A hand-held electronic device with a keyboard, thumbwheel, display and associated software is optimized for use of the device with the thumbs. The associated software has a plurality of features to optimize efficient use of the limited keyboard space and encourage the use of the device by thumb-based data entry through the thumbwheel and/or through a combination of minimal number of keystrokes. Software features include international character scrolling, and auto-capitalization. The keys on the device keyboard are optimally shaped and configured for thumb-based input. In addition, the thumbwheel is inclined between the front and a side edge of the device so as to be reachable by either the thumb or index finger of the user's hand at the side edge of the device.

Hand-held electronic device

A hand-held electronic device with a keyboard optimized for use with the thumbs is disclosed. In order to operate within the limited space available on a hand-held electronic device, the present invention optimizes the placement and shape of the keys, preferably using keys that are oval or oblong in shape, and that are placed at angles designed to facilitate thumb-typing. The angles at which keys on either side of the keyboard are placed is complimentary.

A display for a handheld computing device is provided. The device comprises: a display panel; a circuit board carrying display electronics for the display panel; a motherboard; and a resilient layer having a first surface and a second surface, the first surface being adhered to the circuit board, and the second surface adhered to the motherboard, the resilient layer being positioned such that the resilient layer is disposed between the circuit board and the motherboard.

A cover system for a communication device and a case for the communication device are provided. The system comprises: a first cover and a second cover. The first cover has a shape to fit in a recessed region of a case of a communication device, the recessed region bounding a display opening and a speaker opening in the case; a first region adapted to cover the display opening; a second region to enclose the speaker opening; and at least one hole in the second region to provide a conduit through the first cover to the speaker opening. The second cover covers the second region and is shaped to allow ambient air to pass around the second cover to the at least one hole.

A display for a handheld computing device includes a display panel, a display circuit board carrying display electronics for the display panel, and a light guide coupled to the display panel and the display circuit board. The light guide includes at least one snap clip for securing the display to a circuit board of the handheld computing device. The least one snap clip is configured to allow the display to move relative to the computing device when the display panel is mounted to the computing device.

A keyboard includes a plurality of keys associated with alphanumeric characters including the letters A-Z. The keys are split into a left side section and a right side section. The left side section is oriented at least partially above the right side section, or the right side section is oriented at least partially above the left side section. The keyboard is stationary. A mobile communication device includes the keyboard.

A keyboard apparatus includes a group of switches, a key having a corresponding group of plungers, and a chassis structure including a panel and a post. The post projects upward from the panel to support the key for manual movement pivotally into multiple actuated positions in which the plungers actuate the switches. The panel has a group of apertures through which the plungers are movable into actuating engagement with the switches upon such multi-directional movement of the key.

A cover for a display device and a case for a communication device are provided. The cover comprises: external dimensions shaped to fit said cover in a case for said communication device; a top surface; a bottom surface; a non-opaque region adapted to cover said display device allowing a user to see said display device; and a region defining a top of an enclosure cavity for a speaker associated with said communication device. Sound holes in the cover are preferably present. A recess around the region is provided for fitting with a cover for the recess. A communication device comprising the cover is also provided. The case comprises: an exterior frame; a first opening in the frame; an internal wall defined within the exterior frame; a first cavity located in the internal wall; and an air channel to connect the first cavity to a region in the case.

A digital camera is mounted to a circuit-board in a cellphone. The camera is mounted in a plastic main-body, and is supported therein on a bed of springs, which provides a stable resilient mechanical support. The springs double as connector-strips, being electrically-active connector-strips for conducting electrical signals and services between the component and a circuit-board. The connector-strips are solidly attached to the circuit-board, by being soldered thereto. The main-body is not attached directly to the circuit-board, but rather is attached directly to the connector-strips. These measures ensure that the camera is mechanically isolated from the circuit-board whereby, if the cellphone is dropped or knocked, the inertia of the camera does not damage the circuit board.
