A media handling device includes a media shingling mechanism having a roller actuator located adjacent an upper portion of a media stack and upstream thereof relative to a predetermined direction of an uppermost sheet from the stack toward a media restraint dam located downstream thereof. The roller actuator undergoes counterclockwise rotation in response to upward moving contact by successive sheets in the upper portion of the stack against a peripheral segment of the roller actuator as the stack is moved vertically upward in a rectilinear direction toward the roller actuator. The counterclockwise rotation of the roller actuator and upward movement of the upper portion of the stack produces a lateral displacement of successive sheets toward the dam so as to produce shingling of successive sheets of the upper portion of the stack relative to one another, providing a uniform inter-page gap between successive sheets.

An inkjet printer having a printhead closely adjacent a platen and a printzone therebetween has first and second juxtaposed counter-rotating feed rolls for transferring recording media from a first location where a media leading edge is located in an entrance nip between the first and second rolls and a second location where a media trailing edge is located in an exit nip between the first and second rolls. Printer control avoids printing to a media free printzone by sensing for the presence of a sheet of recording media within a nip between the primary and secondary feed rolls and selectively enabling and disabling the printer in accordance with the sensed media presence. The transverse dimension of a sheet of recording media may be estimated by multiple sensors and printer carriage travel limited to less than the estimated dimension.

Bracket (1) containing a gear train holds the end of spring (19) wound in a direction to be opened when the bracket moves up from the paper tray (7). Spring (19) is wound on an arbor (15) which is mounted on a shaft (9) which is located on the pivot axis of the bracket. Spring (17) is wound on a second part of the arbor in a direction to be closed when the bracket moves away from the tray. Spring (19) has a much tighter grip on the arbor than spring (17). In operation the bracket resists upward movement under the influence of stiff paper being fed, and is slowed in its downward movement to reduce bounce, which increases the speed at which a second sheet can be fed.

Media feed arm with directional damping

A driven gear (3a), a gear (11a) to a rotary solenoid (15a) and an output drive gear (19a) are mounted to rotate together, preferably as one part turning on a stationary shaft (7a). The driven gear and the output drive gear have disengagement sectors (5a and 20a). Activation of the solenoid turns the driven gear into engagement with a normally turning drive gear (1a). Shortly after the sector on the output gear is cleared, and the load (27) is driven through engagement with driven gear (23a). After one cycle, the detent force of the solenoid positions the sector 5a so that engagement is terminated. Because the rotary solenoid need only move the gears 3a, 11a and 19a, the size of the load is immaterial to the physical requirements for the solenoid and its reliability of operation.

Load-isolated, single-cycle mechanism

A gear train (1) pivoted (11) around its drive gear (3) rotates a drive roller (13) with increasing pressure until the top sheet of paper (15) is moved. The corner buckler (19) is moved around a pivot (25) under the paper tray to drive the buckler into the paper stack. A bottom roller (27) permits the drive roller to rotate when the tray is empty. To reduce the angular variation of the gear train, its pivot point may be lowered by positioning it to the side of the tray. The assembly adjusts automatically to correct feeding variations.

Auto compensating paper feeder

A single manually operated mode selector lever controls selection of a push, pull or park mode of operation of a form feed tractor in a printer. The lever controls a cam which moves a spring-biased tractor drive shaft axially so that a gear on the drive shaft selectively engages a first gear which drives the shaft in a first direction, a second gear which drives the shaft in a second direction, or engages no gear so that the drive shaft is not driven. The form feed tractors are mounted on the drive shaft so that the shaft may move along its axis relative to the tractors or the tractors may be pivoted relative to the shaft. The mode selector lever also controls a mechanism which applies a force to a tractor plate so as to pivot the tractors about the drive shaft, thereby changing the orientation of the tractors relative to the platen. The force applied to the tractor plate is also transmitted to pressure or pinch rolls in the pull mode to relieve constraint on movement of the forms.
