An electrical surge arrester includes an arrester block stack with a plurality of cylindrical surge arrester components arranged substantially coaxially to form a cylindrical stack of components having a longitudinal axis. First and second electrical conductive terminals are disposed at each end of the block stack and electrically coupled to the components. A spacer is disposed between each of the terminals and the plurality of cylindrical surge arrester components. A crimp pin is disposed in each of the metal terminals to plastically deform the terminals to compress the block stack. Rubber sheds can be directly molded around the device.

Arrester block module assembly and method

An electrical connector, such as a bushing insert, includes a housing with an inner bore, opposite ends. One end has an opening providing access to the inner bore. A piston-contact element is movable between first and second axially spaced positions within the inner bore. During fault closure or short circuit conditions, the piston-contact element accelerates connection with a male contact of an electrical connector, such as a cable connector, thereby inhibiting the formation of flashover or electrical arc.

A disconnector assembly is provided for an arrester. A non-conductive housing has first and second opposite ends separated by an internal chamber. A first electrical terminal is connected at the first end. A second electrical terminal is connected at the second end. A capacitor engages and extends between the first and second terminals in the internal chamber. A sparkgap is electrically parallel the capacitor between the first and second terminals. A cartridge with an explosive charge is positioned in the internal chamber, and the cartridge is electrically parallel the capacitor and electrically in series with the sparkgap.

A disconnector assembly is provided for an arrester. A non-conductive housing has first and second opposite ends separated by an internal chamber. A first electrical terminal is connected at the first end. A second electrical terminal is connected at the second end. A capacitor assembly engages and extends between the first and second terminals in the internal chamber. The capacitor assembly includes a capacitor and a resistor electrically connected in series. A sparkgap is electrically parallel the capacitor assembly between the first and second terminals. A cartridge with an explosive charge is positioned in the internal chamber, and the cartridge is electrically parallel to the capacitor assembly and electrically in series with the spark gap.

A disconnector assembly connects and then isolates and disconnects an arrestor between a power line and ground. The disconnector assembly has a bracket that has a base and a wall. The wall extends substantially perpendicularly from the base and defines a cavity. An isolator assembly is disposed within the cavity. A cap is connected to the wall remote from the base to close the cavity. A blind bore extends into the cap from a surface thereof remote from the cavity. A stud is partially disposed in the bore. An adhesive between the cap and the wall secures the cap to the wall.

Disconnector assembly for an arrestor

An insulator assembly for a polymeric cutout assembly has a core with first and second ends and an outer surface. First and second end caps are attached at the first and second core ends. The end caps have outer surfaces. A sleeve is disposed on the outer surface of the core. A projection extends laterally outwardly from an outer surface of the sleeve. An insulator is molded around the outer surface of the core, the sleeve and the first and second end caps. A center pin is attached to the projection to secure the cutout assembly to a support.

Polymeric cutout assembly

A high voltage insulator has a fiberglass reinforced core surrounded by a polymer weathershed housing with a plurality of fins. Metal fittings are located at both ends of the insulator and are connected to the weathershed housing by shielding collars. A corona protection device of semiconductive elastomeric material is attached or bonded to the exterior of the shielding collar or the metal fitting. The interface between the corona protection device and the shielding collar or metal fitting may include a sealant or other compound.

An end fitting for an insulator includes a main cast body for securement to an external structure and a non-machined annular flange rigidly attached at an end of the main cast body and defining a hole for receiving an end of a fiberglass rod to secure the annular flange to the fiberglass rod in assembling the insulator. At least a portion of the annular flange is formed of a preformed annular member defining at least an interior diameter of the annular flange. The use of the preformed annular member eliminates the need for two costly secondary machining operations to prepare the annular flange for receiving and crimping on the fiberglass rod of the insulator.

An insulator having a torque-resistant or torque-prevailing crimped insulator end fitting; including a method of crimping the insulator end fitting so as to be resistant to torque tending to loosen mounting bolt connections of the insulator. A fiberglass core is located in the insulator and protrudes from the opposite ends of the insulator, and has end fittings seated thereon in close interference engagement, by mounting the insulator through intermediary of the end fittings being attached to power devices by threaded bolts extending from the devices being engaged in the tapped bolt holes. Radially inwardly directed crimping forces are applied to the cylindrical wall structure of the end fittings intermediate the locations of the bosses having the bolts tightened within the threaded bolt holes, and thereby produce a bolt-locking deformation of the bolt holes.

Torque prevailing crimped insulator fitting

A reinforced electrical insulator has a load sustaining mechanical core with a pair of attachment members located at its longitudinal ends. One of the attachment members extends longitudinally into the mechanical core to provide reinforcement to the mechanical core. The mechanical core member is constructed of a rigid, dielectric material with a first end section, a second end section, and a center section. A plurality of weathersheds extending outwardly from the center section of core member in a substantially radial direction relative to the longitudinal axis. The first and second end sections having maximum widths which are larger than the maximum width of the center section. The attachment members have inner portions embedded within the end sections of the core and outer portions extending outwardly from the end sections of the core. One of the attachment members has its inner portion embedded within the center section of the core and its outer portion provided with first and second posts extending outwardly from the core. The first and second posts have their centers spaced apart by a distance which is greater than the maximum width the second inner portion. In the preferred embodiment, the posts are threaded with their centers lying on a 2.25 inch or 3 inch circle.

Reinforced insulator

An electrical insulator for supporting an electrical conductor includes a load sustaining molded core, a mounting on the core, an dielectric sheath, and a metal cap. The molded core is formed of a dielectric polymer with opposite longitudinal ends and a profiled lateral outer surface between the ends. The dielectric outer sheath overlies the core outer surface and has a weathershed extending laterally outwardly relative to the core. A metal cap is secured to one end of the core by the metal cap having a portion directly molded to the core. The mounting is located on the end of the core opposite the metal cap.

A device for connecting, and then isolating and disconnecting an arrester includes a non-conductive housing with two electrical terminals. The housing has opposite ends separated by an internal chamber. The terminals are mounted at the housing ends. A resistor engages and extends between the terminals in the housing internal chamber. A cartridge with an explosive charge is mounted in the internal chamber adjacent the resistor. A gap spacer surrounds the cartridge, is adjacent one of the terminals and is spaced from the other terminal.

Isolator device for arrester

An electrical insulator in the form of a pintype insulator has a load sustaining mechanical core and a dielectric sheath overlying the mechanical core to protect the mechanical core from the weather. The mechanical core is constructed of a load sustaining dielectric material which is different from the dielectric material of the sheath. The mechanical core has a profiled outer surface with a top groove, two side grooves, an annular rib and an axially extending threaded bore. The dielectric sheath is applied over the mechanical core as thin as practical to minimize the amount of sheath material being used. However, the dielectrical sheath is molded on the mechanical core to form a pair of weathersheds which can either extend radially outwardly therefrom or substantially downwardly therefrom in the form of vertical sheds.
