A cassette for preparing an end face of an optical fiber includes a housing that defines a window, and a supply reel and a take up reel disposed within the housing. The cassette also has a preparatory tape, advancing between the supply reel and the take us reel, for preparing the end face of the optical fiber. In addition, the cassette includes means for directing the tape by the window defined by the housing such that the tape contacts and prepares the end face of the optical fiber.

A method and apparatus is provided for mounting any one of a plurality of types of connectors upon the end portion of a fiber optic cable. The automated fiber optic connectorization apparatus includes a memory device for storing data relating to a plurality of types of connectors. The automated fiber optic connectorization apparatus also includes a controller for receiving input from a system operator or other source that specifies the type of connector to be mounted upon the specified fiber optic cable, the polishing geometry, and the optical performance specifications. Based upon this input, the controller determines the components required to mount the specified type of connector upon the end portion of the fiber optic cable based upon the data stored by the memory device. The automated fiber optic connectorization apparatus also includes means for obtaining the necessary components and means for assembling these components upon the end portion of the fiber optic cable. Therefore, the automated fiber optic connectorization apparatus can automatically mount the specified type of connector upon the end portion of the fiber optic cable. The automated fiber optic connectorization apparatus can also include means for polishing the end face of the optical fiber and means for automatically inspecting the optical fiber after the end face of the optical fiber has been polished, but prior to mounting the connector upon the end portion of the optical fiber. The automated fiber optic connectorization apparatus can also test the optical performance of the connectorized fiber optic cable.

A method and apparatus are provided for inspecting an end face of an optical fiber. The apparatus includes a memory device for storing images of acceptable end faces and unacceptable end faces, and an imaging system for obtaining an image of the end face of the optical fiber. Further, the apparatus includes a means, responsive to said imaging system, for comparing the image of the end fare of the optical fiber with the images of acceptable end faces and unacceptable end faces to automatically determine if the optical fiber is acceptable.

The present invention is a process or method for cutting and boning a pork loin which includes back ribs and a semispinalis muscle adjacent the back ribs. The method involves separating the semispinalis muscle into a first portion and a second portion. The first portion remains adjacent the back ribs and the second portion is boneless. The resulting back rib cut contains a larger percentage of meat and is easier to consume.

The present invention is a process or method for preparing a pork meat morsel from a pork brisket bone portion having a hard bone, a forward end, and a rearward end. The process involves removing the hard bone from the brisket bone portion. The brisket bone portion is cut laterally with respect to the forward end to create pork meat morsels. The pork meat morsels are inexpensive, easy to prepare and easy to consume. As a result, previously undesirable, lower priced breast bone portions are converted into 'finger food' for which there is a higher demand by consumers.

An electro-optical contact assembly provides a connection between an electrical system and a fiber optic system for transmission of a signal therethrough. The assembly includes a converter for converting the signal between electrical and optical forms. The assembly also includes a receptacle with a retention mechanism mounted thereon which allows secure retention of an optical fiber terminus in the receptacle. The retention mechanism allows manual release of its clip from engagement with the optical fiber terminus in order to allow removal of the terminus from the receptacle, thereby allowing optical connection and disconnection of the assembly from the electrical system as well as other systems by simply plugging and unplugging fiber optic termini into and out of the contact assembly. The assembly includes a conductor surrounding the receptacle and terminus to provide EMI and RFI shielding of the terminus. The assembly also includes a thermoelectric structure thermally connected to the converter for cooling of a laser in the converter.

A system covering an area of ground for adverse conditioning web-footed aquatic birds against roosting in the area comprises an array of elongated members each sufficiently thin that a web-footed aquatic bird cannot roost upon an individual member and each sufficiently spaced in substantially horizontal planes from adjacent elongated members that a web-footed aquatic bird cannot roost simultaneously upon a plurality of the members, the array being sufficiently closely spaced to the ground at the aforementioned area to prevent the birds from alighting directly into the area.
