A surgical saw includes a saw assembly for being driven by a powered surgical handpiece and having a pair of parallel, co-planar guide arms, a pair of flexible, endless cutting bands disposed around the guide arms, respectively, and a drive mechanism for driving the cutting bands around the guide arms in a cutting direction. The cutting bands each include a plurality of spaced cutting teeth connected to one another by flexible band segments. The cutting bands are driven by the drive mechanism relative to the guide arms in opposite directions along defined paths to cut anatomical tissue at distal ends of the guide arms. A method of resecting bone includes the steps of driving the cutting bands relative to the guide arms in the cutting direction along the defined paths and inserting the distal ends of the guide arms in the bone to resect the bone along the plane of the guide arms.

Failsafe apparatus and method are disclosed for controlling fluid flow from syringes. One or more syringes are positioned so that the piston of each syringe is caused to be precisely displaced to thereby safely deliver medicament from the syringe to a patient. To effect movement of each piston, a rack is provided, either as a part of the piston or secured thereto, and longitudinal movement of each rack is effected by rotating an associated pinion gear that is connected with a pulse-driven, stepper motor utilized in a power-efficient electromechanical configuration, with the operation of the stepper motor being accomplished through dual-redundant state machines controlled by a pre-programmed memory unit, and with the apparatus being repeatedly subjected to a plurality of error checks and data integrity verifications to assure continued proper operation.

Failsafe apparatus and method for effecting syringe drive

A syringe positioning device is disclosed for enhancing control of fluid flow from a syringe. A disposable unit that includes a syringe and rack mounted on a retaining clip is positionable on a drive unit so that, when so positioned, the piston of the syringe is precisely displaced to deliver medicament from the syringe to a patient. A non-disposable unit is also disclosed onto which a syringe and piston can be positioned so that the device thereafter also provides precise medicament delivery. The longitudinal movement of the rack is effected by rotating the pinion gear that is connected with a pulse-driven, power efficient stepper motor, with the operation of the stepper motor being controlled by a pre-programmed memory unit. A hinged rack is also disclosed, as is a one-way ball drive unit.

Syringe positioning device for enhancing fluid flow control

A storage receptacle sealing and transfer apparatus is disclosed for selectively enabling sealing and transfer of material to and from the receptacle. The apparatus is particularly useful for maintaining and later transferring drug and associated materials, under sterile conditions, to achieve mixing, as, is necessary, for example, in reconstituting a drug by mixing the drug with a diluent prior to delivery to a patient. The transfer apparatus is mounted at the aperture, or mouth, of a storage receptacle to seal the aperture until the contents are needed, and then to permit sterile transfer from one receptacle to another receptacle through a central passage. The apparatus also includes venting through one or more passages offset from the central passage for supplying or discharging air into the storage receptacle as needed, and a filter is included in each vent passage, with the filter being permeable to passage of gases, including air, in either direction through the vent passage, but precluding passage of liquid or solid materials or microorganisms in either direction through the vent passage. The central passage and all venting passages are sealed until use, and the central passage also includes a septum in one disclosed embodiment, with a penetrating unit being included for access through the septum to the interior of the storage receptacle for delivery or withdrawal of substance therefrom.

A cable connector cover for use primarily with telephone cable connectors is provided with knock-out panels for bringing a connector half into the cover from an outlet box and for creating screw openings for mounting on the outlet box. Further mounting is possible by the use of snap-in inserts fitting within diagonally arranged pockets on the rear of the cover, which inserts may magnetically or adhesively be joined to an external object. Screws for holding the cover on an outlet box are carried in a press-fit holder within the cover, and the holder is spaced above an underlying wall by a sufficient distance that tape segments for use on the inserts can be stored between the wall and screws. Further knock-out panels provide mounting for modular jacks. Adjustable cable passage openings seal around various cable sizes or may be closed by plugs. A movable contact member in each cable passage opening is provided with flexible ears that are cammed into wrapping engagement with small cables to also permit the movable member to approach very close to the terminal end of the cable opening.
