A process for producing a chloroisocyanuric acid compound which comprises reacting cyanuric acid with a chlorinating agent consisting of an aqueous solution of hypochlorous acid substantially free of ionic impurities having a pH of less than about 2. The process produces chloroisocyanuric acid compounds with reduced volumes of effluent solutions and significantly reduced amounts of gas released during operation. The novel process for producing chloroisocyanuric acid compounds can employ solid forms of cyanuric acid as a reactant.

Process for producing chloroisocyanurate compounds with concentrated

A solid calcium hypochlorite composition contains calcium hypochlorite and an alkali metal salt of phosphonobutane polycarboxylic acid having an available chlorine concentration of at least 50 percent by weight. It has been found that the use of the novel compositions of the present invention can significantly reduce scale formation in dispensers for calcium hypochlorite particularly where water having high total alkalinity is used. The prevention or inhibition of scale formation is accomplished without harmfully affecting other properties of the pool water such as the pH.

Calcium hypochlorite compositions containing phosphonobutane

A process for producing hypochlorous acid by reacting an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in droplet form with gaseous chlorine to produce hypochlorous acid vapor and solid alkali metal chloride particles in which the improvement comprises employing molar ratios of gaseous chlorine to the alkali metal hydroxide of at least about 22:1. The process achieves high yields of hypochlorous acid by minimizing side reactions including the formation of chlorate as an impurity in the alkali metal chloride particles produced. The hypochlorous acid solution produced contains from about 35 to about 60 percent by weight of HOCl, a dissolved chlorine concentration of less than about 2 percent by weight, and is substantially free of alkali metal ions and chloride ions.

A solid calcium hypochlorite composition contains hydrated calcium hypochlorite and an alkali metal salt of phosphonobutane polycarboxylic acid having an available chlorine concentration of at least 50 percent by weight and a water content of at least 4 percent by weight. It has been found that the use of the novel compositions of the present invention can significantly reduce scale formation in dispensers for calcium hypochlorite particularly where water having high total alkalinity is used. Process for making methylphosphonic dichloride

A sanitizing composition consisting essentially of a mixture of a calcium hypochlorite compound and a peroxydisulfate compound having the formula: M.sub.x S.sub.2 O.sub.8 where M is an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, and x is 1 or 2 is employed in treating water to improve pH control and provide increased removal of organic materials. The compositions provide improved sanitation of water in swimming pools, spas, and cooling towers by efficiently oxidizing organic impurities while helping to minimize the increase in the pH of the water. This permits a reduction in the amount and frequency of addition of acidic compounds such as hydrochloric acid to the water bodies. Further, the incorporation of additives such as algaecides, dispersants, and clarifying agents provides for significant improvements in water quality as evidenced by sparkling pure water.

Calcium hypochlorite sanitizing compositions

A process for producing cyanuric acid which comprises feeding a urea hydrohalide compound to a pyrolysis zone. The urea hydrohalide compound is pyrolyzed to produce a solid reaction mixture of cyanuric acid and an ammonium halide. The solid reaction mixture is vaporized to remove the ammonium halide to form a gaseous mixture containing ammonia and hydrogen halide which is simultaneously removed from the pyrolysis zone. The cyanuric acid recovered is substantially free of ammonium halide. The novel process produces high purity cyanuric acid in the absence of liquid effluents while readily recovering the ammonia and hydrogen halide values.

Process for producing cyanuric acid from urea hydrohalides

A process for producing a sodium compound comprises admixing trichloroisocyanuric acid, cyanuric acid, and sodium bicarbonate to form a homogeneous mixture. The homogeneous mixture is reacted with water and a sodium dichloroisocyanurate compound recovered. The novel process minimizes the cost of raw materials and maximizes the available chlorine present in the reaction mixture.

Process for the production of alkali metal salts of dichloroisocyanuric

Water sanitizing compositions are disclosed which are comprised of a mixture of trichloroisocyanuric acid and an alkaline earth metal solubility promoting additive selected from the group consisting of the bicarbonate, carbonate, hydroxide, oxide and mixtures thereof of said alkaline earth metal. The compositions have a molar ratio of said additive to trichloroisocyanuric acid of from about 0.3:1 to about 3:1 and a moisture content of less than about 0.2 percent by weight of the compositions. The novel compositions rapidly dissolve in water bodies such as those found in swimming pools, commodes, automatic dishwashers and the like to quickly provide a sanitizing amount of available chlorine for sanitizing the water.

A highly pure cyanuric acid is produced by a process which comprises gradually adding a nitrogenous material capable of producing cyanuric acid, such as urea, to a hot N-methylpyrrolidone solvent. The overall process converts substantially all of the urea to cyanuric acid which, upon drying, is a free flowing product capable of being converted into trichloroisocyanuric acid and similar compounds with a minimum of extra processing while allowing substantially complete recovery of the N-methylpyrrolidone solvent for reuse.

Preparation of cyanuric acid

A process for producing calcium hypochlorite from lime containing insoluble impurities comprises reacting the lime with an aqueous solution of hypochlorous acid to form a reaction mixture comprised of coarse dibasic calcium hypochlorite crystals and fine insolubles comprised of fine dibasic calcium hypochlorite crystals, insoluble impurities, and unreacted lime. Coarse dibasic calcium hypochlorite crystals are separated from the reaction mixture, leaving a slurry comprised of an aqueous calcium hypochlorite solution containing fine insolubles. The slurry of fine insolubles is separated and the resulting clarified aqueous calcium hypochlorite solution is used to wash occluded fine insolubles from the coarse dibasic crystals. The resulting wash solution is combined with fine insolubles and the resulting slurry is reacted with hypochlorous acid and filtered to remove insoluble lime impurities. The clarified solution is mixed with the washed coarse dibasic calcium hypochlorite crystals and then reacted with an aqueous solution of hypochlorous acid to produce hemibasic calcium hypochlorite. The resulting slurry is reacted with an alkali metal hydroxide and chlorine to form an aqueous paste of calcium hypochlorite dihydrate crystals. The paste is then dried to produce granular calcium hypochlorite by spray drying or spray graining. The hypochlorous acid is produced by reacting an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in finely divided form with gaseous chlorine.
