A power transmitter () for a wireless power transfer system comprises a transmitter coil () and a driver () generates a drive signal for the transmitter coil () employing a repeating time frame with a power transfer time interval and a foreign object detection time interval. A test generator () generates a test drive signal for a test coil () during the foreign object detection time interval. A foreign object detector () performs a foreign object detection test based on a measured parameter for the test drive signal. Prior to entering a power transfer phase, an adapter () controls the power transmitter () to operate in a foreign object detection initialization mode in which a preferred value of a signal parameter for the test drive signal is determined in response to at least a first message received from the power receiver (). During the foreign object detection time interval the signal parameter of is set to the preferred value.

Foreign object detection in a wireless power transfer system

A thermal barrier for a wireless power transfer system comprises a first surface area () for coupling to a power receiver () to be powered by a first electromagnetic signal and a second surface area () for coupling to a power transmitter () providing a second electromagnetic signal. The thermal barrier () further comprises a power repeater () with a resonance circuit including an inductor and a capacitor. The power repeater () is arranged to generate the first electromagnetic signal by concentrating energy of the second electromagnetic signal towards the first surface area (). The thermal barrier may provide thermal protection of the power transmitter () without unacceptable impact on the power transfer operation.

A wireless power transfer system comprises a power transmitter () arranged to generate a wireless inductive power transfer signal for powering a power receiver (). The system comprises a temperature controlled power loop setting an operating temperature for a heating part of a powered device. The system further comprises a receiver () for receiving a first temperature for a part of a powered device where the powered device is powered by the power receiver (). A comparator () compares the measured temperature to a first reference temperature associated with the power transmitter (). In response to the first temperature exceeding the reference temperature, a controller () proceeds to restrict the power of the power transfer signal and/or to generate a user alert. The first temperature may specifically relate to a contact surface of the powered device and the reference temperature may be a maximum allowable temperature of a contact surface for receiving the powered device during power transfer.

A record carrier of a disc-like optically inscribable type, has a preformed track in which an auxiliary signal including a sequence of codes recorded by a preformed track modulation. The codes include a sequence of address codes specifying the addresses of the track portions in which the address codes are recorded and special codes. The special codes can be distinguished from the address codes and specify control data for controlling a recording by a recording device. The record carrier is provided with an extended area preceding a program calibration area. The extended area includes special codes representing additional control information for controlling the recording.
