A flow transported obturating tool for actuating a valve in a wellbore includes a housing including a first engagement member and a second engagement member, wherein the first and second engagement members each include an unlocked and a locked position, and a core disposed in the housing, wherein the core is configured to actuate both the first engagement member and the second engagement member between the unlocked and locked positions, wherein, when the first engagement member is in the locked position, the first engagement member is configured to locate the obturating tool at a predetermined axial position in the valve, wherein, when the second engagement member is in the locked position, the second engagement member is configured to shift the valve from an open position to a closed position.

Disclosed is an assembly for disconnecting portions of a downhole tubular string, such as a drill stem or drill string, and removing an upper portion of the tubular string from the lower stuck portion in a well. The disconnect assembly includes a connection between joints of two portions of the tubular string. The assembly includes two tubular members and an inner sleeve having two splines each with different angular pitches or teeth counts. The assembly may include a rotary shouldered threaded connection, wherein the two tubular portions are disconnectable at the rotary shouldered threaded connection in the assembly. The assembly may include a sleeve lock, a selective no-go for landing in a profile, and a selectively deployable unlocking and unblocking tool for activating the assembly. The assembly may include connectable cylindrical members other than downhole tubulars.

A valve for use in a wellbore includes a housing including a housing port, a slidable closure member disposed in a bore of the housing and including a closure member port, and a seal disposed in the housing, wherein the closure member includes a first position in the housing where fluid communication is provided between the closure member port and the housing port, and a second position axially spaced from the first position where fluid communication between the closure member port and the housing port is restricted, wherein, in response to sealing of the bore of the housing by an obturating member sealingly engaging the seal, the closure member is configured to actuate from the first position to the second position.

An illustrative apparatus may include a first perforating gun; an activator responsive to the firing of the first perforating gun and a fuse element detonated by the activator; and a second perforating gun that is fired by the fuse element. An illustrative method for perforating a subterranean formation may include forming a perforating gun train using at least a first perforating gun and a second perforating gun; and energetically coupling the first perforating gun and the second perforating gun with an activator.

An oil well completion tool having a tubular assembly defining an elongated main passage is adapted to be connected to a multiple-section tubing string within an oil well casing. A severable plug is mounted in the tubular assembly in normal blocking relationship to the passage. A movable shear cylinder unit has a plug-severing edge operable to sever an entire central segment of the plug from a remaining peripheral portion thereof. Separate hinge structure has an elongated U-shaped leg portion connected to the central segment of the plug. The leg portion of the hinge structure, which undergoes elongation, is operable to retain the severed central segment of the plug in the main passage while allowing the central segment of the plug to bodily shift independent of and in a direction away from the peripheral portion of the plug. The severed central segment is received in a recess therefor in the tubular assembly wall structure in order to prevent interference of the severed central plug segment with the main passage.

A system and method for a packaging system for the shipment of high explosive components is described. One or more explosive devices are positioned in a tubing assembly having opposed ends and a thick wall of relatively low-density fibrous material, e.g. rolled paper tube. An impact absorbing element is positioned at each end of the tube. The impact absorbing element may include an end cap positioned within each end of the tube, and a cushion formed of partial tubes and an end cap. The complete assembly is sized to fit and be held in position by a standard shipping container. Multiple perforating charges in a tubing assembly may face opposite sides of a charge divider. Shaped charges may have their concave openings filled with a jet interrupter, e.g. sand. Circular charges may include heat releasable fasteners, e.g. nylon screws, which allow the charges to separate in case of fire.

A device and method for selectively controlling the flow of production fluid through a tubing string in an oil and gas well according to which a housing is connected to a tubing string for insertion into the well, and well fluid is passed from the ground surface into the housing. The housing is provided with a plug to establish well fluid pressure in the housing to actuate a packer and/or other ancillary devices. The plug can be removed from the hosing by increasing the pressure of the well fluid in the housing above a predetermined value, thus permitting the flow of production fluid from the formation zone, through the housing and the tubing string, and to the ground surface.

Work strings are lowered into selected assemblies to cause tools carried thereby to sequentially detonate the shaped charges to perforate the zone opposite thereto and to selectively open or close the perforated zones by shifting a sleeve within a housing of the assembly as well as treating the perforated zones.

Apparatus engageable with a well casing for suspending a perforating gun in the casing. The apparatus includes toothed slips forced into engagement with the well casing. A spring maintains an engaging force on the slips with the casing. In response to detonation of the perforating gun, a first release mechanism is operated to allow the perforating gun to drop a short distance. After initial dropping of the perforating gun, a second release mechanism is operated to release the engagement of the toothed slips with the casing, thereby allowing the entire unit to fall to the bottom of the well. A retrieval tool attached to a tubing string can be utilized to operate the second release mechanism, disengage the unit from the casing, and retrieve it from the well.

Well apparatus is disclosed in which a tool is lowered on a pipe string into a well conduit for shifting a sleeve slidably mounted within a tubular housing connected as part of the well conduit. The sleeve has vertically spaced grooves about its inner diameter, and the tool has latches which are selectively moved into and out of engagement with a selected groove in the sleeve in response to the control of the pressure of fluid within the tool. When engaged in a groove, the tool may be raised or lowered with the pipe string to raise or lower the sleeve.

A downhole pressure attenuation apparatus is provided by which the explosive and hydraulic peak pressure and quasi-static pressure pulses generated by perforating gun detonation are attenuated by one or more fluid-free chambers having initially closed vent ports which are opened substantially contemporaneous with gun detonation so as to provide one or more free volume, pressure absorbing cavities. The pressure attenuation apparatus is made up of at least one fluid-free chamber and one or more pressure relief vents. Each pressure relief vent includes at least one charge port assembly having a prestressed port and an explosive filled shaped charge. The number of charge port assemblies used in each vent is determined by the surface area to be opened and the size of the vent chamber. Each of the charge port assemblies of the relief vent is operatively connected to a common explosive filled, detonating cord which forms part of the perforating gun detonating cord, or an extension thereof depending on the location of the pressure attenuating apparatus with respect to the perforating gun or guns. As the detonating cord fires, it causes each of the charge ports to sequentially fire and blow out the prestressed area of each port so as to open one or more vent holes leading to the vent chamber. The amount of explosive in each of the shaped charges of the charge ports is limited so that the detonation of the charge ports in the relief vent does not damage surrounding tubular bodies in the well.
