A frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar system for level or distance measurement in which a frequency modulated signal to be transmitted to a target is mixed with an echo signal from the target to produce a beat signal that passes through an analog filter before being digitized and processed in a digital processor to determine the level or distance to be measured, where a test signal is generated by a signal generator, and a switch is controlled to connect the beat signal or the test signal to the analog filter, the signal generator generates the test signal as a broadband signal having a periodic waveform, e.g., a square wave, and the digital processor calculates a spectrum of the digitized filtered test signal by Fast Fourier Transform and generates a fault signal if the spectrum differs from a reference spectrum by a predetermined amount to allow for failure detection.

A housing part for a measurement device includes a single metal body having an outer circumferential side wall with an upper end and a lower end and an inner disc-shaped base wall located between the upper and lower ends, wherein the side wall and the base wall define two partially enclosed areas, where the base wall comprises a central hole into which a microwave-permeable glass or ceramic window is fused, microwave guides and dielectric matching elements are provided on both sides of the microwave-permeable or ceramic window to propagate microwaves between the desired points such as a radar antenna and radar electronics, and where the matching elements not only adjust the impedance of the microwave window to the impedances of the microwave guides but also put additional compression stress on the surfaces of the fused window, which are preferably ground flat to be flush with those of the center portion.

A mechanism for coupling a coaxial waveguide to another waveguide. The mechanism includes a lower or matching waveguide and an impedance transformer. A coaxial port couples the coaxial waveguide to the matching waveguide. The matching waveguide has a waveguide impedance which is close to the impedance of the coaxial waveguide. This arrangement allows matching between the coaxial waveguide and the matching waveguide over a wider frequency band. The impedance transformer couples the matching waveguide to the other waveguide. The impedance transformer comprises a single-stage, double-stage, or multi-stage transformer. The mechanism is suitable for coupling an antenna to a coaxial cable interface in a radar or microwave based level measurement or time of flight ranging systems.
