A glass fiber-filled poly(arylene ether)/polyamide composition exhibits reduced die build-up during profile extrusion. The composition includes specific amounts of polyamide, poly(arylene ether), glass fibers, and polypropylene. The reduced die build-up means that the profile extrusion equipment needs to be shut down and cleaned less often, resulting in a substantial productivity improvement.

Profile extrusion method, article, and composition

A profile extrusion method utilizes a specific poly(arylene ether)/polystyrene composition with little or no unhydrogenated poly(conjugated diene) rubber. The method substantially reduces the amount of die lip build-up during continuous profile extrusion for eight hours or more. Reduction of die lip build-up in turn improves the structural integrity and aesthetic properties of the extruded article.

Excellent physical properties and reduced dust formation are exhibited by thermoplastic compositions comprising a poly(arylene ether); a polystyrene; a metal hydroxide; and optionally, a rubber material. The thermoplastic compositions are particularly useful for molding automobile interior parts.

Poly(arylene ether)-polystyrene composition

A method for electrostatic painting (coating) of a non-conductive compatibilized poly(arylene ether)/polyamide polymer surface is disclosed, comprising applying a conductive layer on or adjacent to all or part of a side opposite the non-conductive polymer surface to be painted so as to provide sufficient conductivity to enable electrostatic painting of the non-conductive polymer surface. With the conductive layer in place the article can then be painted electrostatically. After painting, the conductive layer can optionally be removed without affecting the painted surface.

Reduced emissions of styrene and butanal are exhibited by thermoplastic compositions comprising poly(arylene ether), a polystyrene resin, optionally rubber, and an activated carbon derived from vegetable matter. The thermoplastic compositions are particularly useful for molding automobile interior parts.

A process for preparing a polymer composition useful as a prepreg comprises (a) melt-mixing at least one thermoplastic polymer above the glass transition temperature or melt temperature of the thermoplastic polymer with either (i) an uncured epoxy resin or (ii) an epoxy curing agent or a catalyst; (b) melt-mixing above the glass transition temperature or melt temperature of the thermoplastic polymer, the other of (i) an uncured epoxy resin or (ii) an epoxy curing agent or a catalyst to form a substantially uncured but essentially curable and/or polymerizable composition; (c) optionally forming a shaped product from the melt-mixed composition of (b); and (d) fast-curing and/or fast-polymerizing the optionally formed shaped product.
