A chain tensioner for an internal-combustion engine comprises a hydraulic piston which is longitudinally guided in a housing bore and on which a tensioning shoe is placed on one side and which, from the direction of the other side, is pressed against the chain by a coil spring. For the damping of chain thrashing, the hydraulic piston is acted upon by hydraulic pressure in the tensioning direction as well as in the opposite direction.

An arrangement and method for the hydraulic tensioning and adjusting of a camshaft chain drive has a chain which winds around both camshafts. Together with its tensioning arrangement, the chain is shifted into its transverse direction. The load end of the chain is thus lengthened, and the loose end of the chain is shortened, or vice versa. Engine oil can be used as the hydraulic fluid. The fluid pressure rises with the rotational engine speed and is used either directly or by way of a control slide valve for adjustment of the tensioning arrangement.

An oil pan, which is made of plastic, has a baffle pot insert on a bottom thereof which is formed by a one piece pot-shaped plastic component. This baffle pot insert extends from the exterior side of the bottom into the oil pan. Further, a collar of the baffle pot insert rests against a bottom section of the oil pan. Screws, which penetrate the collar and are turned into threaded metal inserts of the oil pan, are used for fastening the baffle pot insert to the oil pan.
