A power converter for compensating voltage variation in a circuit, the circuit comprising: a power stage arranged for receiving a mains input and for converting the mains input into a direct current, DC, output for driving a load; and a first buffer capacitor connected in a parallel branch with the load; wherein the power converter comprises an output capacitor connected in series with the first buffer capacitor, wherein the output capacitor is arranged for connecting in series with the first buffer capacitor in said parallel branch with the load; wherein the power converter comprises a second buffer capacitor arranged for connecting in series with the first buffer capacitor; and wherein the power converter is configured to charge the output capacitor from the second buffer capacitor, when the DC output is below a predetermined threshold.

Low power converter for compensating mains voltage variation

The invention relates to a surge detector comprising a transformer comprising a primary winding arranged to receive a fraction of a surge current and a secondary winding magnetically coupled to the primary winding and arranged to output a signal representing the fraction of the surge current. The surge detector further comprises a shunt connection in parallel with the primary winding, wherein the impedance of the shunt connection is lower than the impedance of the primary winding.

A circuit is provided for energy metering and surge current detection. It uses a current transformer. A first current sensing arrangement is connected to the secondary side of the transformer for energy metering and a second current sensing arrangement is connected to the secondary side, with a high pass filter, for surge current detection. A single component is thus able to provide energy metering and surge detection.

A lighting driver () for driving at least one lighting device () includes a control unit () disposed on a first side of an electrical isolation barrier (), and a power supply unit () disposed on a second side of the electrical isolation barrier so as to be electrically isolated from the control unit. The control unit supplies a single enable signal () across the electrical isolation barrier to the power supply unit. The power supply unit includes a switching circuit (S/S) configured to selectively enable and disable, in response to the single enable signal, two output voltages for supplying power to an external device () which communicates data with the lighting driver.
