A high impedance surface () has a printed circuit board () with a first surface () and a second surface (), and a continuous electrically conductive plate () disposed on the second surface () of the printed circuit board (). A plurality of electrically conductive plates () is disposed on the first surface () of the printed circuit board (), while a plurality of elements are also provided. Each element comprises at least one of (1) at least one multi-layer inductor () electrically coupled between at least two of the electrically conductive plates () and embedded within the printed circuit board (), and (2) at least one capacitor () electrically coupled between at least two of the electrically conductive plates (). The capacitor () comprises at least one of (a) a dielectric material () disposed between adjacent electrically conductive plates, wherein the dielectric material () has a relative dielectric constant greater than 6, and (b) a mezzanine capacitor embedded within the printed circuit board ().

High impedance electromagnetic surface and method

A tunable high impedance surface device () includes a conductive ground plane () and a plurality of conductive elements (-) electrically connected to the conductive ground plane (). The device () also includes a plurality of capacitive elements (-) operable to vary a predetermined electromagnetic characteristic of the apparatus and standoffs () between the plurality of capacitive elements (-) and the plurality of conductive elements (-). In one form, laser-drilled and electrically conductive micro-vias () extend through the standoffs () thereby electrically connecting the plurality of capacitive elements (-) to a data bus (). The capacitive elements (-) may be integral with a circuit board () that supports the plurality conductive elements (-). Either the capacitive elements (-) or the conductive elements (-) are mechanically flexible and selectively movable to controllably adjust the distance () between the capacitive and conductive elements.

Tunable high impedance surface device

A small volume antenna () has the form of a polygonal (e.g., square) board with multiple antenna elements () located at vertices () (e.g., opposite vertices). The antenna elements () include two segments () that meet at corners () that are located at the vertices (). Peripheral portions () of a ground plane () that underlie the segments () of the antenna elements are deleted, and slots () that have two joined segments () that parallel the segments () of the antenna elements () are formed in the antenna elements. The antenna elements () are selectively loaded by switched impedance (e.g., capacitance) networks (). The antenna () is able to support operation in at least two broad operating bands.

Electrically small low profile switched multiband antenna

An antenna system includes a ground plane including a first corner and a second corner that are positioned along a first common edge. A first antenna element is disposed at the first corner of the ground plane and includes a first slot. A second antenna element is disposed at the second corner of the ground plane and includes a second slot. The first antenna element and the second antenna element are fed with an electromagnetic signal and the electromagnetic signal at the first antenna element is approximately 90 degrees shifted from the signal at the second antenna element. The first antenna element and the second antenna element form an antenna structure, and the antenna structure transmits circularly polarized radiation.

Low profile antenna pair system and method

A textured dielectric patch antenna is fabricated by applying a first mask pattern () to a first side of a solid panel made of a first material that is a ceramic dielectric and then sandblasting the solid panel through the first mask pattern from the first side to at least partially generate a shaped cavity (). The shaped cavity of the solid panel may be filled with a second material (). The first and second materials have substantially differing dielectric constants. The first side and second side of the solid panel are metallized (), forming a patch antenna. The shaped cavities can be made more complex by using additional masking and/or sandblasting steps.

Textured dielectric patch antenna fabrication method

An antenna () comprises an input port () for feeding an electrical signal, a radiating element () coupled to the input port that radiates energy of the electrical signal, a second port () coupled to the radiating element, a ground structure () coupled to the radiating element and second port; and a negative slope reactance circuit () characterized by a negative slope of reactance versus frequency, coupled to the second port. The antenna has a wideband frequency range relative to a natural bandwidth of the antenna.

Electrically small wideband antenna

An efficient antenna pattern shaping structure employs a parasitic element made of a conductive surface next to radio circuitry to shape the pattern of an associated antenna, preferably one that is a quarter wave antenna. The parasitic element is disposed on a first side of the radio circuitry to act as a reflector of electromagnetic energy. The parasitic element has at least two edges and wherein the at least two edges of the parasitic element are bent in a direction towards the radio circuitry in order to shape the antenna pattern more efficiently. The parasitic element is electrically slightly larger than a half wavelength of a frequency band of interest, preferably the low frequency of interest. A optional opposing parasitic element can be disposed on a second side of the radio circuitry opposite the first side. The opposing parasitic element is electrically slightly smaller than a half wavelength of the frequency band of interest, preferably half a wavelength of the high frequency of interest. A conductive surface, having bends at the ends and preferably grounded, on a side of a wiring board of the radio circuitry, can be used in addition to or instead of an independent parasitic element.
