The present invention provides a process for removing elemental sulfur from fluids such as refined petroleum products transported through pipelines for the transportation of sour hydrocarbon streams. The sulfur-containing fluids are mixed with an inorganic caustic material, an alkyl alcohol and an organo mercaptan or sulfide compound capable of reacting with sulfur to form a fluid-insoluble polysulfide salt reaction product at ambient reaction temperatures. The treated fluid is then contacted with an adsorbent or filtered to remove the insoluble salt leaving a product of very low residual sulfur content.

Process for removing elemental sulfur from fluids

A process for removing elemental sulfur from fluids such as refined petroleum products transported through pipelines for the transportation of sour hydrocarbon streams. The fluids are contacted with a soluble quaternary ammonium hydroxide and preferably an organo mercaptan and alcohol to convert the elemental sulfur to a soluble polysulfide product which is substantially non-corrosive.

A process wherein a coked, deactivated iridium-containing catalyst can be reactivated in a sequence of burn steps, inclusive of a low temperature primary burn step and a subsequent high temperature burn step. In (1) the low temperature primary burn step (i) the chloride level of the catalyst is raised and the catalyst passivated by contact with a hydrogen chloride containing gas, (ii) and coke is then burned from the catalyst by contact with a gas which contains hydrogen chloride at level sufficient to suppress iridium agglomeration at a level of oxygen providing burn temperatures which do not exceed about 425.degree. C., this being sufficient to remove a preponderance of the coke without agglomeration of the iridium component. (2) In a high temperature secondary burn step the catalyst is subjected to (iii) a chlorination step wherein the catalyst is contacted with a hydrogen chloride containing gas sufficient to redisperse any agglomerated iridium, if any, produced during the low temperature primary burn, and raise the chloride level of the catalyst to a yet higher level for suppression of iridium agglomeration at higher temperature than 425.degree. C., (iv) residual coke is then burned from said catalyst by contact with a gas which contains hydrogen chloride at level sufficient to suppress iridium agglomeration at a level of oxygen sufficient to provide temperatures greater than 425.degree. C., sufficient to burn residual coke from the catalyst. The high chloride catalyst can then be (3) stripped with steam, or steam and hydrogen chloride to reduce the level of chloride.

Reactivation of iridium-containing catalysts

A process wherein a coked, deactivated iridium-containing catalyst can be reactivated in a sequence of burn steps, inclusive of a low temperature primary burn step and a subsequent high temperature burn step. In (1) the low temperature primary burn step (i) the chloride level of the catalyst is raised and the catalyst passivated by contact with a hydrogen chloride containing gas, (ii) and coke is then burned from the catalyst by contact with a gas which contains hydrogen chloride at level sufficient to suppress iridium agglomeration at a level of oxygen providing burn temperatures which do not exceed about 425.degree. C., this being sufficient to remove a preponderance of the coke without agglomeration of the iridium component. (2) In a high temperature secondary burn step the catalyst is subjected to (iii) a chlorination step wherein the catalyst is contacted with a hydrogen chloride containing gas sufficient to raise the chloride level of the catalyst to a yet higher level for suppression of iridium agglomeration at higher temperature than 425.degree. C., (iv) residual coke is then burned from said catalyst by contact with a gas which contains hydrogen chloride at level sufficient to suppress iridium agglomeration at a level of oxygen sufficient to provide temperatures greater than 425.degree. C., sufficient to burn residual coke from the catalyst without agglomeration of the iridium. The high chloride catalyst can then be (3) stripped with steam, or steam and hydrogen chloride to reduce the level of chloride.

Olefins and aromatic compounds in mixed hydrocarbon streams boiling above about 200.degree. F. are hydrogenated at a temperature ranging between about 400.degree. F.-720.degree. F. using a zeolite-containing catalyst that has been treated with a hydrocarbon stream relatively high in organic nitrogen compounds to suppress the cracking activity of the catalyst. The catalyst comprises (1) an amorphous base component, (2) a crystalline aluminosilicate component preferably comprising 5-30 wt. % of the total catalyst and having a silica/alumina mole ratio of at least 2.5 and an alkali metal content of less than about 2.0 wt. %, and (3) a transition metal hydrogenation component. The process is particularly useful in the manufacture of jet fuels and technical white oils and white oil bases with a minimum conversion of feed (&lt;20%) to substantially lower boiling products.

Process for the hydrogenation of olefins and aromatic compounds

This invention relates to an improved method of removing elemental sulfur from refined hydrocarbon fuels comprising adding an organo mercaptan compound and a copper compound capable of forming a soluble copper complex with said mercaptan and said sulfur and contacting said fuel with an adsorbent material to remove the copper complex and substantially all of said elemental sulfur.

Method of removing elemental sulfur from hydrocarbon fuel

An improved process for producing low pour point, high VI synthetic oils from feedstocks containing wax and residual olefinic unsaturation, said feedstocks having been obtained by thermal, non-catalytic polymerization of linear, C.sub.6 -C.sub.20 carbon atom monoalpha-olefins. The improvement comprises simultaneously hydrogenating and catalytically dewaxing the feedstock by contacting said feedstock and hydrogen with a hydrogen form mordenite catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure, thereby producing a stable synthetic oil of high viscosity index and low pour point.
