The application describes stabilized WRINKLED1 transcription factors, as well as nucleic acids, and expression cassettes that encode and express such stabilized WRINKLED1 transcription factors and that are useful for increasing production of oils in plants and seeds.

The application describes plants, plant cells, and seeds that express WRINKLED1 transcription factors and/or 14-3-3 proteins that are useful for increasing production of oils in plants and seeds. Also described are expression systems and cassettes that encode and express such WRINKLED1 transcription factors and/or 14-3-3 proteins.

14-3-3 proteins enhance WRINKLED1 transcription factor-regulated oil production

The present invention relates to novel diacylglycerol acyltransferase genes and proteins, and methods of their use. In particular, the invention describes genes encoding proteins having diacylglycerol acetyltransferase activity, specifically for transferring an acetyl group to a diacylglycerol substrate to form acetyl-Triacylglycerols (ac-TAGS), for example, a 3-acetyl-1,2-diacyl-sn-glycerol. The present invention encompasses both native and recombinant wild-type forms of the transferase, as well as mutants and variant forms. The present invention also relates to methods of using novel diacylglycerol acyltransferase genes and proteins, including their expression in transgenic organisms at commercially viable levels, for increasing production of 3-acetyl-1,2-diacyl-sn-glycerols in plant oils and altering the composition of oils produced by microorganisms, such as yeast, by increasing ac-TAG production. Additionally, oils produced by methods of the present inventions comprising genes and proteins are contemplated for use as biodiesel fuel, in polymer production and as naturally produced food oils with reduced calories.

The present invention relates to novel seed specific promoter regions. The present invention further provide methods of producing proteins and other products of interest and methods of controlling expression of nucleic acid sequences of interest using the seed specific promoter regions. The present invention also provides methods of identifying and isolating novel seed specific promoters.

Plant seed specific promoters

The present invention provides cyclopropane fatty acid synthase genes and proteins, and methods of their use. The present invention encompasses both native and recombinant wild-type forms of the synthase, as well as mutants and variant forms, some of which possess altered characteristics relative to the wild-type synthase. The present invention also provides methods of using cyclopropane fatty acid synthase genes and proteins, including in their expression in transgenic organisms and in the production of cyclopropane fatty acids in plant oils, and in particular seed oils.

The gene encoding a biotin carboxylase subunit of heteromeric ACCase has been isolated and sequenced. The cDNA sequence and deduced amino acid sequence is set forth in FIG.,and has been accorded GenBank Accession No. L38260. By controlling expression of the gene of the present invention, carboxylation of acetyl-CoA to produce malonyl-CoA may be controlled. Thus, by introducing constructs of the gene of the present invention in sense or anti-sense orientation, carboxylation of acetyl-CoA to produce malonyl-CoA may be increased or decreased. Consequently, fatty acid synthesis in plants and seeds which depends on malonyl-CoA in the plastid may also be controlled.

An Arabidopsis acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) gene has been isolated and sequenced. The 10 kb gene encodes a 251 kD cytosolic ACCase isozyme. The nucleic acid sequence of the gene is set forth in SEQ ID No. 1 and has been accorded GenBank Accession No. L27074. The cDNA sequence and deduced amino acid sequence of the cDNA are set forth in SEQ ID Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. By controlling expression of the gene of the present invention, carboxylation of acetyl-CoA to produce malonyl-CoA may be controlled. Methods of increasing oil content of seeds

A DNA encoding an acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) from a photosynthetic organism and functional derivatives thereof which are resistant to inhibition from certain herbicides. This gene can be placed in organisms to increase their fatty acid content or to render them resistant to certain herbicides.

The present invention relates to a process for producing lipids containing the fatty acid petroselinic acid in plants. The production of petroselinic acid is accomplished by genetically transforming plants which do not normally accumulate petroselinic acid with a gene for a .omega.12 desaturase from another species which does normally accumulate petroselinic acid.
