The invention provides an image projection system including a first light source and a second light source. Light from the first light source is limited to a finite number of limited wavelength intervals. An imaging device is adapted for modulating light from the first and second light sources. A beam combiner is provided to combine light from the light sources and direct the combined light to the imaging device. Modulated light from the imaging device is directed to a lens.

System for projecting an image using narrow band light sources

Methods for filtering particles from a fluid are disclosed, wherein an array of microstructures defining respective microchannels having respective minimum widths are used to separate the fluid from particles to be filtered. The fluid flows through the minimum widths into the microchannels defined between adjacent microstructures. The particles to be filtered are prevented from passing through the respective minimum widths, resulting in filtration of those particles from the fluid. The microchannels can be provided with gradient characteristics to separate particles in the fluid according to size.

A sample substrate adapted for use with electromagnetic excitation light includes a base and a layer system. The layer system includes a multilayer interference coating with at least two layers wherein the thicknesses of the layers ensure that light emitted by a fluorescent sample material disposed on top of said multilayer interference coating is reflected. Light directed to a fluorescent sample material disposed on the substrate causes light to be emitted from the sample. The layer system includes a multilayer interference coating with at least two layers wherein thicknesses of the layers cause separation of the excitation light from the emitted light.

A waveguide plate and a process for making the waveguide plate with a plate-like glass substrate (), carrying a waveguiding layer (), with at least one coupling grating on the surface carrying said waveguiding layer (), which coupling grating is formed as a grating of lines with a period between 150 nm and 1000 nm, the extension of said grating being at least 5 cm with lines parallel to one another, wherein the coupling angle (&#x3b8;) varies by not more than 0.1&#xb0;/cm along a line of said grating and wherein the absolute value of the deviation of the coupling angle (&#x3b8;) on said waveguide plate, from a predefined desired value, does not exceed 0.5&#xb0;. The deviation from the average value of the coupling angle does not exceed 0.3&#xb0;, preferably not 0.15&#xb0; on the whole waveguide plate. The waveguide plate is suitable as part of a sensor platform and of an arrangement of sample compartments for chemo-and bioanalytical investigations in order to produce a coupling grating formed as a line grating with a grating period between 100 nm and 2500 nm.

A method and apparatus or configuration generates light of a given polarization state (P). A polarization state-sensitive beam splitter is acted upon by light (L) at an input (E), light (L) of the given polarization state being output by the beam splitter () at a first beam splitter output (A). Light (L) with polarization state (S) that is perpendicular to the given state (P) is changed with respect to this state and also output. The light of the changed polarization state again acts upon the polarization state-sensitive beam splitter at the input (E). The apparatus or configuration achieves this by having the optic input (E) of a polarization state-changing structural element whose optic output (A) is operationally connected to the optic input (E) of the polarization state-sensitive beam splitter, operationally connected to the second optic output (A).

An optical component or an analytical platform includes a substrate, an array of microstructures on the substrate and microchannels formed by side walls of adjacent microstructures, a width of the microchannels varies as a function of distance to the substrate, the width continuously decreasing with increasing distance from the substrate within at least one distance-interval. In a method for producing such a component or such a platform a substrate with an array of surface microstructures is coated in a vapor treatment in such a way that shadowing effects of the coating mechanism narrow at least partially a width of the upper parts of side walls of the microstructures thereby forming at least partially embedded microchannels.

An optical waveguide has a substrate with a surface of organic material, an inorganic material waveguide layer along the surface of organic material with a waveguide layer surface pointing toward the surface of organic material and an organic/inorganic material interface between the surface of organic material and the waveguide layer surface. The organic/inorganic interface is remote from the waveguide layer surface and is formed by the surface of organic material and a surface of an intermediate spacer system of inorganic material. A method for manufacturing an optical device provides at least two sub-bodies of a base body and, at each sub-body, a surface so that the surfaces are complementary to each other and snugly fit on one another. Along at least one of the complementary surfaces, a first optical layer system is defined. The sub-bodies are joined along the complementary surfaces so as to embed the optical layer system between them and thus forming an assembled sub-body. Machining a continuous surface on the assembled sub-body and at a predetermined angle to the complementary surfaces and the embedded layer system then takes place, where the latter abut at the machined continuous surface. A second layer system is then provided along the continuous surface.

A coupling grating formed as a line grating with a grating period between 100 nm and 2500 nm, a substrate () is covered with a photoresist layer () and exposed for instance at the Lithrow angle (&#x398;) or at 0&#xb0; to a mercury-vapour lamp () via a folding mirror (') through a phase mask () in the near field of which the photoresist layer is arranged, then structured by reactive ion etching and provided with a transparent layer by reactive DC magnetron sputtering, particularly pulsed DC sputtering or AC-superimposed DC sputtering. The phase mask () is structured in advance with the laser two-beam interference method. The process is particularly suited for the production of optical elements, particularly evane-scent field sensor plates and optical couplers for communications technology which can be employed in particular as filters for wavelength multiplexing in fibre-optic networks.
