In the preferred form, a scanning carriage in a color inkjet printer houses a high resolution printhead for black (or monochrome) printing and one or more lower resolution printheads for color printing. The nozzle arrangements, paper feed increments, and ink drop firing frequency for the black printhead and color printhead(s) are selected to provide various alignments between the larger color ink dots and the smaller black ink dots to achieve maximum ink coverage with a minimum of ink or to achieve additional color shades.

Dot alignment in mixed resolution printer

An inkjet printer is disclosed with mixed print resolution capabilities. The printed dots have a high resolution monochrome component such as black and lower resolution components such as cyan, magenta and yellow. For increased throughput, a higher resolution black printhead has a wider swath. Various alignments between the printheads and printed dots are disclosed. In one embodiment, the top edges of the smaller color printheads are aligned in a scanning carriage at or near the top of the wider black printhead. In other embodiments, the bottom edges of the smaller color printheads are aligned at or near the bottom of the wider black printhead. In another embodiment, the small color printheads are centered with the wider black printhead.

Color inkjet printer

A glide bearing subsystem is described. The invented bearing subsystem includes an expanse having a non-circularly cross-sectional through hole providing in a first, e.g. an upper, region thereof two arcuately spaced planar contact surfaces providing dual parallel lines of contact with a cylindrical rail upon which the carriage is mounted for reciprocal axial movement. A second, e.g. a lower, region of the hole generally opposite and preferably smoothly joining the first hole region is semicylindrical and of slightly greater diameter than that of the rail, thereby controlling inadvertent lift-off of the carriage during acceleration phases of its reciprocal movement along the rail. Preferably, the carriage has a pair of axially spaced bearings formed in generally planar thin expanses of oil-impregnated bronze, which expanses are made by a sintering process and are insert molded integrally with the printer's carriage.

Two-line contact carriage bearing subsystem

An apparatus and method for selecting a vial from a plurality of vials and for transporting the selected vial to a sampling device such as a capillary zone electrophoresis apparatus. The apparatus comprises a removable turret assembly for holding a plurality of vials, a drive for rotating the turret assembly and for aligning a selected vial with the sampling device, and a transport device for transporting the selected vial to the sampling device. The appratus may further comprise a device to supply a cooled gas to the turret assembly, and a control device for controlling the drive and the transport device.

Apparatus for automatic delivery of a vial to an automated sampling

An apparatus for electrophoretic separation comprising a fixed support structure and a cassette shell which is removably attached to the support device. Within the cassette shell is a basket having symmetrically arranged ribs to secure a capillary tube in a helical configuration. The ribs have notches to receive a loop of the helically wound capillary tube. The notches of the ribs alternate in orientation with respect to the axis of the helically wound capillary tube. A quarter-turn locking member provides electrical, optical and coolant fluid communication between the cassette shell and the support device.

Capillary zone electrophoresis cassette

An apparatus for capillary zone electrophoresis having a selectively removable capillary cassette, the internal walls of which define a toroidal capillary region and a gas flow path therethrough. Within the capillary region is housed a helically wound capillary tube having an inlet end and an outlet end. An electrical field is applied across the ends of the tube to cause electrophoretic separation of molecules of a sample. A stream of pressurized gas, preferably air, is channeled through the capillary region for cooling of the tube. The gas flow is a transverse flow and is channeled to avoid differentiation in cooling capacity. The transverse cross-sectional area of the gas flow path is substantially uniform throughout to prevent change in flow velocity. The gas flow path is a generally U-shaped path having a smooth radius turn. In progressing through the capillary region, the stream of gas is caused to flow at an angle relative to the axis of the helix, thereby promoting thermal isolation of succeeding loops of the helically wound capillary tube.
