Described herein is a process, comprising: a) selecting an API Group II base stock with selected viscosity index and pour point; b) blending a base oil with the base stock, and c) adding to the base oil: i) a liquid ethylene propylene copolymer viscosity modifier that reduces a traction coefficient, and ii) an additive package, to make a driveline fluid that has a defined viscosity index and excellent shear stability. Also provided is a driveline fluid composition having the high viscosity index and excellent shear stability, comprising: a) a base oil comprising from 50 wt % to 100 wt % API Group II base stock; b) a liquid ethylene propylene copolymer viscosity modifier that reduces a traction coefficient; and c) an additive package. Further provided is a method for lubricating an axle or manual transmission by supplying the driveline fluid composition.

Driveline fluids comprising API group II base oil

A method for forming a finished lubricant comprises selecting a target high temperature viscosity for the finished lubricant. A target high temperature viscosity for a base oil blend is selected. The target high temperature viscosity for the base oil blend is less than the target high temperature viscosity for the finished lubricant. At least two base oils from at least three viscosity grades of base oils are selected and mixed to form a base oil blend that meets the target high temperature viscosity for the base oil blend. The base oil blend is mixed with performance additive package and viscosity modifier to provide a finished lubricant that meets the target high temperature viscosity for the finished lubricant. The at least two base oils for the base oil blend having the target high temperature viscosity are selected such that less viscosity modifier is needed to meet the target high temperature viscosity of the finished lubricant.

Method for forming finished lubricants

A lubricating composition with improved storage stability comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity, at least one alkali metal borate, at least one polysulfide mixture having at least 40% dihydrocarbyl tetrasulfide or higher sulfides, and at least one non-acidic phosphorus compound comprised of a trihydrocarbyl phosphate and a dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate derivative is disclosed. In addition to improved storage stability, the composition has improved wear performance when the ratio of polysulfides is controlled.

Lubricating composition containing non-acidic phosphorus compounds

A lubricating oil composition having superior storage stability and load-carrying effect is disclosed. The composition comprises four components: (1) an alkali metal borate; (2) an oil-soluble sulfur compound; (3) a trialkyl hydrogen phosphite; and (4) a mixture of greater than 50% neutralized acidic phosphates that are essentially free of monothiophosphates.

Lubricating composition having improved storage stability

Gear lubricant with low Brookfield ratio

A multigrade automotive gear lubricant comprising a base oil having a traction coefficient less than 0.021. A method for saving energy using a gear lubricant, comprising blending a multigrade gear lubricant by adding a base oil having a traction coefficient less than 0.021, and using the gear lubricant in an axle or differential. A process for making an energy saving automotive gear lubricant having a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. greater than 10 cSt. A gear lubricant comprising a FT derived base oil having a VI greater than 150 and a traction coefficient less than 0.015. A finished lubricant, comprising a FT derived base oil having a traction coefficient less than 0.015. A base oil having a traction coefficient less than 0.011 and a 50 wt % boiling point greater than 582&#xb0; C.

Gear lubricant with a base oil having a low traction coefficient

The invention includes a process of making a lubricating composition including: contacting a heavy mineral oil feed in a hydrocracking zone with a hydrocracking catalyst at hydrocracking conditions, whereby at least a portion of the heavy mineral oil feed is cracked; recovering at least one gasoline-range fraction and one bottoms fraction from the hydrocracking zone; passing a first portion of the bottoms fraction including not more than about 67 wt. % of the bottoms fraction to a dewaxing zone; and passing a second portion of the bottoms fraction including at least about 33 wt. % of the bottoms fraction back to the fuels hydrocracker for additional processing; and where the bottoms fraction has a viscosity at 100&deg; C. of less than about 4.0; contacting the first portion of the bottoms fraction with a dewaxing catalyst under catalytic dewaxing conditions, where at least a portion thereof is substantially dewaxed; contacting at least a portion of the substantially dewaxed bottoms fraction with a hydrofinishing catalyst under hydrofinishing conditions, thereby producing a hydrofinished, dewaxed bottoms fraction; and removing from the hydrofinished, dewaxed bottoms fraction at least one light fraction including diesel or jet fuel range material, thereby leaving a heavy fraction including the lubricating composition having a naphthenes content of at least about 33 wt. %.

Process for making an automatic transmission fluid composition

The present invention provides for a lubricating composition including: a hydrocracker-derived, highly naphthenic, low viscosity index mineral oil; from about 2 wt. % to about 14 wt. % of at least one polymethacrylate polymer; and from about 2 wt. % to about 14 wt. % of a performance additive package. The hydrocracker-derived, highly naphthenic, low viscosity index mineral oil is prepared by: (1) passing a first bottoms portion including not more than about 67 wt. % of a fuels hydrocracker bottoms recycle stream to a dewaxing zone; and (2) passing a second bottoms portion including at least about 33 wt. % of the recycle stream back to the fuels hydrocracker for additional processing; and where the recycle stream has a viscosity at 100.degree. C. of less than about 4.0; (3) contacting the first bottoms portion with a dewaxing catalyst under catalytic dewaxing conditions, where at least a portion of the hydrocracker bottoms is substantially dewaxed; and (4) contacting at least a portion of the substantially dewaxed hydrocracker bottoms with a hydrofinishing catalyst under hydrofinishing conditions, thereby producing a hydrofinished, dewaxed hydrocracker bottoms; and removing from the hydrofinished, dewaxed hydrocracker bottoms at least one light fraction including diesel or jet fuel range material, thereby leaving a heavy fraction including the hydrocracker-derived, highly naphthenic, viscosity index mineral oil having a naphthenes content of at least about 33 wt. %. The lubricating composition has an unsheared kinematic viscosity at 100.degree. C. of at least about 7.3 centistokes; a sheared kinematic viscosity at 100.degree. C. of at least about 6.8 centistokes, where shear is measured by the 20-hour KRL method; and a Brookfield viscosity at -40.degree. C. of no greater than about 10,000 centipoise.

Automatic transmission fluid composition

The invention includes a tractor hydraulic fluid composition containing a major amount of a base oil mixture. The base oil mixture includes a first mineral oil having a kinematic viscosity at 100.degree. C. of at least about 4.0 centistokes and a second mineral oil having a kinematic viscosity at 100.degree. C. of at least about 7.0 centistokes. The tractor hydraulic fluid composition also contains a first polymethacrylate viscosity index improver and a second polymethacrylate viscosity index improver having a lower shear stability index than the first polymethacrylate viscosity index improver. The tractor hydraulic fluid composition has an unsheared kinematic viscosity at 100.degree. C. of at least about 9.1 centistokes, a sheared kinematic viscosity at 100.degree. C. of at least about 7.1 centistokes, and an unsheared kinematic viscosity at -40.degree. C. of not more than about 20,000 centipoise.

Tractor hydraulic fluid

A desulfurizing and dewaxing process which can be performed in a single reaction vessel is disclosed. The desired lowering of oil partial pressure for dewaxing zone is accomplished by adding diluent gas to the HDS-zone effluent, thus obviating the need for other means to maintain differing oil partial pressures between serial catalyst zones.

Process for dewaxing and desulfurizing oils

A process for producing lubricating oil base stock from a feedstock having a VI of less than 80 to a base stock with a VI of at least 90 with the same boiling range as the feedstock. The feedstock is contacted with a zeolite-containing hydrocracking catalyst in a first zone and an amorphous hydrocracking catalyst in the second zone. Between 25 percent and 75 percent of all hydroconversion takes place in the first zone.
