A method of preparing and delivering coal to a coking plant, comprises, conveying the coal to the plant on a moving conveyor while an inert combustion gas is directed over the coal being conveyed. The combustion gas is generated by burning a fuel with air to produce a substantially inert combustion gas which is passed over the coal during its conveying and, thereafter, passed through a cooler for removing the moisture which has been picked up from the coal by the gas. The heating and predrying inert gases are advantageously generated by the direct combustion of air and fuel which are passed through flash dryer tubes and one or more separate separator systems and then delivered into a conveyor pipeline through which the coal is conveyed. A portion of the gases which are generated are also directed with a return gas to a filter for removal of any coal therefrom and to a cooler for removing the moisture picked up from the coal and then back into the stream for delivery to the conveyor for the coal. The inert gas may also be a gas which is circulated in heat exchange relationship with combustion gases which are generated by a combustion of the coal itself. In such a system, a portion of the combustion gases generated are also passed through a condenser or cooler and the cooled and dried waste gases are circulated over the coal being conveyed to the coking oven or its bunkers.

Method of operating a coke oven battery arranged in a battery in connection with a predrying or preheating plant for the coal to be coked comprises predrying and preheating coke oven charge moist coal by bringing it into contact with a circulated current of hot inert gas to remove water from the charge with the inert gas comprising a gas containing only a small amount of oxygen and a remainder comprising nitrogen, carbon dioxide and steam, charging the preheated and predried coal into a coke oven, directing the coke oven gases generated in the oven out through an offtake, and adding an amount of steam corresponding approximately to the amount of water removed from the charge coal during the predrying and preheating to the coke oven gases in the gas offtake. The apparatus includes a closed circuit in which steam is added to a line and then superheated by a heater and is directed into a secondary flash heater. Fine coal is delivered in a moist condition to a primary flash dryer through which the steam is directed after passing through the preliminary flash dryer and coal treated in the primary flash dryer is directed through a separator and then to the secondary flash heater and out of the flash heater to a conduit for charging it into the coke oven chamber. The steam is contained in a closed cycle and after passing through the preliminary flash heater and the primary flash dryer it is circulated after separation back to the heater. Any excess steam is removed and passed through a precipitator.

Method for operating coke oven chambers in connection with a predrying

A regenerator lining for regenerator chamber cells in coke ovens, comprises a stone or brickwork having either a honeycomb or lamellar structure, with a plurality of gas passages extending therethrough and terminating in openings on the top and bottom sides of the structure. The transverse portions or sides are made of frame portions having a material thickness of up to 20mm. The webs or spacing between the openings is up to 10mm in thickness. In the case of circular, hexagonal, or similar shape passages, the openings have diameters of up to 16mm and in a construction which includes a slot formation, the slots are made up to 16mm wide.

Regenerator lining for regenerator chamber cells in coke ovens

The device is positioned in a stack arranged above a location where coke quenching is performed. The coke quenching, which takes place below the stack, evolves steam and gases containing solid coke particles or dust, and which must be prevented from passing into the outside atmosphere. The steam and gases flow upwardly through the stack and the device separates the solid coke particles and dust from the steam and gases. The device comprises a support beam carrying a plurality of shutter-like baffles, of plastic material, and liquid spray elements, and which is variable in length and positioned either obliquely or horizontally across the upper portion of the stack. In between successive coke quenching operations, the liquid spray elements are activated to flush the trapped solid coke particles and dust from the shutter-like baffles. The adjustable length of the device provides for the device to be positioned to extend across the stack at varying angles, or even horizontally. The device may be pivoted at either end of the stack so that it may be swung about the pivot to vary the angle of inclination of the device in the stack, and the adjustable length of the device accommodates the various oblique positions or the horizontal position. The support beam advantageously is supported by a diagonal brace extending from one wall of the stack to the support beam.

The device for pushing incandescent coke out of individual chambers of a coke oven battery which has a plurality of horizontally arranged coke oven chambers, comprises a trackway of spaced apart inboard and outboard tracks which extend along the length of the coke oven battery and a gantry-like carriage which is movable over the trackway and carries the apparatus for pushing the coke out of the individual batteries. The carriage includes inboard legs which are elastically connected to a platform portion which contains the movable ram and other operating parts and outboard legs which are rigidly connected to the platform. The outboard legs also carry contact pressure mechanisms which connect between the legs and the outboard tracks for distributing horizontal stresses to the tracks.

An apparatus for charging coke ovens with coal through filling openings in the coke oven roof comprises a hopper support which advantageously comprises a car undercarriage which is movable into position over an associated filling opening. At least one charging hopper is supported on the support for upward and downward movement and it has a lower end with a discharge connection which is engageable into the filling opening of the coke oven. The support carries a guide for the upward and downward movement of the hopper which is connected to a drive motor in the form of a fluid pressure operated piston and cylinder combination. In one embodiment a compression spring supports the hopper in a fully loaded position and the drive motor which is connected to the hopper must overcome a slight compression force of the spring to move the hopper downwardly to engage the discharge connection into the coke oven opening. In another embodiment the spring pressure does not become effective until a drive connection engages onto a compression spring during the course of its movement with the hopper in a downward direction to further compress the spring toward the end of the downward movement. The construction also includes a separate drive motor for opening and closing a valve in the discharge connection for regulating the discharge of the coke from the hopper into the oven.

A sealing device for a coke oven door comprises first and second spaced apart metal sealing blades having respective substantially aligned sealing edges adapted to extend outwardly from the edge of the coke oven door. A metal spacer is mounted between the first and second sealing blades at a location spaced inwardly from the sealing edges and an elastic sealing strip is located between the two blades and has an outer elastic sealing edge which is substantially in alignment with or projects outwardly slightly beyond the blade sealing edges, and bears against the door frame.

An apparatus for receiving incandescent coke from respective coke ovens of a horizontally arranged battery of coke ovens, comprises a wheeled carriage which is adapted to move backwardly and forwardly along the battery of coke ovens. A coke cake receiving device is mounted on said carriage and includes a hood portion which is adapted to be aligned with each of the coke ovens upon movement of the carriage to the particular coke oven to be discharged and which also includes means for separating contaminants from the gases which are generated from the coke and for discharging purified gases. The coke hood portion has an openable and closable lateral door for receiving the irridescent coke from the associated oven and for closing the hood thereafter. The coke entering the hood is received by a tank arranged below the hood. The tank may be formed so as to provide a closed or sealed connection with the hood portion and it includes engagement means thereon which permits either the tank alone or the tank with the hood portion to be lifted away from the carriage for transport to a separate location for discharge of the coke. When the coke receiving tank is disassociated from the hood, it is engaged with a cover so that it will keep the coke therewithin and prevent gases escaping therefrom during its movement.

A hopper for predried fine coal for use with a coke oven battery or a plurality of batteries arranged in a row, comprises a wheeled support truck which is adapted to be moved along over the top of the oven batteries. A fine coal hopper is mounted on the truck and it includes a bottom discharge to facilitate discharging of the fine coal therethrough into the individual batteries. An inert gas system is connected to the fine coal hopper and it includes an inert gas distributor located alongside the hopper on the truck, and includes nozzles directed at a plurality of locations around the periphery and along the height of the fine coal hopper into the hopper and the fine coal contained therein. The hopper is closed by a hood which includes a hood drain connected through an inert gas return line to a plurality of filters where the coarse particles are removed and fed to a source for using the coarse coal particles and the inert gases are again returned to a compressor, along with a fresh supply of inert gases, which discharges into a pressure storage tank. The pressure storage tank is connected through an inert gas feedline to the distributor. In one embodiment, the inert gas feed and return line comprises an extensible, flexible connection, which is effected by the use of a small wheeled carriage containing a windup reel which moves inwardly and outwardly in respect to the fine coal hopper to accommodate the slack between the hopper and the inert gas system which is located at a fixed station. In another embodiment, the inert gas system, which includes filters for filtering the return inert gases, and a compressor for compressing the gases along with a fresh supply of inert gas and delivering it to a pressure storage tank mounted on a carriage which also moves along with the hopper and is coupled to the hopper truck.

A coke oven discharge device for the closed discharge of coke from a horizontal row of coke ovens into a receiving bunker located alongside the ovens comprises a support frame which is mounted on an undercarriage for movement along a path alongside the rows of coke ovens. The tank is made up of a plurality of heat resistant metal plates which are suspended in loosely adjacent layers from strips and they overlap their adjacent plates. The tank includes a bottom with openable door means for selectively opening and closing a bottom discharge for discharging the coke into a receiving bunker. A separator and washer is connected to the tank for withdrawing gaseous dust and odors and for subjecting them to a washing and a removal of the dust. The tank carries a sealing sleeve which is engageable between the exterior of the tank around the bottom discharge and a bunker to seal the space therebetween during the discharge.
