Fabrics coated with an organopolysiloxane composition containing (a) an organopolysiloxane having aliphatic unsaturation, (b) an organohydrogenpolysiloxane having SiH groups in which the silicon to hydrogen ratio is from 10:1 to 1:1, (c) a catalyst which is capable of promoting the addition of SiH groups to the aliphatically unsaturated groups, (d) a hydrophobic silica filler, (e) a flame retardant and optionally an adhesion promoting agent. The coated fabric can be used in manufacturing air bags for automobiles.

Organosilyl carbonates, such as bis(trimethylsilyl)carbonate, are prepared by reacting an organohalosilane with an alkali bicarbonate in the presence of an amine and/or a phosphine and an aprotic solvent, preferably a polar solvent which is inert to the reactants. The resultant mixture is separated from the ammonium halide and/or phosphonium halide and the organosilyl carbonate is recovered from the halide-free mixture.

Organopolysiloxanes having SiC-bonded oxyalkylene units and Si-bonded hydroxyl groups, in which an average of at least 15 mol percent of the siloxane units contain only one SiC-bonded monovalent organic radical and the silicon valences which are not satisfied by the SiC-bonded monovalent organic radical are satisfied by siloxane oxygen atoms or oxygen atoms of hydroxyl groups. Hydrophilic coatings are obtained by applying to a substrate a composition containing an aqueous soluble organopolysiloxane which is capable of being crosslinked by the addition of Si-bonded hydrogen atoms to SiC-bonded aliphatic multiple bonds, and having at least one oxyalkylene unit bonded to a silicon atom and an aqueous soluble catalyst which promotes the addition of Si-bonded hydrogen atoms to the SiC-bonded aliphatic multiple bonds and thereafter crosslinking the organopolysiloxane by the addition of the Si-bonded hydrogen atoms to the SiC-bonded aliphatic multiple bonds to form a hydrophilic coating on the substrate. The aqueous soluble organopolysiloxane may be obtained from a mixture consisting of equal parts of a mixed hydrolysate, prepared from 1.7 moles of dimethyldichlorosilane, 1 mole of [acetoxy-(hexaethyleneoxy)propyl]-methyldichlorosilane and 0.3 mole of vinylmethyldichlorosilane, and a mixed hydrolysate prepared from 1 mole of dimethyldichlorosilane, 1 mole of [acetoxy(hexaethyleneoxy)-propyl]-methyl-dichlorosilane and 1 mole of methyldichlorosilane.

Room temperature curable compositions, which can be stored under anhydrous conditions, but when exposed to atmospheric moisture at room temperature cure to an elastomer comprising a diorganopolysiloxane having terminal condensable groups, a silicon compound containing acetoxy, tert-butoxy and SiC-bonded alkyl groups and a condensation catalyst, if desired, in which at least a portion of the silicon compound containing acetoxy, tert-butoxy and SiC-bonded alkyl groups is obtained from the reaction of an alkyltriacetoxysilane and tert-butanol in aqueous acetic acid.

Organopolysiloxanes having substituted carbamoyloxy groups (.tbd.SiOCO--NH--) bonded to silicon via oxygen, which are prepared by reacting an organopolysiloxane containing Si-bonded hydroxyl groups with an organic isocyanate in the presence of an organic tin compound. The stability of the organopolysiloxanes containing carbamoyloxy groups may be improved if the organopolysiloxane having Si-bonded hydroxyl groups is reacted with an organic isocyanate in the presence of an organic tin compound which is supported on a solid carrier and then the reaction product is filtered under anhydrous conditions to remove the supported organic tin compound.
