In one exemplary embodiment of the invention, a method of regenerating an exhaust gas particulate filter in a vehicle having an internal combustion engine is provided. The method includes determining a soot accumulation in the particulate filter, determining a soot humidity and temperature correction factor, and adjusting, using the soot humidity and temperature correction factor, the soot accumulation to determine a corrected soot accumulation in the particulate filter. The method further includes performing a regeneration of the particulate filter when at least one of the following occurs: the corrected soot accumulation reaches a predetermined threshold, and the corrected soot accumulation indicates a contorted soot mass to flow resistance relationship.

An exhaust gas treatment system includes a reductant delivery system configured to introduce a reductant solution to an exhaust gas flowing through the exhaust gas treatment system. A selective catalyst reduction device is configured to chemically react with the reductant solution to induce a NOx conversion that reduces a level of NOx in the exhaust gas. A reductant quality sensor is configured to generate an electrical signal indicating a quality of the reductant solution. The exhaust gas treatment system further includes a rationality diagnostic control module configured to rationalize the reductant quality sensor based on a comparison between the quality of the reductant solution and the NOx conversion.

In one exemplary embodiment of the invention, a method for controlling regeneration for an exhaust system including a particulate filter is provided, where the method includes determining a mass flow rate of oxygen, determining a particulate mass, providing information describing desired set point temperatures corresponding to oxygen mass flow rates and particulate mass values and determining a temperature set point for exhaust gas entering the particulate filter based on the mass flow rate of oxygen, the particulate mass and the information describing desired set point temperatures corresponding to oxygen mass flow rates and particulate mass values. The method further includes communicating a signal to control a parameter for at least one selected from the group consisting of: a hydrocarbon injector, a heating device and a fuel injector configured to provide hydrocarbon post-injection to a cylinder of the internal combustion engine, the controlling based on the determined temperature set point.

System and method for particulate filter regeneration

In one exemplary embodiment of the invention, a method of regenerating a particulate filter includes flowing an exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine into a particulate filter and determining a particulate level in the particulate filter. The method also includes performing a primary regeneration when the particulate level is below a first value, the primary regeneration including flowing exhaust gas with a selected amount of hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas into the particulate filter, and performing a secondary regeneration when the particulate level is above the first value, the secondary regeneration including flowing exhaust gas with an increased amount of nitrogen oxide into the particulate filter.

A control system for an internal combustion engine is provided, and includes an exhaust gas conduit, an oxidization catalyst ('OC') device, a temperature sensor, an intake mass air flow sensor, an engine air intake mechanism, and a control module. The exhaust gas conduit is in fluid communication with, and is configured to receive an exhaust gas. The OC device is in fluid communication with the exhaust gas conduit. The OC device has an OC light-off temperature. The OC device is selectively activated to the light-off temperature to induce oxidization of the exhaust gas. The temperature sensor is situated in the exhaust stream upstream of the OC device. The temperature sensor monitors an exhaust gas temperature. The intake mass air flow sensor measures an air mass entering the internal combustion engine. The engine air intake mechanism is selectively activated to modulate the air mass entering the internal combustion engine.

Control system for modulating an air mass

An engine control system includes a temperature determination module, a reducing agent control module, and a control module. The temperature determination module determines a temperature of a reducing agent injector heated by an exhaust gas. The reducing agent control module actuates the reducing agent injector to inject an amount of reducing agent into the exhaust gas when the temperature is greater than or equal to a temperature threshold. The control module controls a concentration of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas based on the amount of reducing agent injected into the exhaust gas.
