A stud driver has threaded jaws with thread relief provided on a leading edge area of the jaws to reduce thread marking or deformation of the thread on the stud when the stud is driven under high torque conditions. The thread relief in the leading edge area of the jaws creates a shallower angle and increases contact area. If the stud driver is subjected to unusually high torques, the increased contact area prevents shearing of the thread on the stud.

There is provided a connector for use between rotatably driven tools, preferably an upper tool which is a torque limiting device, and a lower tool which is a stud driving tool. The connector has a driven head disposed within a socket of an adapter housing, the driven head further being disposed within the body of the lower tool when the combination is assembled. The connector can also allow the body of the lower tool to be freely rotatable with respect to both the adapter housing and the driven head when assembled. Both the torque limiting device and the stud driving tool can be of improved configurations themselves.

Combination stud driving tool and torque limiting device

An automatic stud driving tool is provided having a carriage, and a set of jaws disposed within the carriage. The jaws and carriage are provided with permanent contours that prevent the jaws from being withdrawn from the carriage when the jaws are open, but which do not prevent such withdrawal when the jaws are closed. The carriage and jaws are rotationally interlocked, and the carriage is capable of axial movement within a body element only when the jaws are closed, and axial movement of the carriage within the body results in the engagement and disengagement of a rotational drive from the carriage. Automatic operation of the tool can be enhanced through the use of a depth gauge.

Automatic stud driving tool

A stud driver for the insertion of studs into a workpiece. The stud driver automatically grasps the stud once the stud is inserted into the stud driver. Once the stud is inserted into the workpiece, the stud driver automatically releases the stud. The stud driver employs a set of jaws to grasp the stud. The jaws, which are biased open by a plunger means, are enclosed with a carriage. In the peripheral wall of the carriage, two sets of balls are held. The balls prevent the jaws from sliding out of the carriage and from rotating in the carriage. The carriage is driven by a driven head which is connected to the driving means. The carriage and driven head are held in an uncomplicated hollow cylinder which is the body.

A controlled-torque apparatus having a first cylindrical member and a second cylindrical member held together by means of a ball bearing positioned in a hole in the sidewall of the second cylindrical member cooperating with a bearing race on the interior sidewall of the first cylindrical member, thus longitudinally securing while allowing relative rotation. The torque control is provided by a spring which exerts vertical pressure on ball bearings extending through apertures in the base of the second cylindrical member into part-spherical recesses in the base of the first cylindrical member.
