Co-processable multi-layer laminates having a high T layer and at least one low T layer with layers having properties of high strength, lo- or no-haze, and transparency after processing into various multi-layer forms are useful for packaging and container applications. The multi-layer laminate has at least one low T layer of a first thermoplastic polyester having at least one crystallization rate inhibitor. The total amount of crystallization rate inhibitor is effective to prevent substantial haze in the low T layer upon heating. In most applications, the total amount of crystallization rate inhibitor also does not substantially inhibit strain-induced crystallization of the at least one low T layer when the laminate is stretched during processing. The multi-layer laminates of the invention have improved properties such as reduced shrinkage and/or high barrier properties, with a very small amount of high T material used to impart these improved properties to the laminate.

Co-processable multi-layer laminates for forming high strength, haze-free, transparent articles and methods of producing same

Multilayer laminates including films, sheets, preforms, containers and other articles having at least one wholly aromatic, amorphous, stretchable liquid crystalline polymer layer with at least one non-polyester thermoplastic polymer layer are provided as well as methods for producing and stretching the multilayer articles. The laminates are suitable for thermoforming and stretch blow molding applications and may be stretched at temperatures lower than the molten state of the liquid crystal polymer and at high total draw ratios without fractures or tears. Containers suitable for food or beverage products may be produced from the laminates.

Multilayer laminate formed from a substantially stretched non-molten wholly aromatic liquid crystalline polymer and non-polyester thermoplastic polymer

Multilayer laminates including films, sheets, preforms, containers and other articles having at least one wholly aromatic, amorphous, stretchable liquid crystalline polymer layer with at least one non-liquid crystalline thermoplastic polyester layer are provided as well as methods for producing and stretching the multilayer articles. The laminates are suitable for thermoforming and stretch blow molding applications and may be stretched to at least 100 percent elongation at temperatures below 200&deg; C. and at high total draw ratios without fractures or tears. Containers suitable for food or beverage products may be produced from the laminates.

Multilayer laminate formed from a substantially stretched non-molten wholly aromatic liquid crystalline polymer and non-liquid crystalline polyester and method for forming same

The surface of an aromatic liquid crystalline polyester film is modified to have improved adhesion by: (a) applying an adhesion-promoting coating to the film; (b) subsequently heating the film to a temperature above the melting point of the polyester; and, (c) applying pressure to the heated film. Preferably, the film is placed between two portions of a release film (e.g. a polyimide) prior to applying pressure.

Process for surface modification of an LCP film

A process for producing LCP films that have improved tear resistance, improved balance of physical properties, and relatively wrinkle-free surfaces. An annular co-extrusion die is used to line the LCP with one or more surface layers of a nonadherent polymer before the LCP becomes shear oriented. The multi-layer tube formed by the co-extrusion is sealed, stretched and cooled by passing it over a sizing mandrel. The tube is slit open into a flat configuration.

Thin LCP film process

The invention provides a multilayer microelectronic circuit board including a laminate of a plurality of circuit layers containing conductive vias within the layers or a combination of conductive vias and conductive wiring patterns on a surface of the layers, the layers comprising a first liquid crystal polymer and, interposed between said circuit layers, a layer of second liquid crystal polymer having a melting point of at least about 10.degree. C. lower than the melting point of the first liquid crystal polymer. The boards are produced by stacking a plurality of circuit layer sheets in appropriate electrical alignment such that they are separated by an interposed layer of the second liquid crystal polymer of lower melting point, and heating the stacked polymer sheets under pressure sufficient to bond the sheets or layers into a microelectronic printed circuit board, the temperature of the heating being sufficient to melt the lower melting second polymer but insufficient to melt the polymer present in the circuit layers. The second polymer layer may be interposed as a separate sheet during assembly or may be present as one or two separate surface layers in contact with the higher melting point polymer of the circuit layers.

Monolithic LCP polymer microelectronic wiring modules

A process for treating a liquid crystal polymer film which includes the steps of: heating a film obtained by extrusion molding of a liquid crystal polymer, while contacting at least one surface of the film with a supporting body, to melt the polymer; cooling the melted polymer to form a solidified polymer layer; and separating the solidified polymer layer from the supporting body. The process readily provides liquid crystal polymer films having excellent resistance to intra-layer delamination and high tensile strength and elongation, as well as excellent resistance to abrasion, dimensional stability when heated, and resistance to folding.

Process for treating liquid crystal polymer film

A contactless method for knurling thermoplastic film to improve its winding characteristics is disclosed. A preferred embodiment employs an ink jet printer to intermittently deposit ink upon at least one margin of the moving film surface. A second preferred embodiment employs a laser to intermittently modify at least one margin of the moving film surface. The invention eliminates the problem of stress gradient during web transport prior to winding which is inherent in contact knurling and particularly troublesome in the manufacture of high modulus, relatively thin thermoplastic films.
