In a method for applying pressure sensitive labels to products such as hollow articles by moving the label carried on a label web and providing for an acute bend of the label web to transfer the label to a hollow article, the improvement comprises heating said label directly to elevate the temperature above ambient temperature before the acute bend to warm the label sufficiently to permit the pressure sensitive adhesive on the label to flow sufficiently to enter the microscopic surfaces of the hollow article. In one form, the heating comprises directing warm air directly against the label while it is on the label web. In another form, heating said label comprises providing a heating plate in direct contact with the label web on the surface of the label web opposite to that on which said label is carried. The apparatus comprises means in advance of the acute bend for heating said label while it is carried by the label web directly to elevate the temperature above ambient temperature before the acute bend to warm the label sufficiently to permit the pressure sensitive adhesive on the label to flow sufficiently to enter the microscopic surface irregularities of the surfaces of the hollow article. In one form, the heating means comprises plenum means for directing warm air directly against the label while it is on the label web. In another form the heating means comprises a heating plate means in direct contact with the label web on the surface of the label web opposite to that on which said label is carried. The apparatus includes means for moving the heating plate means into and out of contact with the web.

Method and apparatus for applying pressure sensitive labels to hollow

A method and apparatus for decorating containers by printing wherein the containers are moved successively past screen decorating stations or passes. The apparatus includes an entrance end and a discharge end. Reciprocating conveyors are associated with each pass and provision is made for engaging and lifting a container for printing at each pass. A discharge assembly is provided between each pass. Multiple infeed conveyors are provided at the entrance end of the apparatus and at the exit end.

Apparatus and method for applying labels in the molds of a plastic blow molding machine of the type wherein a plurality of sets of molds are mounted on a wheel rotatable about a horizontal axis. Mold sections are moved toward and away from one another to enclose a parison, and the parison is then blown to the confines of the cavity between the mold sections. The apparatus removes labels successively from one or more magazines, and deposits labels on an endless conveyor that transports the labels to a position adjacent an open mold. The apparatus laterally transfers the labels successively from the conveyor to a position within the mold sections, such that when a mold closes about a plastic parison and the parison is blown, the labels become adhered to the blown plastic article. The label magazines are mounted in horizontal orientation, and the label pickup mechanisms are moved by a positive-action slider crank in a straight line for picking up and removing a label from the magazine, and in a straight line for delivering the label to the conveyor while the conveyor is stationary. The label placement apparatus is positively driven to remove the label from the conveyor while it is stationary and deliver it to the mold cavity.

Apparatus for applying labels in the molds of a plastic blow molding

In the forming of an article by blow molding parisons into conformity with cavities of an array of mold sections wherein parisons in the form of tubes are extruded from an extruder into an array of neck molds on a head, the head is moved axially away from the extruder to define the parisons, mold sections are closed about the parisons, and the parisons are blown outwardly, an apparatus for application of labels to the hollow blown plastic articles which comprises an array of vacuum cups mounted on the head and movable with the head and a mechanism operable to move the vacuum cups outwardly to engage labels on magazines and move the labels inwardly toward the head and to thereafter move the labels outwardly and deposit them in the mold cavities when the head moves adjacent the mold cavities. Provision is made for moving the vacuum cups in a controlled slow manner upon removing the labels thereby obviating problems of removing multiple labels or damaging the labels when then are made of material such as plastic.

Apparatus for applying labels to blow molded articles

A method and apparatus for delivering labels to the blow molds and removing blown containers with the labels thereon from a blow molding apparatus wherein the apparatus precludes access to the upper or lower ends of the molds. A carriage is reciprocated horizontally between a position externally of the blow molds and a position within the blow molds. The carriage supports pick-up heads that pick up labels from magazines, deliver them between the mold halves and deposit them on the mold halves. The carriage also supports container removal devices that engage the blown containers with the labels thereon and remove them from a position between the mold halves.
