An integrated semiconductor device including a directional optoelectronic coupler, which coupler comprises two parallel single-mode rectilinear optical waveguides over a total length D, separated by a small distance d, which coupler also comprises four electrodes of the same conductivity type, two on each waveguide, and at least one other electrode of the opposite conductivity type, characterized in that the coupler has an operation which is independent of the transverse electrical and transverse magnetic radiation components, TE and TM, respectively, present in random proportions in the incoming signal, under the condition in which the structural parameters of the coupler render it possible to ensure that the following relations are true: ##EQU1## In which relations: Z is the dimension of each electrode on the waveguides,

Semiconductor device comprising a directional coupler for the TE and TM

A ball lens connector part having low total reflections as well as a method of manufacturing such a ball lens connector part are described. The total reflections can be limited to less than -60 dB by means of the present ball lens connector part. The ball lens connector part comprises a fiber with an inclined fiber end in a tubular housing which housing further comprises a ball lens. If the ball lens comprises a flat surface, the total reflections can be lower than -80 dB. By subjecting the end of the housing to a machining treatment, the center line of the said end is moved in such a manner that it coincides with the optical axis of the emanating light beam.

Low-reflection ball lens connector part

Grooves are etched in a glass substrate, using a metallic mask, after which the substrate is coated with a layer of glass having a refractive index which is higher than that of the substrate, the groove being filled completely. Excess glass is removed, the metallic mask being used as a stop layer and a protective layer being provided at the location of the filled grooves. Excess glass is removed at the location of the grooves by means of polishing so that a high accuracy as regards depth can be obtained.

Method of manufacturing a planar optical component

A method of manufacturing lens elements, in which a glass preform heated to the softening temperature and an annular metal holder (3) enclosing the glass preform are arranged between the heated moulding dies (7,9) of a mould and are moulded in a pressing step into a lens element comprising a glass lens (21) and a ring (3) enclosing the glass lens and acting as a fitting. During moulding, the ring 3 forms together with the two dies (7,9) a quasi closed moulding cavity having an annular gap (15). During moulding, the ring (3) is expanded radially and a quantity of glass is pressed.
