In the method for producing a surface structure, material is ablated by means of a liquid jet ( ). The jet ( ) is emitted from a nozzle ( ) under high pressure (p). In this an ablation location ( ) is controlledly moved on a surface ( ) of a substrate ( ) to be structured with the production of a predetermined macro-topography ( &prime;) or a largely planar surface, namely through moving the nozzle and/or the substrate. The substrate is in particular part of a surgical implant. The liquid of the high pressure jet ( ) is emitted at a predetermined diameter d of the nozzle with a sufficiently high pressure p so that through the material ablation a linear track ( ) with quasi-fractal micro-topography ( ) is produced. In this the track width D is at least twice as large as d. Values for p and d are provided in the following range: 100 bar<p<3000 bar and 0.1 mm<d<10 mm; or p>3000 bar and d>0.03 mm.

Method for producing a surface structure, in particular on a surgical implant

A composite coating (1) resistant to wear is applied onto a substrate (2) and contains a mixture of hard material particles (3) and particles (5) of a solid lubricant (6). The particles (3, 5) are incorporated in a binder alloy (4). The lubricant particles are each enclosed by a protective envelope (7). The protective envelope substantially prevents bonding between components of the lubricant (6) on the one hand and components of the binder alloy (4) as well as of the hard material particles (3) on the other hand.

A parting compound in the form of a monolithic component (3a, 3b) is used in accordance with the invention for the hot forming of encased metal parts (2). This component consists of powder particles strengthened by sintering. The method makes possible the production of iron aluminide raw materials which consist of a Fe.sub.3 Al-base alloy containing 18-35% Al, 3-15% Cr, 0.2-0.5% B and/or C, and altogether 0-8% of the following alloying additives: Mo, Nb, Zr, Y and/or V, as well as iron as dominant remainder. In accordance with the invention additives are added to the melt of a known alloy, from which dispersed crystallites, dispersoids, are formed which thanks to good wettability become upon solidification, embedded in the monocrystalline phase. From the solid alloy, through hot rolling at a temperature between 650.degree. and 1000.degree. C., a fine grain structure may be generated.

Method of production of iron aluminide materials

The method according to the invention enables thin metal parts (10), in particular metal foil, to be produced from a reactive metal by means of hot forming. The reactive metal is embedded in a capsule (11), which consists of a second, plastically deformable metal, and release agents consisting of powder particles. The parting agents between the capsule wall and the reactive metal are applied in at least two layers (12, 13), preferably as an aqueous dispersion. The powder particles (e.g. boron nitride) of a first layer (13) which is applied to the reactive metal form an essentially more compact packing than the powder particles (e.g. calcium fluoride) of a second layer (12). The release agent of the second layer is plastically deformable or fluid in a highly viscous manner during the hot forming process. The novel method is less expensive than known methods in which the parting agent is applied by a thermal spraying process.
