An arc tube assembly () for a protected high intensity discharge lamp. The assembly has a ceramic arc tube () with a short shroud () surrounding at least the arc chamber () of the arc tube. The short shroud () allows the frit seal areas () of the arc tube capillaries () to project beyond the shroud () and thereby operate at a lower temperature, thus increasing lamp life.

Ceramic HID arc tube assembly

The HID lamp mount has a discharge tube with two ends. A shroud surrounds the tube. Shroud clips position the shroud ends. The shroud clips have arcuate portions engaging the shroud periphery and transverse portions spanning the shroud diameter and grasping and positioning the tube ends. A shroud rod attaches between the clips to maintain their positioning. An electrical lead-in connects the second electrode terminus and has a first leg extending transversely from the terminus and a second leg extending parallel to the electrode. An offset electrical lead-in connects the first electrode terminus, and has a first section extending transversely to the first electrode, a second section extending parallel to the shroud, a third section extending toward the shroud, and a fourth section extending parallel to the shroud. An offset electrical lead-in retaining clip is affixed to the shroud and the fourth section of the offset electrical lead-in retaining clip.

Mount for high intensity discharge lamp

Shroud holder for quartz and ceramic arc tubes

A lamp assembly that comprises a hollow arc discharge light source having a center arc chamber containing an arc generating and sustaining medium and first and second ends with an electrode receiving capillary extending from each end and arrayed along a longitudinal axis. The ends are cylindrical in cross-section. An electrode structure is positioned in each of the capillaries and each of these electrode structures comprises a proximal electrode end projecting into the interior of the center arc chamber, a distal end projecting exteriorly of said capillary and an intermediate section therebetween. A first area of the intermediate section is sealed to the capillary in an hermetic manner and a second area of the intermediate section is exposed to the medium. A tubular shroud surrounds the light source and is coaxial with the longitudinal axis. The shroud has two ends. A pair of spring clips, one at each end of said shroud, mount the light source within the shroud. Each of the spring clips comprises a base in a first plane and has an aperture centrally located therein, each aperture of one of the spring clips frictionally engaging one of the cylindrical ends of the light source at a position adjacent the second area of the intermediate section. Both spring clips are electrically connected to a frame, which is electrically to one of the electrode structures.

Starting aid for high intensity discharge lamp

A metal halide lamp with high color rendering index, greater then 80, with substantially constant color temperature through life. The lamp arc discharge vessel has a small volume, i.e., less than 1 cc, and contains iodides of sodium, scandium, lithium, dysprosium, and thallium along with mercury, a buffer gas and scandium metal. The addition of the scandium metal does not raise the arc discharge vessel temperature and significantly reduces the color temperature decline during life.

High CRI metal halide lamp with constant color throughout life

An hermetically sealed arc tube which comprises a hollow body having oppositely disposed ends aligned along a longitudinal axis and containing an arc generating and sustaining medium therein. An electrode is positioned in each end of the hollow body and an ionization zone is positioned adjacent to one of the ends and is a part thereof. The ionization zone is exposed to an atmosphere different than the arc generating and sustaining medium.

Capacitive glow starting of high intensity discharge lamps

An arc tube for a discharge lamp comprises an hermetically sealed hollow body containing an arc generating and sustaining medium therein and having first and second ends. An electrode receiving capillary extends from each end and an electrode structure is positioned in each of the capillaries. Each of the electrode structures comprises a proximal, electrode end projecting into the interior of the hollow body, a distal end projecting exteriorly of the capillary, and an intermediate section therebetween, a first area of the intermediate section being sealed to the capillary in an hermetic manner and a second area of the intermediate section being exposed to the medium. A starting aid comprises an electrically conducting member surrounding the capillary extending from the first end at the second area of the intermediate section and is electrically connected to the distal end of the electrode structure positioned in the second end. The starting aid provides a capacitively coupled ionization mechanism for starting the lamp.

Capacitive glow starting of ceramic high intensity discharge devices

A reflector lamp 10 has a vitreous outer envelope 12 formed of a concave reflector 14 and a light-transmitting 16 cover peripherally sealed thereto. The concave reflector and cover are symmetrically arrayed about a longitudinal axis 18 and a substantially cylindrical, hollow neck 20 having a given depth is affixed to the concave reflector opposite the cover. The neck 20 also is symmetrically arrayed about the longitudinal axis 18 and has a substantially closed bottom 21. At least two eyelets, 22, 24, respectively, are sealed in the bottom 21 and a light source capsule 26 is positioned in the concave reflector and aligned with the longitudinal axis 18. The light source capsule 26 has a first end 28 situated in the neck 20 and a second end 30 extending into the concave reflector. The light source capsule 26 comprises a quartz arc tube 32 containing an arc generating and sustaining medium and a surrounding aluminosilicate glass shroud 34. First and second conductive lead-ins 36, 38, respectively, are sealed into a first seal 40 formed at a first end 42 of the shroud 34. Each of the lead-ins 36, 38 has a first portion 44, 46, respectively, sealed in one of the eyelets 22, 24. The first conductive lead-in 36 has a second portion 48 extending interiorly of the shroud and connecting a first electrode 50 of the arc tube and contains a bend or offset 49 to take expansion differences during operation. The second lead-in 38 has a second portion 54 terminating within the first seal 40. An outer conductor 56 has a first end 58 sealed in a second end 60 of the shroud 34 and connects a second electrode 62 of the arc tube 32. A middle section 64 of the outer conductor 56, which is surrounded by an electrically insulating sleeve 57 for at least part of its length, extends exteriorly of the shroud 34 and has a second end 66 connected to the second said lead-in 38. A conventional screw base 68 completes the lamp.

Low wattage lamp having formed arc tube in aluminosilicate outer jacket

An arc discharge tube has electrodes supported by hollow electrode support tubes at each end. A slot is formed in the electrode support tube. One edge of the slot is depressed inwardly to form a concave surface. The slot is located adjacent to the end cap of the arc tube and provides access to the interior of the electrode support tube. After the electrode assembly is sealed into one end of the arc tube, amalgam particles are dispensed into the arc tube. The arc tube is agitated rapidly, causing the amalgam particles to pass through the slot and drop into the interior of the electrode support tube. The amalgam particles are isolated from heat during sealing of the other end of the arc tube.

Method for amalgam relocation in an arc discharge tube

A mounting assembly for a reflector lamp. The mounting assembly comprises a 0.050' diameter stainless steel rod that has been formed into a three-turn spiral. The spiral surrounds the inner jacket mount assembly of the reflector lamp, and fits into the neck region of the reflector. The lower leg of the spiral either takes the place of, or augments a 'dummy' lead presently used in the inner jacket press, so that one or both fit into the reflector eyelet opening in the neck of the reflector. The opposite end of the spiral piece extends upwardly, and is connected to the upper lead of the Model No. PAR30L inner jacket mount assembly of the Model No. MPD70 lamp.

Mounting support for a high intensity discharge reflector lamp

A metal halide discharge lamp includes an outer evacuated sealed glass envelope having a domed end and a socket end spaced from the domed end along a longitudinal axis. The socket end is subject to high temperature sealing fires during the lamp manufacturing process. A getter material is contained in the envelope for removing gaseous materials therefrom, the getter material being positioned in the envelope in an area of the lamp remote from the socket end. A pair of electrical conductors extend into the interior of the glass envelope and an arc tube containing an arc sustaining chemical fill and including a pair of spaced electrodes is electrically connected to the electrical conductors for creating an electric arc during operation of the lamp. The getter material comprises about 70 weight percent zirconium, about 24.6 weight percent vanadium, and about 5.4 weight percent iron. The activation temperature of the getter is in the range of 400.degree.-500.degree. C.

A metal halide arc discharge lamp comprising: an arc tube containing an arc generating and sustaining medium and having first and second electrodes sealed at opposite ends thereof; an outer envelope surrounding said arc tube and having first and second terminals for electrical connection thereto; an electrical connector coupling said first electrode to said first terminal; an electrical connector coupling said second electrode to said second terminal; a heat reflecting coating on at least one end of said arc tube; a starting aid operatively associated with said arc tube; and a light transmissive shroud positioned about said arc tube on at least two sides thereof; said arc tube having a given wall thickness of about 0.5 mm and said shroud having a thickness greater than said given thickness, the ratio of said shroud wall thickness to said arc tube wall thickness being about 2. The lamp has an increased CRI over lamps made with thicker-walled arc tubes and the thinner arc tube material allows the use of 1 mm thick shrouds which still provide containment in the event of an arc tube burst.

Discharge lamp with enhanced performance and improved containment

An electric lamp includes an arc tube assembly mounted in a lamp envelope including a reflector, a lens and a base for connection to an electrical source. The arc tube assembly includes an arc tube having a longitudinal axis aligned with the optical axis of the reflector, a light-transmissive shroud disposed around the arc tube, first and second clips attached to opposite ends of the arc tube, a connection member attached to the first and second clips such that the shroud is retained between the first and second clips in a fixed position relative to the arc tube, and upper and lower electrode supports for mechanically supporting the arc tube in the lamp envelope entirely from the base region and for coupling electrical energy to the arc tube. A support ring is positioned in a heel region of the lamp envelope and is attached to the connection member. The support ring cushions the arc tube assembly when the lamp is subjected to mechanical shock. The connection member includes a connection rod having a first section located outside the shroud between the first and second clips and a second section extending between the first section and the support ring.

Reflector lamp assembly including metal halide arc tube

An arc tube fabricating process wherein an oxygen-absorbing getter is affixed to at least one of a pair of electrodes, one of the electrodes is sealed into the end of a tubular ceramic envelope, a dosage is deposited in the tubular ceramic envelope and the other one of the pair of electrodes is sealed into the other end of the tubular ceramic envelope.
