A brake actuator has a housing containing tappets operable by a cam to apply brake shoes against a rotary brake drum. The housing defines a cavity to which lubricant is admitted. A flexible element which is not compressed at the maximum positive system lubricant pressure and is disposed within the cavity and subject to lubricant pressure. The element is movable during outward movement of the tappets to compensate for any increase in volume of the cavity caused by tappet outward movement. This avoids the occurrence of negative pressure in the cavity.

Brake actuator

An improved drum-type brake of the cam actuated type incorporating a formed return spring. The return spring is anchored relative to the backing plate in such a way that it cannot move circumferentially or axially but its flexing action is not interferred with. The arrangement for fixing the intermediate portion of the return spring to the backing plate also affords a means for affixing a dust shield to the backing plate. The cooperation of the return spring with the brake shoe and the mounting of brake shoes holds the brake shoes parallel to the backing plate and facilitates servicing.

Shoe return spring

A cam actuated drum-type brake having an improved mounting arrangement for the power unit that actuates the brake. The actuator for the brake includes a camshaft rotatably journaled within a tube that is affixed to the backing plate and to which is affixed a mounting bracket that mounts the power unit. The mounting bracket has a mounting portion for the power unit and is disposed at an angle to the axis of rotation of the brake drum and also at an angle to a plane perpendicular to the axis of the drum. The arrangement is such that the mounting bracket may be moved without necessitating disassembly of the brake or removal of the brake drum.

Air chamber mounting bracket

An automatic adjuster comprises a transmission member, suitably a crown wheel, and thrust assemblies, of which the effective lengths are adjustable to adjust the spacing between a pair of shoe-ends, and the crown wheel is coupled to a brake-applying cam through a lost-motion connection, and a clutch. In a brake-applying mode the transmission mechanism is operative to increase the effective lengths of the thrust assemblies after the lost-motion has been taken up and until a critical point is reached at which the clutch slips in one direction. An inhibit mechanism is incorporated for limiting movement of the crown wheel in the opposite brake release mode until any previous excess movement of the crown wheel in the brake-applying mode has been accommodated by slippage of the clutch in the opposite direction.

Automatic adjuster for a vehicle shoe-drum brake

A drum-type brake and actuating system therefor comprised of a camshaft, cam and actuator mechanism that are contained within an actuator housing and a tubular shaft which journals the camshaft. A lubricant fitting permits lubricant to be introduced into both the tubular member and the actuator housing. In addition, an automatic adjuster is contained within an adjuster housing which communicates with the actuator housing and a pressure responsive valve that permits lubricant introduced through a grease fitting to be discharged from the adjuster housing. An expandable member is contained within the actuator housing for compensating for effective volume variations and precluding the exhaust of lubicant and the introduction of air during such changes.

Lubrication system for drum brakes

An improved air chamber mounting bracket (40) for mounting an air chamber (41) to a rotary cam (32) actuated brake (10) is provided. The bracket includes a slot aperture (70) and a multiple hole aperture (72) for receiving air chamber mounting fasteners (44 and 46) for properly and positively positioning the air chamber for use with various length (54) slack adjuster levers (39). The slot aperture and the multiple hole aperture are centered about a longitudinal axis (74) for constant alignment of the air chamber in each selected mounting position thereof.

Universal air chamber mounting bracket

A caliper assembly for a sliding caliper disc brake of the open back type wherein the brake pad assemblies are positioned on opposite sides of the brake disc by a pair of washerhead bolts which pass at their free ends through bores in one side wall of the caliper for threaded engagement with nuts and which pass adjacent their head ends through radially outwardly opening slots in the other side wall of the caliper with the washerhead portions of the bolts received in counterbores which are formed in the outer face of the other caliper side wall and which communicate with the slots in that side wall. With the described slot/counterbore construction, the bolts may be moved axially by an amount to withdraw their free ends from the bores in the one side and withdraw their washerheads from the counterbores, whereupon the portions of the bolts adjacent the bolt heads may be moved radially outwardly through the slots in the other side wall while the remainder of the bolts, together with the brake pad assemblies carried thereby, may be moved radially outwardly through the open back of the caliper.

Disc brake friction pad bolt locking method

Disclosed is a brake shoe assembly (40) for frictionally braking a moveable member such as a wheel of a motor vehicle. Assembly (40) includes a frictional liner (8) that is removeably secured to a support member (2) that is adapted to move liner (8) towards and away from the member to be braked. Liner (8) is removeably secured to member (2) by means of at least one retainer (34) having a base portion (10) in embedded securement in liner (8) from which at least one pair of spaced-apart legs (12) extend towards support member (2) and through corresponding openings (4) therethrough to respective ends (14) thereof that are adapted to facilitate removal of liner (8) for replacement or repair.

Brake shoe assembly

The invention relates to a portable workshop having various facilities for performing precision machine work at a work site and which includes a mobile trailer having first and second sections with transport wheel and suspension assemblies and a trailer hitch whereby the trailer may be easily towed from one work site to another. One section is separable from the other and the transport wheels remain with one platform while smaller wheels are provided on the other platform with elevating mechanism to lower the platform onto the smaller wheels. One platform may have equipment such as a welder which might be separated and used on one location at the job site while the other section has various tools, including a crane and a container for storing the tools, which might be moved to and utilized at another location at the site.

Portable workshop

An improved expanding shoe drum brake (10) is provided. The brake includes a pair of brake shoes (20) pivotably retained on an anchor structure (18). The shoes include brake tables (22) and webs (26), the webs are resiliently urged by a spring (132) into constant sliding engagement with three guide surfaces (78, 88 and 114) to locate the webs on a plane (P) relative to the spider and to retain a substantially parallel relationship between the shoe friction material (24) and the brake drum (12) thereby minimizing the required running clearance (44) or slack of the brake.

Expanding shoe drum brake

An improved expanding shoe drum brake (10) is provided. The brake includes a shaft-like mounting structure (42) for retaining the hook ends (40) of a heavy duty brake return spring (28). The retaining assembly includes a fixed portion (44) and an axially movable portion (46). The axially movable portion is normally abutting with the fixed portion but may be selectively axially moved away therefrom for assembly and disassembly of return spring (28) from the brake assembly (10).

Drum brake

A lining wear indicator for a disc brake of the type including a transversely disposed bridge bar carried on the outboard end of a push rod assembly and bearing against the inboard face of the inboard brake pad. The lining wear indicator comprises a pair of pins secured at their outboard ends to the respective radially outer ends of the bridge bar and extending axially inboard through aligned bores in the inboard web of the caliper to provide, as a function of the length of pin exposed inboard of the inboard caliper web, a measure of the remaining thickness of the brake pads.

Wear indicator for disc brakes

An automatic slack adjuster (10) having a lever housing (30) containing interior components to be lubricated and defining a first bore (36) in which a worm gear (38) is received, a second bore (42) intersecting the first bore in which a worm (44) and worm shaft (52) are received and a third bore (54) in which a drive mechanism (72 & 66) for rotating the worm shaft is received is provided. A lubricant fitting (150) is provided into the first bore and a passage (152) is provided between the first and third bore. Seals are provided to seal the exterior openings of the bores. The passage (152) defines in part a lubricant path between the fitting and the exterior opening (73) to the third bore which is configured so that the resistance to the flow of lubricant from the fitting (152) to the exterior opening (73) of the third bore is greater than the resistance to the flow of lubricant between the fitting and any other interior component to be lubricated. A boot (116) is received on the exterior surface of a sleeve like projection (118( defining the opening of the third bore to provide a static seal to the interior of the third bore. A smooth continuous groove (120) is provided on the exterior surface of the projection for cooperation with a bead (117) formed on the interior surface of the boot.

Slack adjuster

An improved slack adjuster (10) of the clearance sensing type for brakes of the type having a running clearance adjustable by controlled rotation of a shaft (52) such as cam (14) actuated brakes. The slack adjuster includes a one-way drive mechanism including a spring clutch (86) wrapped around the ends of a driving shaft (62) and a driven shaft (52) which is adapted to slip when the torque necessary to rotate the driven shaft exceeds a predetermined limit. The surface (138) of the driven shaft under the spring clutch is provided with a deposit (142) of material different from the remainder of the shaft which will improve the wear and/or frictional characteristics of the surface. The improvement comprises providing a shoulder (148) at the end (146) of the surface of the driven shaft closest the driving shaft which has been found to improve the resistance of the deposit to chip and/or separate from the shaft during assembly and/or use.

An anti-wheel lock, system for a vehicle with tandem axles each having a pair of rotatable wheels, the vehicle having a braking system for applying braking forces to such wheels. A brake control device responds to an applied lock signal for controlling the braking system to relieve the braking forces on the wheels. The input circuitry provides for distinct wheel speed signals having values respectively representing the wheel speeds of the four wheels (or wheel sets) carried by the tandem axles. A high wheel gate continuously produces a signal representing the speed of the fastest rotating one of the four wheels by determining the fastest rotating wheel on each pair and then the fastest moving wheel between the pairs. A low wheel gate similarly obtains and continuously provides a signal related to the speed of the slowest moving wheel of the four. An average wheel gate of simplified construction produces a signal simulating the average wheel speed by in effect averaging the outputs of the high and low wheel gates. In a preferred embodiment the speed signals fed to the gates are provided by nonlinear frequency to voltage convertors driven in response to corresponding ones of the four wheels. Logic circuitry provides a locked wheel signal when values of, and changes in, the speed signals from such gates indicate or predict a skid condition.
