A grate bar has an elongated top wall, two longitudinally extending sidewalls, transversely extending front and rear walls, a bottom wall, and several longitudinally extending ribs at the underside of the top wall. The walls define an air heating chamber which receives fresh air from a first opening below the rar wall and discharges heated air by way of a second opening which is provided in one of the sidewalls close to the front wall. The ribs divide the chamber into several elongated channels and a compartment which is located immediately behind the front wall and communicates with the channels as well as with the second opening. At least one of the ribs which are nearest to the one sidewall is spaced apart from the bottom wall so that the channels which flank such rib can communicate with one another along the upper side of the bottom wall. Any solid particles which descend onto the bottom wall by entering the chamber via the second opening are free to travel rearwardly and to leave the channels by way of the first opening. Such evacuation can be promoted by providing some of the ribs with apertures which allow for communication between neighboring channels and/or by inclining the foremost portion of the bottom wall downwardly and rearwardly so that such foremost portion and the adjacent portion of the bottom wall define an additional opening and the foremost portion constitutes a chute for evacuation of solid particles by way of the additional opening.

Grate bar for use in industrial furnaces

A combustion apparatus has a combustion chamber which is divided into combustion zones respectively communicating with individual mixing zones in a mixing chamber. Combustion air enters the mixing zones and then flows into the combustion zones. The concentration of NO.sub.x in the combustion products of each of the combustion zones is measured and water vapor is fed into each mixing zone in an amount which depends upon the NO.sub.x concentration for the corresponding combustion zone. The amount of water vapor fed into a mixing zone is such as to maintain the combustion temperature below a value at which substantial quantities of NO.sub.x are formed. The water vapor is fed into the mixing zones generally countercurrent to the combustion air entering the combustion zones and the water vapor and combustion air flow into the combustion zones together.

Method and arrangement for reducing NO.sub.x emissions from furnaces

A grate bar for a furnace grate lining is disclosed. The grate exhibits lateral contact surfaces and external ribs on its lower side in the vicinity of the contact surfaces. At least one jet-like air channel is in part formed by a recess in at least one lateral contact surface between adjoining grate bars.

Grate bar for grate linings, especially in furnaces

A grate for use in industrial furnaces has a frame which supports a number of elongated parallel grate bars having a T-shaped or U-shaped cross-sectional outline. One end portion of each bar has a socket which overlies a portion of an elongated rail forming part of or secured to the frame. The other end portions or the regions close to the other end portions of the bars are coupled to each other by a transverse shaft which holds the bars against movement at right angles to their longitudinal extensions and away from the frame. A second coupling system is provided close to the end portion of each bar to hold the bars against movement in the aforementioned direction. The second coupling system may include lateral projections provided on the bars and extending below or into openings of the neighboring bars. Alternatively, the second coupling system may include locking bolts which are affixed to or movable transversely of alternate bars and extend below or into openings of one or both neighboring bars. A single locking bolt can extend through openings in the lower portions of all bars. Alternate bars and eventually the coupling shaft and/or corresponding portions of the second coupling system are preferably reciprocable lengthwise of the remaining bars to allow for convenient expulsion of particles of foreign matter which happen to penetrate into the clearances between neighboring bars.

Grate for industrial furnaces

A grate for industrial furnaces wherein each row of grate bars includes alternating stationary and reciprocable bars. The stationary bars which flank a reciprocable bar are connected to each other by a bolt which extends transversely of the stationary bars and of the reciprocable bar therebetween and has hook-shaped end portions or screws engaging the inner sides of ribs forming part of the stationary bars and adjacent to the respective side of the reciprocable bar. The median portion of the bolt extends through elongated slots in the ribs which are provided at the underside of the reciprocable bar. The latter moves with respect to the bolt and with respect to the adjacent stationary bars.

A grate wherein several steps of alternating partly overlapping mobile and stationary grate bars are adjacent to a compensating device which expands or contracts to compensate for heat-induced variations of the width of adjacent steps. The compensating device supports or is adjacent to a sealing device having auxiliary bars which abut against the side faces of adjacent mobile grate bars and abut against the top faces of adjacent stationary grate bars. The side faces of the stationary bars are separated from the sealing device and from the compensating device by permanent clearances which are overlapped by the auxiliary bars. The auxiliary bars rest on the stationary bars and are biased against the side faces of the respective mobile bars by weights or springs of the compensating device.

Grate with compensating means for use in industrial furnaces

A device for feeding bagged refuse into furnaces for incineration purposes has a chute defining a charging path, and ripping and/or slitting instrumentalities along this path for opening up the bags so as to permit the refuse to leave the same during travel of the bags along the charging path towards the combustion chamber.

Charging device for furnaces

A moisture-containing viscous secondary fuel is combusted in the chamber of an industrial furnace by comminuting the secondary fuel to a particle size of 5-50 mm and propelling the particles at an initial speed of 1-10 m/sec. onto a layer of intensely burning primary fuel, such as solid refuse, coal or wood. The particles are propelled from a level at 0.5-2 m above the burning layer and in such a way that the length of their flight spans is 0.2-2 m. This insures that the particles retain moisture during travel in the combustion chamber and do not agglomerate prior and/or subsequent to contacting the burning layer of primary fuel. The rate of admission of comminuted secondary fuel is regulated in dependency on changes of temperature in the chamber, in dependency on changes of the CO.sub.2 or O.sub.2 content of combustion products and/or in dependency on variations of a parameter (e.g., length) of the burning layer of primary fuel.

Method and furnace for combustion of primary fuels with moisture

Apparatus which compensates for thermally induced changes in the width of gaps between longitudinally extending marginal portions of grate sections in industrial furnaces has two rows of plate-like cheeks which abut against the marginal portions of neighboring sections and can swivel on fulcra defined by the webs of inverted U-shaped supporting devices whose legs are turnable about pivots mounted in a frame and extending in parallelism with the marginal portions of grate sections. The cheeks are urged away from each other and against the marginal portions of neighboring grate sections by pairs of two-armed levers mounted on a common shaft which is biased downwardly by a package of dished springs through the medium of a pull rod. The cheeks of each row are secured to plate-like carriers which are disposed between the respective rows of cheeks and the corresponding arms of the levers and are swingable on the associated fulcra. The upper portions of cheeks which face each other define orifices for discharge of heated or cooling gases into the spaces above the neighboring grate sections.

Apparatus for compensating for thermally induced deformation of sections

Apparatus for processing slag, which is quenched in a liquid-containing vessel, has a forwardly and upwardly sloping chute receiving batches of quenched slag through the medium of a first pusher which is reciprocable along the bottom of the vessel whereby the chute accumulates a column of slag which overflows at the discharge end of the chute. The overflowing slag descends onto the upper side of a first forwardly and upwardly inclined bottom wall in front of a second reciprocable pusher which performs a forward stroke when the first pusher performs a return stroke and vice versa. The second pusher spreads and advances the slag toward and beyond the discharge end of the first bottom wall so that the slag descends onto a second bottom wall which is swept by a third reciprocable pusher. Liquid which is entrained by slag leaving the quenching vessel is permitted to flow rearwardly and downwardly along the bottom of the chute as well as along the two bottom walls so that the material which overflows the second bottom wall is practically free of liquid. Smaller particles of slag which remain entrapped in the liquid descend onto the second bottom wall and are swept rearwardly and downwardly by one or more scrapers which are reciprocated by the third pusher and are lifted off the second bottom wall during forward movement of the third pusher.

Apparatus for the processing of slag

An apparatus for discharging cinders from an incinerator has an upwardly open intake pit having horizontally spaced front and rear walls. A water-filled trough is provided below this intake pit and has an upwardly concave floor and defines an upwardly extending outlet for cinders which have been quenched after they have dropped down in the pit into the water in the trough. A stepped plunger has a front face slidable in an arcuate path along the floor of the trough between a retracted position relatively close to the front wall defining the pit and an advanced position relatively far from the front wall. This plunger also has an upper surface on which is provided a step having a face which lies in back of the front wall in the retracted position of the plunger and between the walls in the advanced position. Thus as the plunger is advanced from the retracted to the advanced position the step pushes large objects against the rear wall of the pit and compresses these large objects. In addition, this step is inclined so as to exert a downward component of force on material in the pit and press it against the floor of the trough.

Apparatus for discharging cinders from an incinerator

An assembly of coaxial rotor units which form part of a grate in an industrial furnace and serve to transport as well as to admit air to solid fuel in uncombusted and/or at least partially combusted state. Each rotor unit has a shell which is assembled of heat-resistant fuel-contacting rings and has gaps for discharge of air into fuel, a hollow core which is received in and rotates with the shell and whose cylindrical wall has apertures for admission of air into compartments disposed between the shell and the core and communicating with the gaps between the rings. The end walls of the core rotate with or relative to trunnions at least one of which admits air into the core so that such air flows through the apertures of the cylindrical wall, into the compartments and issues via gaps to contact the fuel. The core can receive a cylindrical drum which has a peripheral helix or discrete distancing projections and serves to regulate the flow of air along the inner surface of the cylindrical wall so that the cooling of core is more pronounced in regions which are nearer to fuel. The rings of the shell are assembled of heat-resistant segments which are fastened to the cylindrical wall of the core.
