A virtual reality (VR) headset, system, and method of fabrication are disclosed. The VR headset includes a frame, a transparent display that includes an array of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and a darkening layer having a controllable opacity, and a processor controlling the display and darkening layer. A proximity sensor detects a potential collision, and the opacity is changed from opaque to transparent in response to detection of the potential collision. The opacity is changed in response to activation of a virtual user input or predetermined eye movement.

Transparent microled display for VR headsets

A vehicular display that contains a sparse array of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), system, and method of fabrication are disclosed. The vehicular display includes at least one tile disposed in a vehicle to provide a display of internal and external information. Each tile has a transparent flexible substrate, a sparse array of LEDs disposed on the transparent flexible substrate, a rigid substrate adhered to the transparent flexible substrate via an adhesive layer in which the sparse array of LEDs is encapsulated, and a driver disposed on an edge of the tile and configured to drive the LEDs. The LEDs are sparse enough to enable information to be displayed through a vehicle window while still enabling a viewer to see through the window.

Vehicular sparse led array

A display that contains a sparse array of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), including a related system and method of fabrication are disclosed. The display includes at least one panel disposed in or on a transparent material to provide a display on one or both sides of the material. Each tile has a transparent flexible substrate, a sparse array of LEDs disposed on the transparent flexible substrate, a rigid substrate adhered to the transparent flexible substrate via an adhesive layer in which the sparse array of LEDs is encapsulated, and a driver disposed on an edge of the tile and configured to drive the LEDs. The LEDs are sparse enough to enable information to be displayed through the transparent material while still enabling a viewer to see through the transparent material.

Sparse led array applications

An illumination system can produce a dynamically variable illumination pattern. The illumination system can include a light guide. The illumination system can include projection optics, which can contribute to the illumination pattern at relatively low beam angles (i.e., beam angles formed with respect to a surface normal of the light guide). The projection optics can include individually addressable light-producing elements that can direct light through one or more focusing elements. A controller can control which of the light-producing elements are electrically powered and can therefore control the illumination pattern contribution from the projection optics. The illumination system can also include scattering optics, which can contribute to the illumination pattern at relatively high beam angles. The scattering optics can direct light out of the light guide over a relatively large surface area, which can help reduce glare when the light guide is viewed directly.

Integrated optical system for dynamic diffuse and directional lighting

An apparatus and method for displaying an image are disclosed. The apparatus includes microLED unit cells including sets of microLEDs each emitting light and at least one lens to control an emission angle and emission profile of the light emitted by the microLED unit cells. A display controller controls an intensity distribution of the microLED unit cells in accordance with first and second video data signals such that a first portion of the emitted light is emitted at a first emission angle with a first emission profile at a first observation angle relative to a display and a second portion of the emitted light is emitted at a second emission angle with a second emission profile at a second observation angle relative to the display. The first and second light portions form unrelated images.

Multiview display using microLED technology

A light emitting device comprises a first group of one or more LEDs each configured to emit light having a blue color point in the 1931 CIE x,y Chromaticity Diagram, a second group of one or more LEDs each configured to emit light having a cyan or yellow color point in the 1931 CIE x,y Chromaticity Diagram, and a third group of one or more LEDs each configured to emit light having a red color point in the 1931 CIE x,y Chromaticity Diagram.

LED and phosphor combinations for high luminous efficacy lighting with superior color control

Various embodiments include apparatuses and methods enabling a control apparatus for color tuning a light-emitting diode (LED) array. In one example, a controllable-lighting apparatus includes an LED array having at least one desaturated red LED, at least one desaturated green LED, and at least one desaturated blue LED. A number of color-tuning and luminous-flux control devices includes an adjustable correlated color temperature (CCT)-control device for setting a desired color temperature of the LED array, an adjustable D-control device for setting a desired overall color cast of the LED array along an isothermal CCT line corresponding to the desired color temperature, and an adjustable flux-control device for setting a desired luminous-flux value of the LED array.
