Preheated bulk material capable of coking is quenched by flowing the quenching liquid through the loose bulk material, whereby the bulk material is substantially closed off relative to the atmosphere. The liquid is applied to the top of the bulk material in a quenching chamber which is closed at its top by a sealed cover and which has an open grating for a horizontal bottom. The steam formed by the quenching liquid and, if formed, any excess quenching liquid are drawn off from the quenching chamber through the open grating. The total quantity of quenching liquid to be supplied as a function of time is controlled by a valve through a control signal depending on the chemical and physical properties constituting bulk material characteristics prior to the heating of the coal. The control signal also takes into account the type of the intended heat treatment in the form of quenching characteristics. In a surprisingly simple embodiment the valve may be controlled by the operation of a cam disk which has a cam surface shaped in accordance with these characteristics.

Method for quenching coke

An improvement is provided for equipment for collecting, extracting and purifying gases arising on the coke side of a battery of coke oven chambers with vertical heating flues in which a triangular frame is provided for carrying the hood which overhangs the loading area of the quench truck and which is movable alongside the oven chambers. The triangular frame is supported at each corner by wheel assemblies. One wheel assembly is mounted for movement along the gas gallery track which also supports the coke batch conveying truck and the other two wheel assemblies are mounted on a track on top of the gas collection duct running alongside the coke oven chambers. A sealing flap is provided to automatically seal the coke batch guide to the hood when the guide is in contact with an oven chamber.

Equipment for collecting, extracting and purifying foul gases arising on

A locomotive is provided to move a quench car and a gas transition car parallel to a battery of coke ovens adjacent a coke guide car. A pivotable hood is provided on the guide car for covering part of the charging opening of the quench car. The quench car has generally parallel, pivotal flaps which can operate independently to open a portion of the quench car charge opening beneath the hood as coke is pushed from the guide and through the hood into the car. The flaps on either side of the hood can be held closed to seal the charge opening and prevent escape of the dirty gases out of the quench car. An extraction duct connects the quench car to the gas transition car cooperably connected with a gas collection duct which also runs parallel to the coke ovens and which has an opening running its length. The opening is sealed by a belt, a portion of which is lifted away from sealing engagement with the collection duct by the gas transition car to allow passage of gases into the collection duct and then to gas extraction and purifying equipment.

Equipment for extracting and purifying dirty gases arising on the coke

Equipment for receiving and transporting red-hot coke, pushed out of the oven chambers of a chamber coke-oven with vertical flue, and for extracting and purifying the dust-containing gases rising from the coke. The equipment includes duct means and associated suction means for initially extracting the dust-containing gases from an extractor hood and subsequently from the container collecting the hot coke.

Gas extracting and purifying equipment

A container for loose material, in particular for hot coal, during the operation of a coke oven battery including a novel deflecting means for directing particulate matter located in the gas emanating from the loose material back into the container to reduce the flow of particulate matter out of the container to minimize air pollution. The deflecting means is in the shape of an umbrella-shaped guide plate which is adjustable relative to the container to control an annular outlet opening for the gas. In the annular opening are located settling plates to further minimize the flow of particulate matter out of the container.

Equipment for exhausting gases from a collecting device including an outer collection duct having longitudinal openings covered by a flexible belt. The collecting device is shifted along said duct while lifting the belt off the collection duct. Located within the outer collection duct is a longitudinally extending arcuate member defining on its side opposite to said belt an inner collection channel for directing exhaust gases out through the collection channel while preventing contact of said exhaust gases with the belt to prevent deterioration thereof.

A gas-collecting arrangement movable from one coking chamber to the next and serving to remove exhaust gases emitted during pushing and/or quenching of coke and during filling of coking chambers with coal, includes a shielding device arranged within the collecting main at a distance from a flexible belt and extending at least across the intake cross-section of the collecting main to separate the gas stream in the main from the flexible belt.

The coking installation has a row of coke discharge openings, a coke guide car mounted for travel along the row, a coke quenching car mounted for travel along the row and adapted to receive coke pushed out from the coke discharge openings through the coke guide car, and a suction arrangement for generating suction. A hood structure is mounted for travel along the row of coke discharge openings. The hood is connectable to the suction arrangement and movable into a position extending over the whole breadth but only a fraction of the length of the quenching car. Wind shields are provided on opposite ends of the hood in the region of the lower end of the hood. The wind shields extend horizontally in opposite respective travel directions of the hood and each has a breadth corresponding to the breadth of the hood.

Apparatus for use with a coke oven having a carriageway for a quenching car along a side thereof, which apparatus comprises a hood for covering a quenching car on the carriageway, and a supporting structure which supports the hood solely from that side of the carriageway which is remote from the coke oven.

Coke oven hood apparatus

A coking oven has an upright wall formed with an opening which is normally closed by a door past which noxious gases escape at least at times. Outwardly adjacent the opening and the wall are formed one or more upright channels having open ends located below and above the level of the opening, respectively, and being so positioned that escaping noxious gases can enter into this channel or these channels. Arranged adjacent the upper open end or ends is a suction conduit provided with apertures through which the gases can be drawn from the channel or channels to be conveyed in the conduit.
