The invention relates to a thermoplastic molding material of an elastomeric polymer A, a shell B grafted to the polymer A, and a copolymer C as rigid matrix. The amount of polymer A is 1 to 25 percent by weight based on the weight of A+B+C. It has a glass transition temperature, Tg, of less than 0.degree. C. and an average particle size of 200 to 750 nanometers (d.sub.50 value of the integral mass distribution) and is composed of: 50 to 99.9 percent by weight of at least one alkylacrylate with 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical and 0.1 to 5 percent by weight of a polyfunctional monomer which has a crosslinking action. Thermoplastic molding materials contain a blend of a polyphenylene ether with a copolymer which consists of monovinyl-aromatic monomers, alkyl methacrylates where alkyl is of not more than 8 carbon atoms and, if required, an elastomer component having a glass transition temperature of .ltoreq.0.degree. C.

Polyphenylene ethers are prepared from monohydric phenols, which possess alkyl substituents in the two ortho-positions and, if desired, in the meta-position, but not in the para-position, by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen at from 15.degree. to 50.degree. C. and under from 1 to 10 bar in the presence of a catalyst complex, of a solvent and, if required, of an activator, by a method in which the conversion of the phenols is carried out in two more reaction zones, in which some or all of the solvent, the catalyst complex and the phenols and, where relevant, the activator is initially taken and is circulated by means of a conveying unit, and about 60-100% of the stoichiometric amount of oxygen required for the oxidative coupling is introduced into the first reaction zone and from 0 to about 40% of the said stoichiometric amount is introduced into the second reaction zone.

Preparation of polyphenylene ethers, and an apparatus for this purpose

The catalyst is removed in the preparation of high molecular weight polyphenylene ethers from monohydric phenols, which are alkyl-substituted at the two ortho-positions but not at the para-position and may or may not be alkyl-substituted at the meta-position, by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen at from 15.degree. to 50.degree. C. in the presence of a catalyst complex obtained from a copper salt and an organic amine, in the presence of from 1 to 20 parts by weight of a solvent per part by weight of the monomeric phenol, and in the presence or absence of an activator, and removal of the metal component of the catalyst from the polyphenylene ether solution with a complex-forming or chelate-forming compound in aqueous solution, in the presence or absence of reducing and stabilizing substances and assistants for accelerating the interphase reactions and for phase separation, by a method in which the continuous removal of the copper catalyst is carried out in one or more mixer-settler stages at a phase volume ratio of the organic phase to the aqueous phase of from 1:0.1 to 1:1.0, preferably from 1:0.4 to 1:0.6.

A halogen-free flameproofed thermoplastic molding material consists of a halogen-free thermoplastic resin (A) and one or more further halogen-free components. The thermoplastic resin (A) is present in an amount of from 30 to 90% by weight, based on the molding material. The latter contains, as further components, from 1 to 50% by weight of a phenol/aldehyde resin (B), from 1 to 50% by weight of a nitrogen-containing organic compound (C) and from 3 to 50% by weight of a phosphorus-containing organic compound (D), the percentages in each case being based on the molding material. The molding material is used for the production of flameproofed moldings.

Halogen-free flameproofed thermoplastic molding material

High molecular weight polyphenylene ethers are prepared from monohydric phenols by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen in the presence of a solvent and of a catalyst complex consisting of a copper salt and an organic amine of the general formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 -alkylidene, preferably C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 -alkylidene, or alkenylidene, R.sup.2 is H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl, preferably C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, or C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, each of which is unsubstituted or substituted by functional groups, and n is an integer from 1 to 4, preferably 1 or 2. Preferred functional groups are --OR.sup.3, --NHR.sup.3 or --SR.sup.3, in which R.sup.3 is H C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl or C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, and the most suitable amines are 3-tert.-butoxypropylamine, 4-tert.-butoxybutylamine, 3-tert.-butoxy-2-methylpropylamine, 3-tert.-butoxy-2,3-dimethylpropylamine, 3-tert.-butoxy-2-methyloctylamine and N-methyl-N-(4-tert.-butoxybutyl)-amine. The polyphenylene ethers can be processed to moldings by a thermoplastic method.

Preparation of polyphenylene ethers

A thermoplastic molding material consists of from 10 to 90 parts by weight of a polycarbonate A and from 90 to 10 parts by weight of a graft copolymer B having a mean particle size of from 200 to 700 nm (d.sub.50 value of the integral mass distribution). The graft polymer B is formed from an elastomer (rubber) (b.sub.1), which accounts for from 10 to 80% by weight, and a grafted shell (b.sub.2), which accounts for from 90 to 20% by weight, the percentages in each case being based on (B). The elastomer (b.sub.1) is composed of from 50 to 99.9% by weight of an alkyl acrylate, where alkyl is of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, and from 0.1 to 5% by weight of a copolymerizable polyfunctional crosslinking monomer. Thermoplastic molding materials contain a blend of a polyphenylene ether with a copolymer which consists of monovinyl-aromatic monomers, alkyl acrylates where alkyl is of not more than 8 carbon atoms and, if required, an elastomer component having a glass transition temperature of .ltoreq.0.degree. C.

A thermoplastic molding material consists of a polycarbonate A and a graft copolymer B, the latter consisting of an elastomer (rubber) (b.sub.1) and a shell (b.sub.2) grafted onto the elastomer. The elastomer (b.sub.1) contains, as copolymerized units, from 35 to 100% by weight of a diene from the group consisting of the conjugated dienes of 4 to 5 carbon atoms, and can contain, as copolymerized units, from 0 to 65% by weight of a monomer from the group consisting of the alkyl acrylates or alkyl methacrylates, where alkyl is of 1 to 8 carbon atoms. The shell (b.sub.2) is obtained in a conventional manner by successive polymerization of the monomers constituting the shell, in two process steps, in the presence of the elastomer (b.sub.1); in a first process step, from 10 to 90% by weight of a mixture of a vinylaromatic hydrocarbon and one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers which differ from the said hydrocarbon, in a weight ratio of from 90:10 to 60:40, are first incorporated as copolymerized units, followed by the polymerization of from 90 to 10% by weight of a monomer from the group consisting of the alkyl acrylates or of the alkyl methacrylates, where alkyl is of 1 to 8 carbon atoms. The molding material is used for the production of shaped articles.

High molecular weight polyphenylene ethers are prepared from a monohydric phenol by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst complex obtained from a copper salt and an organic amine, and in the presence of a solvent, by a process in which the metal component of the catalyst is removed after the polymerization by adding one or more organic ammonium salts of the general formula ##STR1## where A.sup..crclbar. is an anion or polyanion of an organic carboxylic, sulfonic or phosphonic acid, R.sup.1 is hydrogen, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 18 carbon atoms or aryl and R.sup.4 is alkyl of 1 to 18 carbon atoms or aryl.

Removal of the catalyst from polyphenylene ethers

A process for the preparation of high molecular weight polyphenylene ethers from alkyl-substituted monohydric phenols by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst complex of a copper salt and an organic amine, subsequent stopping of the reaction and removal of the metal component of the catalyst by addition of chelating and/or salt-forming agents, wherein the polymer solution is treated with a compound having the general structure: ##STR1## where R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 can be identical or different and each is OH, NH.sub.2, NHR.sup.5, where R.sup.5 is alkyl or cycloalkyl, or SH, and where R.sup.1 and R.sup.4 are identical or different, being hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, carbonyl, carboxyl, carboxyalkyl or nitrile, and can be linked to form a ring, advantageously in an amount of from 0.1 to 100 mmoles and advantageously in from 1 to 20% strength aqueous solutions.
