A turbocharger system is disclosed, including a turbine and compressor and a rotary valve unit. The rotary valve unit comprises a fixed valve seat and a rotary valve member arranged coaxially with the valve seat. The valve member is disposed against the valve seat and is rotatable about the axis for selectively varying a degree of alignment between respective orifices in the valve seat and valve member. The valve unit includes a valve housing that defines a first flow passage and a second flow passage, and the valve member and valve seat are disposed in the second flow passage. A turbocharger system is also disclosed, including a turbine and compressor and the rotary valve unit. The rotary valve unit is coupled with the turbine such that exhaust gas that has passed through the turbine wheel is fed into the first flow passage of the rotary valve unit, and exhaust gas that has bypassed the turbine wheel is fed into the second flow passage of the rotary valve unit.

Rotary valve unit for turbocharger

A turbocharger includes a turbine housing defining an exhaust gas inlet, and an exhaust gas exit. The turbine housing is integrated with a housing for a 3-way valve defining a primary through-passage that supplies exhaust gas directly to a catalyst. The exhaust gas inlet is connected to a bypass passage of the valve that allows exhaust gases to flow to the turbine before going to the catalyst. The valve includes a rotary element whose position is controllable to regulate flow through each of the primary through-passage and the bypass passage of the valve. The rotary element is rotatable over a first range of movement and a further second range of movement, the first range including a position in which the bypass passage is substantially fully closed. Over the second range the bypass passage is fully open regardless of the degree of opening or closing of the primary through-passage.

A turbocharger and engine cylinder head assembly includes a center housing rotating assembly (CHRA) and an engine cylinder head defining a receptacle for receiving the CHRA, the engine cylinder head defining a compressor volute. A diffuser is defined for receiving and diffusing the compressed air from the compressor wheel and supplying the compressed air to the compressor volute. The assembly includes a cap formed separately from the engine cylinder head and removably secured to the engine cylinder head, the cap defining one wall of the diffuser. An opposite wall of the diffuser is defined either by the engine cylinder head or a portion of the center housing, depending on whether the CHRA slides into the receptacle compressor-wheel-first or turbine-wheel-first. The compressor volute can be located on a turbine side of the diffuser.

A turbocharger assembly includes a center housing rotating assembly, which comprises a center housing, bearings housed in the center housing, a shaft rotatably supported in the bearings, and compressor and turbine wheels affixed to opposite ends of the shaft; an engine cylinder head and a housing member formed together as a one-piece integral structure, wherein the housing member defines a compressor volute that receives compressed air from the compressor wheel, a turbine volute for receiving exhaust gas from the engine, a turbine nozzle for directing exhaust gas from the turbine volute into the turbine wheel, and a turbine contour; a compressor contour plug that defines an axial inlet for the compressor and a compressor contour; and a wastegate unit operable for allowing exhaust gas to bypass the turbine wheel when the wastegate unit is open and preventing exhaust gas from bypassing the turbine wheel when the wastegate unit is closed.

Turbocharger cartridge, bypass, and engine cylinder head assembly

A turbocharger cartridge and engine cylinder head assembly includes a turbocharger cartridge having a center housing defining a bore therethrough, bearings housed in the bore, a shaft rotatably supported in the bearings, a compressor wheel affixed to one end of the shaft, and a turbine wheel affixed to an opposite end of the shaft. The engine cylinder head defines a receptacle in which the turbocharger cartridge is disposed. The cartridge defines a cartridge oil circuit and the engine cylinder head defines an engine oil circuit. An oil circuit connector plug is removably installed in a socket in the head, the plug defining a connector passage that mates up with an oil supply conduit in the engine cylinder head and with an oil supply passage in the center housing such that oil is conducted from the oil supply conduit through the connector passage to the bore.
