Fabrication techniques for and examples of metallic composite materials with high toughness, high strength, and lightweight for various structural, armor, and structural-armor applications. For example, various advanced materials based on metallic-intermetallic laminate (MIL) composite materials are described, including materials with passive damping features and built-in sensors.

The golf club head is preferably composed of a titanium alloy with a polymer layer disposed over a titanium alloy front wall. A preferred polymer is a polyurethane polymer.

A golf club head having a matrix layer composed of an interconnected reinforcement structure and a polymer material is disclosed herein. The matrix layer provides the golf club head with a greater coefficient of restitution during impact with a golf ball. The matrix layer is preferably disposed within a recess in the front wall of the body of the golf club head. The interconnected reinforcement structure is preferably composed of interconnected hexagonal cells.

By utilizing a polymer surface with desired material properties of stress, strain and damping levels, the face section will incur higher strain and strain rate levels than the golf ball. These lower internal stresses within the golf ball yield a more efficient impact with a golf club head.
