A rechargeable aircraft battery assembly includes at least one lithium-ion cell having a positive cell terminal and a negative cell terminal and a battery management circuit operable to control charging and/or discharging of the lithium-ion cell. The battery management circuit is constantly off when the aircraft circuit is not engaged with the battery connector and is constantly on when the aircraft circuit is engaged with the battery connector.

Lead-acid storage batteries of the type having a plurality of cells, each including alternating positive and negative plates, each plate including an upstanding lug, and a partition separating adjacent cells are provided with unique improved lighter weight and lower resistance plate and intercell connectors. The connector comprises at least one cell plate connector including a wall with a multiple spaced slots for receiving the lugs from either the positive or negative plates of the cells. A strap extends from the cell plate connector. The cell plate connector and the strap are formed of a metal substrate that has a lower specific gravity and higher conductivity than lead, the substrate having a lead-based outer coating that resists the corrosive effects of the battery acid. A small amount of lead is then applied covering the slotted wall and at least a portion of each lug to insure good connection.

A direct current power source for powering an electric vehicle. The power source has a rechargeable battery and a battery charger control unit for providing a charge to the battery with an amount of electrical energy which corresponds to the amount of electrical energy discharged since the previous charge plus a selected additional amount of charge to slightly overcharge the battery during a full restoration. The battery charger control unit includes a charge monitor for determining the flow of electrical energy into and out of the battery and a charge controller for controlling a battery charger. In one embodiment, the battery and the battery charger control unit are integrated. In the preferred embodiment, the charge controller includes means for controlling the battery charger in accordance with the amount of electrical energy charged to and discharged from the battery as measured by the charge monitor. In addition, the charge controller may include means for controlling a function of the vehicle in accordance with the amount of electrical energy charged to and discharged from the battery as measured by the charge monitor.
