An urethral compression apparatus is defined by a semi-cylindrical fenestrated dorsal hood that is worn dorsally on the penis and which is interconnected with a strap to a urethral compressor that is oriented ventrally to apply compressive pressure on the urethra to prevent urine leakage. The dorsal hood and the urethral compressor apply distributed pressure that prevents compromised venous and arterial circulation but eliminate incontinence. The device may be worn continually and is easily removed to allow voiding, then reattached. The fenestration in the dorsal hood (or plural fenestrations as the case may be) allows distribution of pressure to avoid venous and arterial blood flow interruption. The dorsal hood partially encircles the penile shaft and the urethral compressor is oriented ventrally and applies the desired pressure to the soft ventral tissues and the urethra. A strap applies tension between the dorsal hood and the urethral compressor, and thus the necessary compression between these two components.

Distributed pressure fenestrated urethral compression apparatus for treatment of male urinary sphincter deficiency with preservation of blood flow

A pulmonary secretion clearing airway structure and related airway management system is disclosed that has a double lumen portion which each lumen of the double lumen portion operably secured to an airway management system so that inspiratory fluid (air/oxygen mixtures, with or without added water vapor) is delivered to the distal end of the ventilation catheter through one of the two lumens and expired inspiratory fluid, pulmonary secretions, and pulmonary fluids are removed from the patient through the other lumen. The expiratory fluid pathway preferably includes a secretion collection system for removing the pulmonary secretions and the like from the pathway, thereby improving operation and safety of the system. The airway structure can be a ventilation catheter or a supraglottic airway system such as laryngeal mask and the like.

Secretion clearing patient airway management system

A retractor includes a handle portion, a blade portion coupled to the handle portion. The blade portion is configured for insertion into an internal region of a patient. The blade portion includes a first portion configured to manipulate tissue of the patient. In an embodiment, a locator element is configured to highlight an external region of the patient to indicate to a user the location of the first portion in the internal region. In an embodiment, a signal-transmission medium is coupled to the blade portion and has a port. An overmolded camera unit has a lens and is configured to couple with the port. When the camera unit is coupled with the port, the lens is oriented to capture images of the internal region.

Video retractor

Methods and systems for telemedicine are provided. A method for operating a telemedicine base unit includes initiating a remote connection with a remote care site. The remote care site may be selected from a plurality of remote care sites based on an attached medical device. The telemedicine base unit transmits the output from the attached medical device to the remote care site. Medical device operating instructions and other information are received from the remote care site. The medical device operation instructions provide guidance for operating the attached medical device.

Telemedicine systems and methods

Video-based laryngoscopes having an external centrally located channel coursing from the handle to a curved blade configured to deliver an ETT to a trachea as visualized by a non-removable, or alternatively, a removable video camera and lighting unit located beneath the external channel. The channel laryngoscope may be made for single use in a patient and discarded, or be processed for re-use. Alternatively, the channel laryngoscope may have a removable video camera and lighting member located within an internal chamber that runs parallel with the external channel. In another embodiment a laryngoscope adapter may be detachably affixable to the channel laryngoscope equipped with the non-removable camera to provide a decontaminated or sterile surface to permit re-use of the channel laryngoscope without having to undergo washing or decontamination procedures.

Channel laryngoscopes and systems

A retractor with a video system that has a blade portion detachably secured thereto is disclosed. In one embodiment, the video system is sealed within the retractor during use so that it need not be sterilized between uses. The blade portion is either reusable, in which case only it needs to be sterilized between uses, or the blade portion is disposable, thereby further preventing inadvertent contamination of the patient. The video system can be detachably secured to a variety of different shaped blade portions, thereby allowing the retractor, with its single video system, to operate effectively as a straight or curved blade laryngoscope, anoscope, colposcope, and the like.

Video rectractor

The configuration and arrangement of the instrument greatly facilitate safe placement of the instrument and an associated endotracheal tube. The instrument includes a handle with an arm extending therefrom. The arm includes a base portion and a distal lifter portion preferably having an angle between 5&deg; and 85&deg;, inclusive, and the lifter is sized and shaped to engage or lift the patient's epiglottis, thereby to expose the glottis. In a preferred embodiment, the base portion and lifter portion are substantially the same length, and a viewing device, which is preferably a Charged Coupled Device (&ldquo;CCD&rdquo;) or Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (&ldquo;CMOS&rdquo;) camera positioned near the transition portion between the base and lifter portions, is aligned to provide a perspective view toward the distal end of the lifter. Lights, which are preferably LED units, are positioned toward the distal end of the lifter to facilitate viewing. A heating element may be placed in thermal communication with the viewing device thereby defogging the viewing device during use. A transparent protective sheathing may be positioned over the assembly to facilitate cleaning and provide sterile multiple use of the device, and the lifter may be pivotally secured to the base portion to facilitate on-site adjustment by the practioner.

Intubation instrument

The configuration and arrangement of the instrument greatly facilitate safe placement of the instrument and an associated endotracheal tube. A transparent protective sheathing may be positioned over the assembly to facilitate cleaning and provide sterile multiple use of the device, and the lifter may be pivotally secured to the base portion to facilitate on-site adjustment by the practioner.

An apparatus and method for treating edema of a body member by pressure includes the use of a flexible, liquid-tight bag having connectors for securing the bag about the member. A liquid conduit, substantially smaller in section than the bag, is connected to the top thereof and is extended upwardly from the bag in use to increase hydraulic pressure in the bag and thereby pressure on the member when the conduit and the bag are filled with liquid.
