A continuous method of manufacturing a liquid dispersion containing submicron metal or metal compound particles inside a liquid bath. A metal-containing fluid with carrier gas mixture is bubbled through the liquid bath and predetermined conditions in the bath cause the fluid to decompose to form the submicron sized metal or metal compound particles in the liquid.

A process for varying the density of porous plated metal foams. Especially useful for battery plate applications, a plated foam is coated with a slurry of predetermined size metal power, particularly nickel, and then sintered. The resultant density of the metal foam may be adjusted as needed.

A porous nickel electrode substrate having a central high conductivity core sandwiched between two layers of porous conductive material such as nickel foam or nickel felt. The porous conductive material is plated with nickel and then sintered. By selectively controlling the plating of nickel on the porous material, variable conductivities may be designed into the substrate.

A sensor for measuring the density of a magnetic porous material such as foam. The sensor includes a load cell connected to a magnet. The magnet is spaced a predetermined distance away from the material. The load sensed by the pull of the magnet is translated into a perceivable density value.

Apparatus and method for determining the density of a metal plated

The invention provides a method of monitoring reagent levels in aqueous copper electrolytic solutions. To determine the amount of glue present in an electrowinning solution, potential is applied, decreasing in a cathodic direction (more negative) to initiate a first cycle peak. The first cycle peak is compared to a known to determine amount of glue in the solution. Additionally, voltage is cycled between upper and lower voltages to monitor glue/lignosulfonate ratios. Hysteresis and cycle stability are measured at reference voltages and compared to known hysteresis and cycle stability values to monitor glue/lignosulfonate ratio of electrolytic solutions.

Sponge titanium powder is compacted, advantageously by roll compaction to a density in the range of about 60% to 80% of the density of solid titanium metal, thereafter heat treated in vacuum at about 500.degree. C. to 750.degree. C., cooled in vacuum to 300.degree. C. and quenched to 100.degree. C. to provide a substrate for electrodes useful in electrolytic processes.

A cobaltic oxide hydrate is mixed with spent sulfate electrolyte and the slurry is sparged with air to liberate any entrained chloride ions as gaseous chlorine. Thereafter a reducing agent is used to enable dissolution of the cobalt and obtaining of a chloride-free solution from which, after purification, cobalt can be electrowon.

An electrolyte containing an organic buffering agent is used to electrowin nickel with a comparatively high bite in a diaphragm-free cell.
