In an exemplary embodiment, the present invention provides an exhaust constituent sensor comprising a planar sensing element securely held in place within a tubular shield by disposing a high temperature mat support between the tubular inner shield and the planar sensing element. The high temperature mat support comprises suitable mat material, e.g., ceramic fibers or metal mesh, and preferably, comprises silica fibers, alumina fibers, alumina fibers with vermiculite, or any other suitable mat material providing the desired support, strength, and thermal and electrical insulating properties described herein. It is within the scope of the invention that the high temperature mat support may be in the form of a fibrous material or a more rigid perform structure, wherein in both instances, the high temperature mat support is adapted to be disposed concentrically around the planar sensing element for secure packaging thereof.

An exhaust management system comprising a catalytic converter having a catalyst operative to reduce HC emissions from a flow of exhaust gas from an automotive internal combustion engine when the catalyst is above a light-off temperature and a heater assembly mounted in the flow of exhaust gas, upstream of the catalyst and exterior of the catalytic converter, wherein the heater assembly includes an electric heater located more than one inch from a front surface of the catalyst.

An apparatus for sensing exhaust gas comprising: first and second tubular passages; a solid plug through which the first and second tubular passages pass and to which the tubular passages are sealingly engaged; a sampling chamber mounted to and in flow contact with the first and second tubular passages, wherein the first tubular passage provides gas flow into the sampling chamber and the second tubular passage takes gas flow out of the sampling chamber; and a flow passage having a tubular wall with an opening therein to which the solid plug is sealingly engaged, wherein the first and second tubular passages extend from inside the flow passage, through the plug, to the sampling chamber mounted outside of the flow passage.
