radiation to a surgical antenna at a low power level, wherein the measurement channel bypasses noisy components on the ablation channel. A surgical antenna having an impedance transformer for matching an e.g. coaxial feed structure which terminates in one or more radiating elements with tissue to be treated is also disclosed.

Apparatus for detecting a discontinuity within a non-biological element located within a biological structure, the apparatus comprising: a microwave energy source; a first antenna coupled to the microwave energy source and arranged to transmit the microwave energy into the biological structure; a second antenna arranged to receive at least a portion of the transmitted microwave energy; an antenna carrier arranged to have the first and second antenna affixed thereon and including means for moving the first and second antenna with respect to the biological structure; and a signal processing unit coupled to the second antenna arranged to determine the phase and/or magnitude response of the received microwave energy as a function of the position of the antennas with respect to the biological structure and provide an indication of the location of the discontinuity within the non-biological element according to the phase and/or magnitude response.
