Techniques are provided for facilitating less expensive and more rapid implement and modification of processes, e.g., communications processes, performed in a vehicle, e.g., a commercial aircraft, by implementing those functions on a non-certified computer. This is because the non-certified computer and the functions which it performs do not require certification by a government entity. Optionally, the non-certified computer is communicatively coupled to a communications management unit which requires certification from the government entity. Optionally, the non-certified computer may be an electronic flight bag for commercial aviation applications.

Systems and methods for performing certain communication functions in a non-certified computer

A system for aircraft communications comprises an avionics processing unit onboard an aircraft, and a computing platform onboard the aircraft and in operative communication with the avionics processing unit. The computing platform hosts at least one application and one or more aircraft navigational charts with Air Traffic Control (ATC) center identifying information. An aircraft data network is also in operative communication with the computing platform. The avionics processing unit is operative to receive an ATC center facility designator input by a user or from another onboard avionics system, and to transmit the ATC center facility designator to the computing platform. The application is operative to query the aircraft navigational charts based on the ATC center facility designator to obtain corresponding ATC center identifying information, and to send the corresponding ATC center identifying information to the avionics processing unit.

System and method to fetch aeronautical telecommunications network center information from navigational charts for aircraft communications

A graphical in-flight message representation system comprises a sensor configured to measure a characteristic of a flight of an aircraft and a communication device configured to send and receive in-flight messages. An in-flight message is a message communicated during the flight of the aircraft. The system also comprises a display unit configured to display a graphical flight progress indicator and one or more message icons, each of the one or more message icons corresponding to a respective in-flight message. The graphical flight progress indicator is representative of the characteristic of the flight measured by the sensor. Each of the one or more message icons are displayed in location relative to the graphical flight progress indicator based on the measured characteristic of the flight when the respective in-flight message was communicated.
