A new approach for improving fire resistance of cellulosic materials is provided, especially when the cellulosic material is to be used in polymer composites. Cellulosic material is treated with an aqueous mixture of alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide and alkaline earth or aluminum metal salt simultaneously with or within a short period of time of preparing the mixture. The treated cellulosic material becomes self-extinguishing and may also have improved thermal stability, improved interfacial thermal resistance, improved resistance to damage by oxidants and other chemical agents, improved resistance to biological agents and/or improved resistance to damage by ultra-violet light.

Fire-resistant cellulosic material

The present invention provides a primer for a thermoplastic and/or elastomeric substrate, the primer comprising a film of an epoxy-modified polymer selected from the group consisting of an epoxy-modified-thermoplastic polymer, an epoxy-modified-thermoplastic polymeric composite, an epoxy-modified-elastomeric polymer, an epoxy-modified-elastomeric polymeric composite, a blend thereof, and any mixture thereof. Also provided are methods of repairing, inserting, assembling and coating a thermoplastic or elastomeric substrate using the primer of the present invention.

Primer composition and uses thereof

The present invention provides a hot-melt adhesive composition comprising a blend of: a reactive filler comprising an aluminum compound, a magnesium compound, a calcium compound, a barium compound or a mixture thereof; and, a grafted polyolefin having a functional group for reaction with the reactive filler. Such a hot-melt adhesive is particularly useful for bonding a polyolefin-based substrate to dissimilar materials such as metals, wood, ceramics and thermoset plastics.

Disclosed is a nanocomposite comprising a nano-reinforcing material (e.g., layered clay), a polymer matrix (e.g., a polyolefin), and, an epoxy-functionalized graft polymer compatible with the polymer matrix (e.g., epoxy-grafted polyolefin). Such nanocomposites are useful in the fabrication of a variety of materials including parts for the transportation and packaging industries, electronics, business equipment, building and construction materials.

The present invention provides a thermoplastic composite comprising: a polyolefin; a cellulosic filler; a carboxylic acid and/or carboxylic acid anhydride graft polyolefin having an acid number greater than 15 mgKOH/g; and, a basic reactive filler present in an amount of 5&#x2013;25 wt %, based on the weight of the composite. Such composites may be used in structural and non-structural applications and exhibit improved mechanical properties, thermal properties and/or resistance to biological degradation.
