An expansive smoke configuration can be produced manually or automatically by the rapid, repeated discharge of smoke-forming liquid jets. A suitable device consists essentially of one or several movable tubes, each equipped with a nozzle, in conjunction with cartridges occupying the entire tube volume and having a liquid chamber and a propellant charge chamber. In case of two-component smokes, cartridges filled respectively with the two components (N1, N2) are fired in alternation. The device lends itself very well to automatic operation.

Device for the rapid producion of large-area smoke screens

A device for firing ammunition includes a combustion chamber accommodating several propellant charge members which latter contain a propellant charge and an ignition system for igniting the propellant charge. A fixedly disposed primary coil which receives an ignition signal is provided at the combustion chamber while a secondary coil is arranged in each propellant charge member, this secondary coil being connected to a resistor initiating the ignition system. The magnetic field, changing with time, which is produced by the primary coil penetrates the combustion chamber and induces a current in the secondary coils of each propellant charge member at the same time so that the ignition systems of all propellant charge members are simultaneously activated and ignite all propellant charges at once. On account of the simultaneous ignition of the propellant charge members, rapid firing sequences can be attained.

Device for firing ammunition

Unsupported, compressed propellant charge elements of nitrocellulose grains, as well as propellant charges produced from these propellant charge elements are produced by coating the grains with an acrylate resin and shaping the grains into cylindrical elements. The novel propellant charge elements are manufactured practically without concomitant use of binders or adhesives; they have a cylindrical configuration and contain a coaxial, continuous bore. These elements are suitable as building blocks for propellant charges in ammunition, e.g., for machinegun-type cannons. These building blocks can be used in a very simple form economically directly for the manufacturing of such ammunition. These novel charges contain at least three of the novel propellant charge elements; in this connection, the combustion of these charges can be adjusted at will by varying the propellant charge elements in order to obtain optimum combustion properties.

Unsupported propellant charge element and compact charge produced

A propellant charge composition comprising individual powder particles of a nitrocellulose propellant coated with a coating of an acrylic resin and a process for its preparation. Also disclosed is a propellant charge composition of the type described containing a second propellant.
