A prosthetic implant cement deflector is provided for use in prosthetic surgery when employing an implant in the form of a cannulated phantom or trial prosthesis in combination with a cannulated or cannulated surgical prosthesis or a cannulated prosthesis without a phantom prosthesis. Each cannulated phantom prosthesis or cannulated prosthesis has an insert portion for location in a bone canal and a cannulation bore extending through the insert portion to receive a guide wire. The phantom includes at least one cement deflector element adapted to slide in sealing engagement on the guide wire and which can act to seal the interface between the guide wire and the surface of the distal end of the cannulation bore. The sheath used with the implant has a preformed unperforated sheath adapted to extend over the insert portion of the implant from its distal end to a position at or adjacent to its proximal end.

Prosthetic implant cement deflector and method of implantation

The present invention is intended to provide a cementless prosthetic bearing element which has been molded and which is possible to place in an acetabular socket without cement, the outer surface of the backing being provided with elements to assist stabilization and the ingrowth of bone. Thus, the bearing element is cheaper and easier to produce and provides superior location and installation in the bone. According to the present invention a cementless prosthetic bearing element comprises a backing which supports a bearing liner having a bearing surface, the backing being molded from a rigid polymeric material and said bearing liner being made from elastomeric polyurethane material to which the backing is molded with an outer surface which includes a number of raised engagement features provided in directions extending away from and/or towards the outer periphery of the outer surface.

Cementless prosthetic bearing element

A prosthetic femoral component is located in a prepared socket in a femur which has been resected at a position on the proximal side of its neck. The component includes an insert portion and an enlarged proximal head portion the distal end of the head portion being adapted for location in the prepared socket. The component takes advantage of the bone at the periphery of the socket which enables the insert and the part of the head concerned to be accurately and firmly located in the bone. The presence of the bone at the outer edges of the socket helps to stabilize the component. The insert portion can be dimensioned to pass through the neck of the femur with which it is to be used or to be shorter depending upon the requirements.

Femoral hip prosthesis

A prosthetic femoral component is located in a prepared socket in a femur which has been resected at a position on the proximal side of its neck and Includes a tapered insert and a proximal head portion. The proximal end of the insert portion is adapted for location in the prepared socket and has a maximum dimension in a plane normal to the distal-proximal axis of the neck which is larger than the minimum dimension of the neck in a parallel plane. The component takes advantage of the bone at the periphery of the socket which enables the insert to be accurately and firmly located in the bone. The presence of the bone at the outer edges of the socket helps to stabilize the component. Preferably the tapered insert portion is flared outwardly in the proximal direction. The tapered insert portion can be dimensioned to pass through the neck of the femur with which it is to be used or it can stop short of it.

A prosthetic fixing plate comprises a component to be located into the acetabulum prior to the insertion of a prosthetic ball joint cap. The plate has a closure wall adapted to close the wall or rim of the acetabulum across any discontinuity therein, and a locator is provided for locating said closure wall in place. The fixing plate can be supplied in various sizes and arrangements, the correct plate being chosen by the surgeon after close examination of X-ray photographs of the patient and through the use of a template which is used to determine the size and arrangement of the discontinuity and thus the correct size and arrangement of the plate to be used.

Prosthetic acetabulum fixing plate

A femoral component of a replacement hip joint is provided which has a stem for fixing in cement in a medullary cavity by cement and having a separate proximal component provided with a neck for a ball head. An attachment system is provided for securing the proximal component to the stem which allows selection of an infinite number of angularly displaced positions about a proximal/distal axis, and adapted to allow fixation of the two parts after insertion of the stem into the prepared medullary cavity and without causing torsional loads on the stem. The stem extends proximally to the level of the bone cut which allows the proximal component to rotate after the stem is implanted. If an infinite number of angularly displaced positions is not required, then a Vernier coupling system with a large member of positions can be used.

Femoral component

A device for plugging the medullary canal of a bone to prevent the passage of locating cement and for centralising or guiding the stem of a prosthesis comprising a main body portion adapted to engage the wall of the canal to act as a plug and having a centralising or guide opening to receive the stem of the prosthesis.

Plugging and centralized device for locating the stem of a prosthesis

A prosthetic implant cement deflector for use in prosthetic surgery used when employing a cannulated phantom prosthesis and/or prosthesis having a bore for utilizing a guide wire and provided with an insert portion. The cement deflector element is adapted to slide on a guide wire and has an external profile large enough to seal the interface distal tip between the guide wire and the surface of the distal end of the bore.

Prosthetic implant cement deflector system

A prosthesis provided with a device for guiding its stem in a bone cavity and in which it is to be attached by cement. The sleeve guiding device comprises a sleeve having an opening to receive the stem and locate the sleeve on the stem at a position at or towards its proximal end. The is dimensioned and adapted to locate the stem in a predetermined position within the cross-sectional area of the bore of the bone cavity.

Prosthesis with centralizer and centralizer for use therewith

A surgical trephine is adapted for boring an opening in tamped bone chips and includes a hollow elongate body portion having an internal bore and the distal end of which has an annular cutting rim. A piston is located in the bore with a piston surface facing towards the cutting rim and a tool for moving the piston in the bore. With this device an elongate cavity can be cut in the bone chips. The debris from the cutting the bore enters the distal end of the internal bore and slowly pushes the piston up the bore away from the distal end. When the hollow elongate body portion is withdrawn from the cavity, the chips can then be easily dislodged from the bore by displacing the piston.

Surgical trephine

A prosthesis provided with a stem for fixation with cement in a bone socket, the proximal portion of the stem being provided with a number of shaped projections which are dimensioned to contact the inner wall of the bone socket and to act to guide the proximal end of the stem therein.

Prosthesis construction

An insertion system for a prosthesis has an inserter with a box-like attachment device mounted therein. The attachment device has an end wall, a bottom wall and a pair of sidewalls with a crossbar spaced from said bottom wall extending between said side walls. A resilient adapter engages a trunion on the prosthesis and includes an arm designed to engage the attachment device by locking under the crossbar. To prevent rotation a spring-loaded retractable rod is mounted within the inserter and can be selectively moved into and out of engagement with a locating element on the prosthesis.

Prosthesis inserter

An apparatus for attaching an anvil or an impaction hammer to a proximal impactor to be impacted into a bone. The apparatus includes an impaction rod, the distal end of which is provided with an attachment element for releasably securing it to a securing device provided on the proximal impactor.

Impaction hammer for bone chips

An apparatus for impacting bone chips in a bone canal. The impactor has an impaction head of predetermined dimensions and a stem extending therefrom. There is a visual indicator provided with means for secure location on said stem to visually indicate the distance of insertion of the impaction head within a bone canal.
