The present invention provides compounds for attracting bed bugs, compositions thereof, devices comprising said compositions and their use in the detection, monitoring and control of bed bugs.

Composition for attracting bed bugs

The invention provides analogs of (S)-germacrene D analog which have improved insect repellent properties compared to (S)-germacrene D analog or which have insect attractant properties.

Olfactory ligands

The present invention provides compositions for inhibiting the activity of an insect pest against a subject (or repelling an insect pest from an environment or preventing attraction to an environment) which compositions comprise geranylacetone as an active ingredient plus a carrier plus a further active ingredient selected from the list consisting of: 6-Methyl-hepten-2-one, octanal, plus optional other chemicals. Also provided are related materials and methods of use.

The invention relates to a lure for attracting, and in some circumstances, killing dust mites, especially house dust mites. The lure comprises neryl formate and/or limonene and is usually arranged in powder form to allow it to be shaken over an area containing the mites. What about liquid that dries.

cis-Jasmone has been discovered to be useful as a semiochemical that changes the behavior of insects and/or the physiology of plants. It has direct signalling roles with plant-feeding aphids, in attraction of aphid predators and parasitoids, and may act as an airborne signal inducing production of volatile plant semiochemicals, including the monoterpene (E)-&#x3b2;-ocimene, that stimulate foraging by parasitoids. It is an extremely benign compound having, to human beings, a pleasant aroma and gives a long-lasting effect after removal of the stimulus.

Derivatives of carbonyl-group containing behavior modifying compounds, in which said carbonyl group has been converted to a photolabile group which regenerates the carbonyl group on exposure to radiation, are of value in various methods for the control of animal, and in particular insect, species.

Behavior modifying compounds

Compounds of formula ##STR1## in which R represents hydrogen, formyl or an alkanoyl group of two to twenty-five carbon atoms and R' represents an alkyl group of one to thirty-five carbon atoms are of value as mosquito attractants, mosquitoes being attracted to a location where they and/or their eggs or larvae are then destroyed.

Insect behavior modifying compounds

A method of providing a high quality iso-.alpha.-acid preparation is described. The method involves extracting a high quality primary extract containing .alpha.-acids from hops using liquid CO.sub.2 and isomerizing the .alpha.-acids in the primary extract. The liquid CO.sub.2 extraction is performed at a sub-critical temperature of not less than -5.degree. C. The primary extract contains .alpha.-acids, .beta.-acids, hop oil and usually no significant amounts of other organic compounds originating from the hops. In the preferred method the primary extract is not purified and the isomerization is performed by boiling an alkaline solution of the extract. This boiling can be utilized to remove the hop oil. The .beta.-acids can be readily removed by acidifying the solution of iso-.alpha.-acid and filtering off the precipitated .beta.-acids. The iso-.alpha.-acid preparation is of outstanding purity and can be added to beer after fermentation and in particular to bright beer after final filtration to provide bitterness.

Production of an iso-.alpha.-acid preparation from hops
