A power conversion system and method includes a DC-DC converter and an auxiliary circuit configured to ensure that a minimum input voltage is provided to the DC-DC converter during power interruption and for at least a predetermined hold-up time period. The auxiliary circuit includes an energy storage device, an auxiliary energy source for charging the energy storage device, and a clamping circuit to limit the energy stored by the energy storage device to a threshold voltage. A discharge time of the energy storage device from the threshold voltage to the minimum voltage thereby exceeds the predetermined hold-up time, but is only incrementally greater such that the size of the energy storage device is substantially reduced. The auxiliary energy source may typically be a current source, with the clamping circuit being control logic effective to disable the current source as a voltage across the storage device approaches the threshold.

Circuit and method for providing hold-up time in a DC-DC converter

A method and apparatus for sharing current among a plurality of power modules is provided. The method includes sensing of a characteristic of an output power signal of at least one of the plurality of power modules and providing a first signal having a pulse width corresponding to the sensed characteristic. The first signal is imparted onto a current share bus coupled to each of the plurality of power modules if the first signal has a pulse width greater than corresponding first signals of other power modules coupled to the current share bus, whereupon one of the first signals from the plurality of power modules having greatest pulse width is imparted onto the current share bus as a second signal. A phase difference between the first signal and the second signal is detected and a feedback signal is provided to the at least one power module in response to the detected phase difference. The feedback signal thereby controls the at least one power module to regulate the output power signal.

A switching amplifier including a plurality of switching stages, each having a drive transformer, the primary winding of which is separated from the secondary winding in a manner such that no conductive connection exists between them. The primary windings of each drive transformer is connected by means of controllable switching elements to a supply-voltage source in a push-pull circuit arrangement. The switching elements are controlled by means of a signal converter which converts an analog input signal into at least one pulse sequence which is applied to the control electrodes of the controllable switching elements by means of at least one control transformer having at least one primary winding coupled to the pulse sequence and plural secondary windings coupled to the control electrode of a respective switching element. The output terminals of the secondary winding of the drive transformer are connected to a full-wave rectifier. The push-pull circuit arrangement and the full-wave rectifier enable the switching stages to operate at a power output of virtually 100%.

A method of amplifying an analog low-frequency signal, and a switching amplifier implementing the method, wherein the maximum amplifiable voltage of the analog input signal is divided up into as many voltage bands as there are switching stages provided in the switching amplifier, and one switching stage is associated with each voltage band. Thereby the number of switching stages actuated and their switched-on period may be modulated in dependence upon the amplitude. In this way it is possible to reduce considerably the total number of switching processes during one period of the low-frequency input signal and the losses connected with each switching process.

A compact and inexpensive LF power amplifier is disclosed. A plurality of pulse trains which are phase shifted relative to each other are width-modulated by an input LF signal. The modulated pulse trains are individually amplified, preferably by means of a plurality of respective power transformers and switch elements. The switch elements include any suitable combination of electron tubes and semiconductor switches. The keying ratio of the amplifier is improved by associating the pulse trains in pairs, the two members of each pair being phase shifted 180.degree. relative to each other. The amplified pulse trains are superimposed to form a single combined amplified pulse train.
